2 What is PARCC? The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a group of states that brought teachers, administrators and experts together to develop tests to measure how well students understand and are able to apply the skills and knowledge required by the new standards. The PARCC tests are given annually in math and English language arts in grades 3-8 and are structured to be taken online for a more interactive test experience, but can also be taken with pencil and paper. The tests also are designed to provide educators with a deeper understanding of how students learn.

3 Que es PARCC? La Asociación para la Evaluación de la preparación para la universidad y carreras (PARCC siglas en inglés) se llevó a cabo cuando un grupo de estados reunieron a maestros, administradores y expertos para desarrollar pruebas que pudieran medir el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes basados en las habilidades de comprensión, que sean capaces de aplicar las habilidades y conocimientos requeridos por las nuevas normas. Las pruebas PARCC se dan anualmente en matemáticas y lectura, escritura y composición en los grados 3-8 y están estructurados para ser tomado en línea, pero también se pueden tomar con lápiz y papel. Las pruebas también se han diseñado para proporcionar a los educadores una comprensión más profunda de cómo los estudiantes aprenden.

4 Why PARCC PARCC is a measure of accountability for all public and charter schools, both traditional and charter in the District of Columbia. New assessment to provide a common way of measuring how students are learning regardless of their ethnicity and zip code. To set a new baseline and increase academic achievement over time to guarantee college and career readiness.

5 Por que PARCC? PARCC es una medida del rendimiento académico para todas las escuelas públicas tradicionales y chárter en el distrito de Columbia. Es una nueva evaluación que utilizando una misma medida, compara cómo los estudiantes están aprendiendo, independientemente de su origen étnico y código postal. Establece una base de datos para medir el crecimiento académico utilizando medidas más rigurosas que garanticen la preparación universitaria y profesional de los estudiantes.

6 What are DC s standards? The Common Core (CC) are DC s standards for Math and English language arts. The CC are more rigorous expectations for what students should know and be able to do to be college and career ready The CC ask students to demonstrate and apply their knowledge and skills in areas such as critical thinking skills, analytical writing, and problem solving. The CC are not a curriculum!

7 Qué son los Estándares de DC? Los estándares básicos son las normas adoptadas por el Distrito de matemáticas y lenguaje. Los estándares son expectativas más rigurosos para que los estudiantes puedan ser capaces de tener éxito en la universidad y estar listos para una carrera profesional. Los estándares piden a los estudiantes demostrar y aplicar sus conocimientos y habilidades que requieren una mente analítica, un pensamiento crítico, escritura analítica y resolver problemas. NO es un currículo.

8 How are the tests scores? Students received a numerical scale from 650 to 850 which fall into one of five performance levels: Level 5 = Exceeded expectations Level 4 = Meet expectations Level 3 = Approaching expectations Level 2 = Partially met expectations Level 1 = Did not meet expectations Level 4 or 5 are on track for college Below level 4 will need additional support

9 Como se califican? Los estudiantes reciben una calificación numérica que van del 650 al 850 lo cual los pone en los siguientes niveles: Nivel 5 Excede las expectativas Nivel 4 Cumple con las expectativas Nivel 3 Se esta acercando a las expectativas Nivel 2 Cumple parcialmente con las expectativas Nivel 1 No cumplió con las expectativas El nivel 4 y 5 significan que los estudiantes están a buen nivel que los esta preparando para la universidad Si tienen menos del nivel 4 necesitan apoyo adicional.

18 Montessori Vs. Testing Montessori is a pedagogical method and philosophy of education. PARCC is a summative assessment that requires students to demonstrate mastery of specific skills and subjects once per year. Montessori is formative and assesses as children perform their work and master skills at their own pace. Assessment time is not instructional time.

19 Montessori y Las Evaluaciones Montessori es un método de educación con una filosofía. PARCC en una forma de evaluación que requiere que los estudiantes demuestren sus habilidades especificas y en aéreas especificas una vez al año. Montessori evalúa a los estudiantes constantemente a como van desarrollando las habilidades y a su propio paso. Las Pruebas estandarizadas no cuentan como tiempo de instrucción.

20 Cont. PARCC s testing approach is vastly different than instructional approaches like Montessori, which is proven, but experiential. The testing environment is 180 degrees different than the Montessori learning environment, which means students cannot really show what they know. Best practices is differentiated instruction, but PARCC assessments are one size fits all.

21 Continuación Las evaluaciones de PARCC son muy diferentes a como funciona el ambiente Montessori, lo cual se ha demostrado que da resultados y es experimental. El ambiente requerido para PARCC es muy diferente al ambiente de aprendizaje Montessori, por lo tanto los estudiante no siempre pueden demostrar todo lo que saben. Las mejores practicas en educación son diferenciar y darle a cada niño lo que necesita, y estas pruebas son todos aprendiendo lo mismo al mismo tiempo.
