2 October 12, 2012 Dear McKinley Families, Today, our Friends for Change club held its first Friday Game Day! Twenty 2 nd and 3 rd grade students participated and played board games during their lunch recess. If you have a 2 nd or 3 rd grader, please encourage them to participate. We will hold these game days every Friday. Today, Assistant Principal Teplin delivered a fabulous presentation on the new Reading Common Core Standards at the ELAC meeting. Dr. Teplin s expertise in reading instruction is an asset to our entire school community. Please join us for our Family Reading Night this coming Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Ms. Olague connected with special guest readers and they will share spooky stories. Our Caring Link Chains are growing in each of our classrooms! Please encourage your children to remember to show others they care by smiling, saying hello and expressing gratitude. Finally, our District office staff submitted two grant proposals to support the collaborative work of our teachers at McKinley and other SMMUSD schools. Both proposals were funded! Thank you to Educational Services staff Peggy Harris, Maureen Bradford and Rosa Serratore for always seeking out opportunities for our schools and of course, a big thank you to the RGK Foundation and the Cotsen Family Foundation for funding this essential work! 3 Octubre 12, 2012 Estimadas Familias McKinley, El día de hoy, nuestros amigos del club Amigos para el Cambio llevo a cabo su primer Viernes Día de Juego! Veinte estudiantes de 2do y 3er grado participaron y jugaron juegos de mesa durante su recreo de almuerzo. Si usted tiene un estudiante en 2do o 3er grado, favor de animarlos a participar. Nosotros vamos a llevar a cabo todos los viernes estos días de juego. El día de hoy, la Directora Asistente Teplin dio una fabulosa presentación sobre los nuevos Estándares de las Normas Básicas de Lectura en la reunión de ELAC. La habilidad de la Dra. Teplin en la instrucción de lectura es un recurso para toda nuestra comunidad de la escuela. Favor de acompañarnos en nuestra Noche de Lectura para la Familia este próximo miércoles a las 6:00p.m. Ms. Olague se conecto con especiales invitados lectores y ellos van a compartir historias misteriosas. Nuestras Cadena de Eslabones para Cuidado están creciendo en cada uno de nuestros salones! Favor de animar a nuestros niños a recordar de mostrarles a los demás que a ellos les importa con una sonrisa, hola y expresando gratitud. Finalmente, nuestro personal del Distrito presento dos propuestas de beca para apoyar el trabajo colaborativo de nuestros maestros en McKinley y otras escuelas SMMUSD. 7 Reflections This year s theme is "The Magic of a Moment." Announcing after school art workshops at McKinley: October 29th & 30th November 1st & 2nd 3-4pm in the cafeteria courtyard (art supplies provided) It s Reflections time again! Reflections is a PTA-sponsored arts event that brings students the opportunity for recognition in several areas in the arts on a national level. The divisions included are Visual Arts, Photography, Film, Dance Choreography, Literature, and Music Composition. Children can create work at home or join any workshop to create art inspired by this year s theme. The Reflections Program provides an excellent opportunity for students of all ages to: * Unleash their creative talents and be inspired * Experience the joy and fun of making art * Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme * Receive positive recognition for their original works of art Please encourage your child to submit their work for this fun program! 8 REFLEXIONES El tema de este año es La Magia de un Momento. Anunciando talleres de arte después de clases en McKinley: Octubre 29 y 30 Noviembre 1 y 2 En el patio al lado de la cafetería de 3 a 4p.m. (Se proveerán artículos de arte) Es tiempo de Reflexiones de nuevo! Reflexiones es un evento de artes patrocinado por PTA el cual trae la oportunidad a los estudiantes un reconocimiento en varias áreas del arte a nivel nacional. Las divisiones incluidas son: Artes Visuales, Fotografía, Film, Coreografía de Baile, Literatura, y Composición de Música. Los niños pueden crear trabajo en casa o unirse a cualquier taller para crear arte inspirado por el tema de este año. El Programa de reflexión provee una excelente oportunidad para los estudiantes de todas las edades para: Liberar su talento creativo y ser inspirado Experimentar el gozo y diversión de hacer arte Explorando las destrezas del pensamiento crítico para crear arte inspirado por el tema anual Recibir reconocimiento positivo por su arte de trabajo original Favor de animar a su hijo a entregar su trabajo para este programa divertido!
