Por favor siga estas instrucciones con atención para la seguridad de su niño y para evitar que el procedimiento sea cancelado. Una semana antes del procedimiento Instrucciones especiales sobre medicinas: es posible que le pidan que su niño no tome sus medicinas antes del procedimiento. Una enfermera lo llamará para darle las instrucciones. La leche materna no se considera líquido transparente. Si no sigue estas instrucciones de alimentación, el procedimiento de su niño tendrá que ser cancelado y programarse para otro día. Si no ha recibido la llamada con instrucciones 2 días laborables antes de la cirugía, por favor llame al Centro de Cirugía al El baño es importante para la prevención de infecciones. Reduce el riesgo de infección en el sitio del catéter. Bañe a su niño en la tina o en la ducha la mañana antes del procedimiento o la noche anterior. Please follow these instructions closely for the safety of your child and to prevent the procedure from being cancelled. (Date) Procedure: Your child s procedure will take place in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Seattle Children s Hospital Surgery Center. One week before the procedure Special Medicine Instructions: You may be asked to stop giving your child their medicine before the procedure. A nurse will call you with your child s special medicine instructions. You may write them in the space provided: If your child is having a permanent device implanted, like an atrial septal defect device, they will need to take aspirin the day before the procedure. A nurse will call you with dosing instructions. Heart transplant patients should ask their transplant nurse for special medicine instructions. Please inform your cardiologist of all medicines your child is taking. Sick child: If your child becomes ill with fever, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, runny nose or breathing problems within 1 week of the procedure date, call the Cardiology Clinic at We may reschedule the procedure for when your child is fully recovered. This is for your child s safety. Call the Surgery Center at if your child wakes up ill the morning of the procedure. 1 of 3

Space is provided if you would like to take notes. What time your child s procedure is scheduled When to arrive for check-in When your child can last eat solid food and drink milk When your child can last drink clear liquids like clear apple juice (without pulp), 7UP or water. Breast milk is not considered a clear liquid. If you do not follow these eating instructions, your child s procedure must be cancelled and rescheduled. If you do not receive this phone call 2 business days before the surgery, call the Surgery Center at Bathing is an important part of preventing infections. Bathing will lower the risk of your child getting an infection at the catheter site. The night before or the morning of the procedure, give your child a bath or shower. Remove nail polish from both fingers and toes before the procedure. Day of the procedure Please arrive on time. Park on Level 6 of the Ocean parking garage and check in at the main Registration desk. Before the procedure, female patients 12 years and older will be required to provide a urine sample for pregnancy screening. Signing consent forms: Remember, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and foster parents who are granted physical custody of a child may not have legal rights to sign for the child s surgery. A parent or legal guardian with medical decision-making rights must come with the child having surgery or be available by phone to give verbal consent. What to bring to the procedure A list of all medicines and herbal supplements your child is taking or the medicines themselves A copy of legal papers granting you rights to make decisions about surgery for this child (if this applies) All medical insurance cards or coupons 2 of 3

Your child may need to be admitted overnight after the procedure. Bringing other children: If possible, do not bring other children to the hospital. If you must bring them, arrange to have another adult with them at all times. Tips to prepare your child for the hospital Talk to your child about the hospital visit and what will happen. Visit our Web site for tips. Go to and click Preparing Your Child. Have apple juice, Pedialyte, and other clear drinks at home for after the procedure. Arrange for a safe ride home for your child. Make sure the car has your child s car seat or booster seat inside. Adult patients will need another adult with them to drive them home after the procedure. Caring for your child at home after the procedure After the procedure the catheters are removed. A large bandage is placed over the catheter insertion site. Your child must remain flat and still and keep their leg straight for 4 to 6 hours after the procedure. Your child will stay in recovery for 1 hour after the procedure and return to you in the outpatient recovery area, or on the inpatient floor. You will receive instructions about caring for your child at home before you leave the hospital. Questions?
