1 PASTOR'S NOTES Stay to the basics On my time off, I needed to rent a car. I did this on-line via one of the travel sites to get a good price. As I always do, I booked an economy class car (the very cheapest). Since I was alone with luggage to cover only two nights (a back pack and a carry on duffle bag) I didn t need a huge car. When I finally arrived at my destination, took the shuttle to the car rental area, and made my way to the Alamo counter, I was not surprised to find the counter closed. It was 12:20am. There was a sign that told customers to proceed to the National counter where Alamo customers would be helped. When I arrived at the National counter it was closed, too. There was a sign that said to proceed out the door to the kiosk at the National area where customers would be helped. I did as the sign told me and found a gentleman who was helping other customers. I waited my turn (about 10 minutes; I was amazed at how many folks are renting cars from 12:30 to 1:00am in the morning) and then began the process. I was tired and was looking to get my car and find the hotel room I had booked online as well. However, the National employee was determined to sell me first, a larger car (an upgrade); second, insurance; third a GPS system; and finally, he tried to talk me into paying in advance for the car to be fueled by National. Of course, being a person who is trying to make my dollar stretch, I told him I did not need power windows or a bigger car; my car insurance covered me; I had a smart phone that had GPS; and I would fill up the car prior to returning. When I made it to my hotel room at 1:00am I considered it a miracle! The next day as I was driving my little KIA rental car I was thinking about how our society seems to be built around convincing us that we need more and more. Airlines want you to get an upgrade and restaurants always want you to have dessert. Someone is always asking us to buy more, as if what we had wasn t good enough. I was thinking about this reality in light of prayer. With prayer, like with renting a car, staying to the basics is usually the best policy. What are the basics in prayer? First and foremost, making a regular time each day. Second, and equally important, silence or quiet as a disposition of prayer. Anything more you need to do? NO!! These are the basics. People will try to sell you on this novena, that prayer, or this place. The fact is, the most important thing about praying is making the time and being quiet so that God can work in us. OK, there is one more thing. I will share it with a quick story. I was doing my walk this morning and I passed a young man getting into his car. From the screen door of the house that he had just closed, I heard a woman s voice shout, I love you honey. Have a great day. A wife was telling her husband she loved him! The third basic of prayer is the intention to love and be loved. The formula is simple, we make time regularly to be quiet and open ourselves to the love of God. Do this, and you will experience communion with God. You don t need to add a lot to the basics. Stay to the basics and trust God to do the rest!! Rev. Just Faith: A journey into the Heart of the Gospel and Learning to Live Our Faith Do you find that your life is rapidly moving from one year to the next and you have little time to reflect on what it means to live the Gospel as Jesus asks us to do? Love your neighbor as yourself is the great commandment. But, in my busy life, who really is my neighbor? For 30 weeks, journey with other seekers using books, videos, conversations, and encounters with those who live at the margins of society. The Just Faith Program begins the week of September 18. An informational meeting will be held Friday evening, August 26 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church. My eyes were opened and the blinders removed on many social issues. For a more balanced world view, my radio dial has been switched from talk shows to public broadcasting programs. After viewing so many social injustices, I see the value of human dignity & feel more motivated to help the marginalized. Catholic Social doctrine truly does look at both sides of issues and has enlightened my feeble mind through Just Faith sessions! Carol Kope Berand. For more information please call (310) RESOURCE INFORMATION SPOTLIGHT ON CATHOLIC CHARITIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Come share your time, talent and treasures as a volunteer at the food pantry. The Food Resource Center provides emergency food for those in need. Volunteers also help complete food stamp applications and make referrals to local service agencies. Our goal is to help people towards self sufficiency by providing temporary help with food and information on community resources. During the fiscal year the Center assisted over 40,000 people. Volunteers are needed for client intake, food distribution assistants and delivery drivers. Volunteers commit to one 4 hour shift per week. Training is provided. 6 Mensaje del Párroco Permanezcan en lo Básico En mi tiempo libre tengo la necesidad de rentar un carro. Lo hago a través de Internet cuando viajo para tener un buen precio. Y como siempre hago, aparto un carro económico (el más barato). Y como ando solo con un equipaje que cubra solo dos noches (mi mochila y una maleta chica) no necesito un carro grande. Cuando llego a mi destino, tomo el transporte propio de la compañía de renta, y voy hacia el mostrador de Álamo, y no fue sorpresa encontrarlo cerrado, eran las 12:20am. Había un letrero que decía que los clientes de Álamo fueran al mostrador de National. Cuando llegué al mostrador de National, también estaba cerrado. Tenían un letrero que decía: vaya hacia afuera al kiosco de National donde se atenderá a los clientes. Pasen al mostrador de National donde se les ayudará. Hice lo que los letreros decían y encontré un caballero que ayudaba a otros clientes. Esperé mi turno (cerca de 10 minutos, y estaba sorprendido cuántos clientes rentaban carros entre las 12:30 y 1:00am) y entonces, comencé el proceso. Estaba cansado y buscaba mi carro y encontrar el hotel que había reservado en Internet. Sin embargo, el empleado de National estaba determinado a rentarme un carro grande; segundo, la aseguranza; tercero, el sistema GPS; y finalmente, empezó a decirme que pagara por adelantado la gasolina a través de National. Por supuesto, como soy una persona que aprovecha cada dólar, le dije que no necesitaba de ventanas eléctricas, o un carro grande, mi aseguranza general me cubre, tengo un celular que incluye GPS y llenaría el carro de gasolina antes de entregarlo. Cuando llegue al cuarto de mi hotel, alrededor de la 1am, lo consideré un milagro. El siguiente día yo estaba manejando un pequeño carro KIA y estaba pensando acerca de cómo nuestra sociedad nos ha convencido de que necesitamos más y más. Las aerolíneas que tomamos y queremos mejorar los lugares, los restaurantes que desean que tengamos postre, alguien siempre nos pregunta comprar algo más y que lo que tenemos no es suficiente. Estuve pensando sobre esta realidad a la luz de la oración. Con oración, el rentar un carro, permanecer en lo básico generalmente es la mejor regla. Y qué es lo básico en la oración? Primero y más que nada, hacer cada día un tiempo regular para ella. Segundo, e igual de importante, el silencio y la disposición de hacer oración. Algo más necesitamos? NO!! Eso es lo básico. La gente tratará de vendernos algo más como esta novena, esta oración o este lugar. El hecho que es más importante es hacer tiempo para la oración y permanecer en la quietud para que Dios pueda trabajar en nosotros. OK, hay una cosa más. Lo compartiré con una pequeña historia. Estaba realizando mi caminata esta mañana y pasé a un joven que caminaba hacia su carro. Desde el mosquetero de su casa que había dejado, escuché la voz de una mujer que dijo: Cariño, te amo y que tengas un maravilloso día. Una esposa diciendo a su esposo que lo amaba! El tercer elemento básico de la oración es la intención de amar y ser amado. La formula es simple, hagamos tiempo regularmente para estar en paz y abiertos al amor de Dios. Hagan esto y van a experimentar la comunión con Dios. Ustedes no necesitan agregar mucho a lo básico. Permanezcan en lo básico y confíen que Dios hará lo demás! Rev.
