As curator of the festival it has always been my mission to present to you a meticulously selected group of films, be they shorts, animation, narrative or documentary, the films shown this year will reach beyond what it is we are used to viewing. That is what makes our Latino International Film Festival different than anything else in the USA, as we strive to make a real difference in our communities and entertainment industry. As always, the key for us is diversity, creativity, innovation and ultimately entertainment. Be rest assured that this year s selection of films will make you laugh, cry and touch your soul. This year LALIFF is proud to present an unprecedented amount of female directors in many different categories. A total of 15 films directed by women from all over the Spanish-speaking world. This is more than ever before, in the 14 years of our festival, which sets a new benchmark for LALIFF and our community of filmmakers. This year we are featuring new provocative films from Nicaragua, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic as well as first time directors from all over Ibero-America, and beyond. We have selected an incredible line-up of documentary films that will introduce us to ordinary people capable of extraordinary things, including a healer who works in the mountains of Chiapas as well as a truly amazing documentary from the most infamous prison in Brazil, Carandiru. We ve also chosen a variety of pictures sure to be commercial successes as well as wonderful artistically expressive films that will remind you why it is we go to the cinema and make you glad to be a moviegoer. In short, films not to be missed. As you may already know The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science recognizes LALIFF as a qualifying festival for Oscar consideration in the short film category. This year s short films hail from all over the world as one of the most competitive and exciting programs, only selecting half of the many, many shorts submitted. LALIFF takes great pleasure in being the only Latino International Festival on the globe to have its collection of films archived at the Academy Film Archive. This year Dios los Cría, the Puerto Rican classic film (1979) by Jacobo Morales, has been chosen for presentation and is part of our pledge to preserving our cinematic history for the world and our communities. This fully restored print was created by the Academy Film Archive, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ; Archivo de Imágenes en Movimiento del Archivo General de Puerto Rico; Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival; and the Film and Electronic Arts Department of California State University, Long Beach. We are very proud to bring Dios los Cría to the silver screen once again, in its restored and sound re-mastered cinematic glory. 8 youth program LA LIFF LALIFF short youth program YOUTH PROGRAM * JUAN CON MIEDO (FEARFUL JOHN) The Youth Program is a literacy based program with the primary goal to engage students in reading, and writing in all three levels of education - Elementary School, Middle School and High School. The majority of the students are from the Greater Los Angeles area with many from schools with minimal funding for innovative teaching methodologies to deal with at risk youth with learning deficits and support for language acquisition. The long term objective of our program is to improve high school graduation rates, and to inspire students to consider higher educational programs. We expect to build self-esteem and to further engage students in the learning process and to improve retention in the middle school years. The Youth Program both inspires the students who attend the screenings and their teachers. Screenings afford the students an opportunity to interact with filmmakers, writers, actors, and celebrities. Most importantly, students learn first-hand about the hard work, persistence, and educational requirements to achieve their dreams. For the teacher, the Youth Program offers relevant and contemporary issues via film to use as a vehicle to drive engaging and lively classroom discussions. We also offer a Teacher Development Workshop titled, Using the Media Tools at Your Disposal. As a result of our workshops held in 2009, two participating schools created cinema projects for their students. Interns will gain exposure to all aspects of video production, from pre-production and shooting to non-linear editing on Apple's Imovie and Final Cut Pro. Interns will have the opportunity to develop their skills, particularly in postproduction. Interns will also have a unique opportunity to be involved in the production of a commercial and create shorts. Those interns exemplify the required capabilities will be invited to be part of the production team that will document Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Social Media Marketing The Social Media Marketing interns invite interested individuals to join social network online ( by informing them about the various incentives available. The incentives include: up dates on Latino film news; job and internship opportunities such as casting calls, technical positions available; access to grants and funding for film projects; opportunities for networking with others interested and involved in the film industry; and information on upcoming events, workshops and lectures. 12 LALIFF academy film archive SPECIAL ACADEMY PRESERVATION PROGRAM SCREENING ACADEMY FILM ARCHIVE, ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES The Academy Film Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences acquires and preserves materials that have contributed to the development of the art and science of the motion picture. In addition to prints of Academy Award-nominated and winning films, the archive holds the personal collections of past and current Academy members, as well as a diverse collection of avant-garde, documentary, and animated films. Ongoing film festival collections include the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. The LALIFF collection is freely available for consultation on the Archive s premises to all students, scholars, and filmmakers. In addition to its collective activities, the Academy Film Archive has become a leader in film preservation. It has partnered with industry experts on the restoration of several Best Picture winners including How Green Was My Valley (1941), The Sound of Music (1965) and Patton (1970), and has preserved significant documentaries, such as Hearts and Minds (1974 Best Documentary Feature winner), Barbara Kopple s Harlan County USA (1976), as well as works by Les Blank, Charles Guggenheim, and Robert Drew. The Academy Film Archive has also collaborated with LALIFF and the Film and Electronic Arts Department of California State University, Long Beach on film preservation and restoration projects. Bolivian director Jorge Ruiz s Mina Alaska (Alaska Mine, 1968) was restored in 2002, and the Archive produced a new 35mm print of his award-winning documentary Vuelve Sebastiana (Come Back, Sebastiana, 1953). As part of an ongoing effort to collect films that have been nominated or have won Academy Awards, the Archive has acquired a new 35mm print of the Mexican film Macario (1960) by Roberto Gavaldón, which also involved the collaboration of the Archivo de Cine y TV of the Universidad Autónoma de México. Los pequeños gigantes (Little Giants, 1960) by Hugo Butler, working as Hugo Mozo, and Asegure a su mujer (He Trusted His Wife, 1935) by Lewis Seiler, and Cita en la frontera (Encounter on the Border, 1940) by Mario Soffici are other additions to the Latin American film collection. Dios los cría... (Façade, 1980) by Jacobo Morales is the most recent film preserved. The Archive s new home, the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, can be found at the corner of Vine and Fountain streets in Hollywood, California. The Center features the 286-seat Lynwood Dunn Theater, four temperature and humidity-controlled vaults, a Public Access Center, and all of the Archive s offices and workspaces. While living in Venezuela as a teenager, Tina visited Bolívar s birthplace and was appalled by the omission of this visionary leader from the history taught in U.S. schools. She went on to research Bolívar in South America and write this collection of poems, which won the Phi Kappa Phi Award. Inspired by Neruda performing in stadiums, and believing poetry can speak to people from all walks of life, Tina determined to bring spoken word to a broader audience. She accomplished this by making films of the poems, in partnership with Bolivian filmmaker José Sánchez-H. Two of the films aired on Sundance Channel; one of them won the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Ibero-American Film Festival of Montreal. To mark the 200th anniversary of the former Spanish colonies wars of independence, Floricanto Press ( has published The Delirium of Simón Bolívar, a bi-lingual poetry collection by Tina Datsko de Sánchez. Published alongside Pablo Neruda and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Tina s work has won fourteen Hopwood Awards (Arthur Miller received two). 19 LALIFF egeda presentation EGEDA is a non-profit association and collecting society that provides services to producers and the audiovisual industry as a whole. It represents and defends the interests of audiovisual producers in Spain and Latin America is very active in the field of intellectual property rights management. EGEDA US was set up in Los Angeles in 2007 with the idea of having a permanent office on the US West Coast, the heart of the worldwide film industry, which can serve as a liaison to facilitate relations between the American film industry and those of Spain and Latin America. We provide from our office in Los Angeles services and support to Spanish and Latin producers who come to Los Angeles, and to US and Latin producers who are interested in being involved with the Spanish film industry. EGEDA is present every year in many international film festivals and markets such as: American Film Market, Chicago Film Festival, Mercado de Cine Iberoamericano de Guadalajara in Mexico, San Sebastian Film Festival and Malaga Film Festival in Spain, La Mirada Film Festival in Melbourne, Cannes International Film festival and Clermont-Ferrand Short Films International Festival in France. EGEDA has important links with the producers associations in the different Latin American countries, and has already set up collecting societies in eight different countries in Latin America. EGEDA has had a dedicated anti-piracy department since The steps taken have ensured that fraudulent broadcasts of audiovisual works by local television stations and cable networks have declined to practically zero. These anti-piracy activities have also been aimed at "pirate" companies and distributors, and against places open to the public which exhibited works and audiovisual recordings without the requisite authorizations. Without wishing to neglect traditional piracy, the department has been making preparations to fight against audiovisual piracy carried out with new technologies and has achieved relevant successes against these new methods of committing fraud. EGEDA actively co-operates with the different Film Commission in Spain and FAPAE and supports some of its main activities like facilitating the production, coproduction and filming of audio-visual products within the geographical area in which it operates and supporting Spain as a filming location. Any producer of an audiovisual work or recording may be a member of EGEDA, whether Spanish or foreign, a private individual or a corporate body, an original owner or a person entitled by virtue of some of the rights that are managed, represented or defended by EGEDA.
