2 My dear parishioners, One of the great joys for a pastor is to see vocations be fostered in one s parish. For six years, I was given the responsibility of helping a young seminarian strengthen his vocation to the priesthood. My last Mass in Presentation was this man s first Mass. It is a blessing for a parish to host the First Mass of a newly-ordained priest. I had the privilege of supervising five seminarians during my time as pastor and all were ordained priests. As I was leaving Presentation we finally had one man from the parish be accepted into the major seminary. We also had a group of women and young ladies who were actively discerning the call to religious life. A group of young ladies have been making the rounds of different convents to pray on discernment weekends. Last year, my former office manager left the parish to join the Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburga in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It will be my joy to go to her monastery on Tuesday, August 19 th for vespers when she will be officially received into the novitiate and receive her veil. It was sad to see her leave employment with me, but far more beautiful to see her realize the life that God had intended for her. I have visited her a few times over the course of the last year and I was grateful to God to see the joy she is living as a nun. Over the fifteen years of being a priest, I consistently encourage young people and those not so young, to be open to the voice of God, especially in regards to vocations. I have had my bad moments over the years. But I have never once regretted being a priest. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else. I love the priesthood and I enjoy helping others discern if God wants them in this life. Please pray for vocations and pray for your priests, past and current, that we may be holy and faithful. God bless, Fr. O Connor Calling Young People! On Saturday, September 6, Fr. O Connor and Fr. Evans will be leading a group of young people to Catholic Underground located at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 230 East 90 th Street, between 2 nd & 3 rd Avenues in Manhattan. We will be leaving immediately after the 5 pm Mass. It begins at 7:30 pm (we have to get there early to get seats) with a holy hour led by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The underground part takes place after the holy hour where different Catholic artists perform. It usually gets young people from the tri-state area each month. There are priests available for confession throughout the night. It is an awesome opportunity to hear great music and set your heart on fire for the Lord. If you are interested, call the rectory or speak to either Fr. O Connor or Fr. Evans after Masses. Young people under 18 will need permission slips.

3 Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you to all who have contributed to the Annual Catholic Appeal. So far 208 families have pledged at total of $42,190 towards our goal of $49,488. We still need $7,298 to reach our goal. Please use the appeal forms found in the back of the church. Please help the good works of the diocese. If your child is entering the 1st grade or higher in public school now is the time to register him/her for Religious Education classes. The order form is available in the Rectory Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians Church Blood Drive Donating blood saves lives! Please donate blood at our next blood drive scheduled on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from the hours of 8:30am to 2:30pm, in the parish room. To be eligible to donate, you must be between the ages of (16 year olds need parental consent, and donors ages 76 and above need a signed doctor s letter), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. The blood you donate can save up to three lives because each donation is broken down into parts and given to different people. Call Joe Ferrara at (516) to sign up to donate blood. For more information on donating blood, visit the New York Blood Center online at Prayer Group Meeting & Healing Mass The New Life Prayer Group of Queen of Angels meets every Tuesday at 8 PM in the Parish Center (44 th St. & Skillman Ave.). The Prayer Group also sponsors a monthly Healing Mass on the Third Tuesday of every month at 8 PM in the Church. This month s Healing Mass will be held on August 19. Divine Mercy Devotion--Queen of Angels Parish invites you for prayers for Divine Mercy on the last Sunday of every month (August 31) at 1 PM in Church. This bilingual (English/Spanish) prayer service lasts approximately one-half hour and includes The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and more. Prayer material will be provided. 4 Mis Queridos Feligreses: Unos de los grandes gozos como párroco es ver vocaciones fomentar en la parroquia de uno. Por seis años, me dieron la responsabilidad de ayudar a un seminarista joven a fortalecer su vocación al sacerdocio. Mi última Misa en la iglesia Presentación fue la primera Misa de este hombre. Tuve el privilegio de supervisar cinco seminaristas durante mi tiempo como párroco y todos fueron ordenados sacerdotes. Mientras salía de Presentación finalmente tuvimos a un hombre de la parroquia ser aceptado en el seminario mayor. También tuvimos un grupo de mujeres y muchachas jóvenes que activamente van a discernir la llamada a la vida religiosa. Un grupo de muchachas jóvenes han visitado diferentes conventos para orar en fin de semanas para discernir. El año pasado la encargada de la oficina anterior se fue de la parroquia para entrar con las Hermanas Benedictas de Santa Walburga en Elizabeth, New Jersey. Sera una alegría ir a verla en el monasterio el martes, 19 de agosto para la víspera cuando ella oficialmente se recibirá dentro el novicio y recibirá su velo. Fue tan triste verla partir del empleo, pero mucho más hermoso verla realizar la vida que Dios tenía previsto para ella. La he visitado unas cuantas veces en el transcurso del año pasado y estoy agradecido con Dios ver la alegría que ella vive como monja. Sobre los quince años como sacerdote, consistentemente les animo a los jóvenes y no tan jóvenes, que sean abiertos a la voz de Dios, especialmente en relación a vocaciones. He tenido mis malos momentos del año, pero jamás me arrepiento de ser un sacerdote. No puedo imaginarme haciendo alguna otra cosa. Amo el sacerdocio y disfruto ayudar a otros discernir si Dios lo quiere en esta vida. Por favor oren por las vocaciones y oren por sus sacerdotes, pasado y actual, para que seamos santos y fieles. El sábado, 6 de septiembre, el Padre O Connor y el Padre Evans guiaran un grupo de jóvenes al Subterráneo Católico (Catholic Underground) localizado en Nuestra Señora de Buen Consejo, 230 East 90 Street, entre la 2da y 3ra Avenida en Manhattan. Partiremos inmediatamente después de la misa de las 5pm. Comienza a las 7:30pm (tienen que llegar temprano para apartar un asiento) con hora santa guiado por los Friales Franciscanos de la Renovación. La parte subterráneo tomara lugar después, donde los diferentes artistas católicos presentaran. Usualmente llegan de jóvenes del área tri-estatal cada mes. Habrá sacerdotes disponibles para confesiones durante la noche. Es una oportunidad maravillosa escuchar buena música y poner tu corazón en llamas por el Señor. Si estas interesado, llama a la rectoría o habla con el Padre O Connor o el Padre Evans después de las misas. Jóvenes menores de 18 años necesitan firmar un formulario de permiso.
