THE MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY We spend the month of November praying for our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection (Eucharistic Prayer II): the Holy Souls in Purgatory who await their union with Christ. Please pray that God may give the gift of eternal joy in Heaven to those who did great things for us while they lived and continue to help us by their prayers. The greatest prayer, the Holy Mass, celebrates the Resurrection. We celebrated a special Mass for all those who had died during the past year and printed their names in the bulletin last week to help you remember to pray for them. Our parish prays for the deceased: Mondays and Fridays we have Adoration in the church/chapel, Wednesdays in November we have noon Mass for those remembered in the All Souls envelopes, and the names recorded in Book of the Names of the Dead, in front of the altar of Mary, are remembered at Masses this month. This month we also pray about our end, what happens after death. At the end of our life we will be judged by God. We either go to heaven, where we will see God and live forever in His loving presence, or Hell, where we will suffer eternal punishment and separation from the Lord, or Purgatory. God is Merciful: Jesus came not to condemn the world but to save it. Purgatory is God s Mercy to the deceased (the Holy Souls ): they experience the purgation, from which the word Purgatory comes, of their sins. The saints go directly to Heaven. The Holy Souls pray for us but cannot pray for themselves, and we believe our prayers for them hasten their journey to Heaven. Please read the following excerpt from the homily that Pope Benedict gave during this Year of Faith on how believers respond to the mystery of death: How do we as Christians respond to the question of death? We respond with faith in God, with a look of solid hope that is based on the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Then death opens to life, to eternal life, which is not an infinite duplication of the present time, but something entirely new. Our faith teaches us that true immortality to which we aspire is not an idea, a concept, but a relationship of full communion with the living God: it is being in His hands, in His love, and becoming in Him one with all the brothers and sisters that He created and redeemed, with the whole of creation. Our hope then rests on the love of God that shines from the Cross of Christ, and that resonates in the heart the words of Jesus to the good thief, "Today you will be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). This is life at its fullness: life in God, a life which we can now only glimpse at like blue sky through the fog. Our prayer is nourished by firm hope that "does not disappoint" (Rom 5:5), as guaranteed by Christ who wanted to live the experience of death in the flesh to triumph over it with the miraculous event of the Resurrection. BENEDICT XVI: FROM THE LETTER DOOR OF FAITH FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH (Part 6) Caritas Christi urget nos (2 Cor 5:14): it is the love of Christ that fills our hearts and impels us to evangelize. Today as in the past, he sends us through the highways of the world to proclaim his Gospel to all the peoples of the earth (cf. Mt 28:19). Through his love, Jesus Christ attracts to himself the people of every generation: in every age he convokes the Church, entrusting her with the proclamation of the Gospel by a mandate that is ever new. Today too, there is a need for stronger ecclesial commitment to new evangelization in order to rediscover the joy of believing and the enthusiasm for communicating the faith. In rediscovering his love day by day, the missionary commitment of believers attains force and vigour that can never fade away. Faith grows when it is lived as an experience of love received and when it is communicated as an experience of grace and joy. It makes us fruitful, because it expands our hearts in hope and enables us to bear life-giving witness: indeed, it opens the hearts and minds of those who listen to respond to the Lord s invitation to adhere to his word and become his disciples. Believers, so Saint Augustine tells us, strengthen themselves by believing. The saintly Bishop of Hippo had good reason to express himself in this way. As we know, his life was a continual search for the beauty of the faith until such time as his heart would find rest in God. His extensive writings, in which he explains the importance of believing and the truth of the faith, continue even now to form a heritage of incomparable riches, and they still help many people in search of God to find the right path towards the door of faith. Only through believing, then, does faith grow and become stronger; there is no other possibility for possessing certitude with regard to one s life apart from self-abandonment, in a continuous crescendo, into the hands of a love that seems to grow constantly because it has its origin in God. There is still time to contribute. If we do not make our goal, the parish will have to pay the difference from what we collect for the ordinary running of the parish. This would mean less money for the upkeep of our building, less money for parish services, less money to minister you, the people of God. Please prayerfully consider what you, as an individual or family can pledge to support the works of the Diocese of Gary and the universal Church. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way: shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor! A PRAYER FOR VETERANS DAY May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! St. Casimir School students and staff kicked off the celebration of the Year of Faith 2012 on October 11 th with a door decorating contest. Classroom and office doors throughout the building were adorned with inspirational scriptures and images reminding all what it means to live in the Catholic faith. Friendly competition filled the air and creativity flowed through the halls of the school. Eventually two winners were chosen, one from the category of Staff Doors: classroom doors which were hand-crafted Cafeteria by students and their teachers and the other from a group of staff doors. Second grade took the honor of winning among the students, with a door decorated with Jesus open arms and 32 miniature pictures representing each of the students in that class. Let the Little Children Come Unto Me was their theme. The cafeteria took first place among the staff with a representation of a recipe for the love of God and one another. Classroom Door: 2nd Grade The winners will be treated to a pizza party and door decorations will remain in place as the Year of Faith continues through November 24, 2013. Thirty - Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Widow s Mite Paragraph 2011 - III. Merit The charity of Christ is the source in us of all our merits before God. Grace, by uniting us to Christ in active love, ensures the supernatural quality of our acts and consequently their merit before God and before men. The saints have always had a lively awareness that their merits were pure grace. After earth s exile, I hope to go and enjoy you in the fatherland, but I do not want to lay up merits for heaven. I want to work for your love alone... In the evening of this life, I shall appear before you with empty hands, for I do not ask you, Lord, to count my works. All our justice is blemished in your eyes. I wish, then, to be clothed in your own justice and to receive from your love the eternal possession of yourself. Todas nuestras justicias tienen manchas a tus ojos.
