Parent Commitment Form Dual Immersion Placement Student Name Grade Level I am requesting that my child be enrolled in the Spanish Dual Immersion Program at Cale Elementary School. I understand that the enrollment of my child is conditional on my understanding of and commitment to the following, along with space availability: 1. I commit to the program goals of academic success, bilingualism and biliteracy, cross-cultural thoughtfulness, and cooperative problem-solving. I will work with my child s teacher to accomplish these goals. 2. I understand that 50% of all instruction will occur in Spanish and this may occur across core content areas such as math, science, and social studies as well as in specials such as art and music. All students will receive language arts instruction in both English and Spanish. 3. I understand attendance and punctuality are of key importance. I commit to having my child attend school regularly and on time, except for illness and family emergencies. 4. I will give positive reinforcement to my child as they acquire a second language, understanding that it is normal for children to speak across languages, confuse words in different languages, and experience some frustration in the language-learning process. 5. I understand that my child s classroom includes students of all academic levels. If my child is not achieving at my expected level, I will explore with teachers the many possible causes and not assume that Spanish is inhibiting academic performance. 6. If my child experiences learning difficulties, does not respond to appropriate interventions, and is identified (through formal evaluations) to have a learning disability, I understand reassignment to a traditional classroom may or may not be recommended by the school team. 7. I understand that selection is based on the number of available seats as well as achieving a balance of native English and Spanish speakers and a balance of girls and boys. For placement in 1 st or 5 th grade immersion classrooms placement will also depend on teacher evaluations of Spanish language proficiency. In the event there are more applicants than the number of seats available in immersion classrooms, qualified applicants will be chosen at random through a lottery system. Grado Solicito, mi hijo participe dentro del programa de Inmersión Dual al Español, que es impartido en la escuela Cale Elementary. Doy por entendido, que la participación de mi representado, esta condicionada al entendimiento y compromiso de los principios que se describen a continuación, amen de la disponibilidad de cupo de la institución: 1. Me comprometo, a seguir los parámetros establecidos para lograr el éxito académico, las metas bilingües, multiculturales y la resolución de problemas en equipo. Trabajaré, junto a los maestros de mi representado, para cumplir con las mismas. 2. Entiendo, que el 50% de la instrucción será impartida en español y abarcará todas las materias incluyendo matemáticas, ciencias, estudios sociales, así como también clases especiales como música y arte. Todos los estudiantes recibirán clases de lenguaje en ambos idiomas (ingles y español). 3. Entiendo, que la asistencia y la puntualidad en el colegio son de suma importancia. Me comprometo a que mi hijo asistirá a clases de forma regular y a tiempo, con la excepción de enfermedades y emergencias familiares. 4. Procuraré, a mi representado, de un refuerzo positivo en la adquisición de una segunda lengua mi representado, entiendo que es normal que los niños que reciben instrucción en dos idiomas, tienden a estar, por momentos, confundidos con el correcto uso del lenguaje así como también la experimentación de cierto grado de frustración en el proceso 5. Entiendo que, el salón de clases de mi representado, incluirá estudiantes de todos los niveles académicos. Si mi hijo, no esta aprendiendo de la forma que aspiro explorare, junto a sus maestros, las posibles causas sin asumir a priori que la adquisición del español inhiba su rendimiento escolar. 6. Si mi hijo experimentara dificultades en el aprendizaje, no respondiera a intervenciones académicas apropiadas y es identificado (a través de una evaluación formal) con una inhabilidad para el aprendizaje, entendería contemplar la posibilidad de reasignar o no, por recomendación del equipo de trabajo del colegio, a mi representado a un salón de enseñanza tradicional. 7. Queda entendido, de mi parte, que la selección de estudiantes a participar depende del numero de vacantes disponibles para el grado a cursar por el mismo, así como también, del equilibrio entre géneros y el numero de niños que tengan como lengua madre el ingles y/o el español. Para los cupos en los cursos de 1 er o 5 to grado, dentro de salones de inmersión, dependen de una evaluación de eficiencia en el idioma español, realizada por nuestros maestros. En el caso, de existir mas aspirantes al programa de inmersión, que el numero de cupos al tenemos capacidad, esto los cualifica para ser elegidos al azar dentro de un sistema de lotería.
