Here is what you do: Step 1: Step 2: Talk to your child about any of the places you used to Show your child a map and indicate where you live before living in Eagle County. used to live and where you live now. Show your child pictures. You can find a lot of pictures on the internet, if you do not have many. Be sure to talk about differences in: Climate & seasons Food Land (rivers/oceans, mountains, trees) Step 3: Ask your child: What types of activities can people do here that couldn t be done where we used to live. What types of food are different? How did the land look different? What types activities could people do there that we can t do here? Why do people move to a new place? 3 Connection from School to Home Social Studies Grade 5 Unit 1 Different Historical Perspectives Here is an easy activity to help your child understand how major events can influence future events. Here is what you do: Step 1 You will need paper, a pencil, family photos (optional), crayons or markers to draw pictures, and glue Create a timeline with your child about major events in your life. Step 2 Make a list of 5 major events from your life. Find photographs from each major event or draw a picture about the events. Step 3 Order the events according to the dates they took place Glue your pictures or photographs on the timeline and write a brief description of the event. Extension Questions Ask your child: How did events from early in your life influence the events that came later? Have family members share how these major events made them feel. Sigan estos pasos: Primer paso: Necesitan papel, lápiz, fotos de la familia (opcional), pegamento y crayones o marcadores para hacer dibujos. 5 Connection from School to Home Social Studies Grade 5 Unit 1 Historical Clues Here is an easy activity to help your child learn about community historical artifacts. This is what you do: Step 1: Show your child the following pictures OR your own pictures from the past. Tell your child to be a history detective and use the picture clues to try to figure out some information about what is happening in the picture. Each person needs to write down their own answers to the following questions: When do you think the picture was taken? Year? Season? How do you know? What can we figure out about the people? Why do you think that? Why were these people in Eagle County? Why do you think that? What can we figure out about the area at that time? Why do you think that? Compare answers. Are there any differences of opinion? Are there any details in the photos that you can use as evidence for everyone to come to agreement? Pídale que sea un detective de historia y use las fotos para encontrar información de lo que pasa en esa foto. This is what you do: Step 1: Find a good place and time to start an analogy game with your child. You will try to decide on the most useless occupation for a specific location. For example: Scuba diver in Nebraska. Step 2: Ask your child what they want to be when they grow up. Then suggest a few different places with different landscapes and ask where it would be best and worst for them to live. Step 3: Take turns making terrible pairs of occupations and locations. For example- Mountain climber in Florida Step 4: Discuss why that is a bad pair. For example: Where would a scuba diver go in Nebraska? There are no oceans there for them to dive in.
