Glass, aluminum & plastic beverage containers labeled CRV (California Refund Value) can be redeemed at designated centers for 5 per container under 24 oz, and 10 per container 24 oz and above. Non-CRV glass, metal and plastic beverage containers are accepted for recycling at most drop-off recycling locations. Plastic Bags Clean plastic bags can be recycled at most grocery stores, retailers and drug stores. (You can also include film such as produce bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper liners, ziplock bags, bubble wrap, etc. Visit www. naparecycling.com for a complete list.) Every second, Californians discard 600 plastic bags! Plastic bags litter the environment, use up valuable resources and fill up landfills. Please strongly consider using reusable cloth bags (the best option) or recyclable paper bags when you shop. RECYCLE AT SPECIAL EVENTS Special events provide a great opportunity to recycle ~ resources are available to help you. The City & County of Napa are committed to increasing recycling at Napa events and helping you make it work. When you call your service provider before the event, they will help you select the right recycling and trash containers for your needs and provide guidelines for successful event recycling. State and County policies require recycling at large events. Plus recycling will save you money because there is no charge for recycling at large events (south county and north county free services vary) while there is always a charge for trash collection. CALL NRWS/NCRWS at 255-5200 for more information or check the Guide to Recycling at Special Events at 6

Fight global warming Recycle & Compost! Recycling and composting are easy and efficient methods to save energy and reduce the production of greenhouse gases Just look at the stats for Napa alone In 2007, nearly 100,000 tons of materials were recycled or composted at the Napa Recycling & Composting Facility. By keeping these valuable resources out of the landfill, we decreased carbon dioxide emissions by 97,366 metric tons and used 562,393 million fewer BTUs of energy. To put it in perspective, this is enough energy to power all the houses in Napa for one month! Additionally, these savings are the equivalent of taking 21,075 passenger cars off the road and conserving almost 4½ million gallons of gasoline, helping to fight climate change and reduce our dependency on foreign oil.* Here are some easy ways to help: Recycle & Reuse at home & work Start a backyard compost pile Use canvas grocery bags Purchase products made of recycled materials *Information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s Waste Reduction Model (WARM), www.epa.gov/climatechange 11

RETHINK & REDUCE TOXIC WASTE Can the product be used by someone else? If you have an unwanted product that someone else could use - don t let it sit on the shelf! Take it to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility where they will determine if it can be put in the Reuse Locker. Unwanted household hazardous waste is very expensive for the County to dispose. A better option for both your budget and the environment is to prevent the waste from the start. 1) Buy the right product for the job. There is no magic bullet! What do you want the product to do? 2) Buy the least toxic alternative. Many manufacturers are responding to consumer demands for alternatives. 3) Buy only the amount you need or can use up. Will you be able to use up the jumbo or bargain size product before it expires? 4) Store the product properly so it doesn t become unusable. Keep in a covered, dry, safe place. To Learn More: There are many resources on the internet that provide information about potential health risks of commonly used products and help identify less toxic alternatives. Washington Toxics Coalition (www.watoxics.org) is just one example. OUR WATER OUR WORLD Is a program that provides information about less-toxic pest management. Choose less toxic products for your home and garden at Napa County stores. Look for the "Our Water, Our World" symbol before you buy. Below are Napa County participating stores.
