American historiography has established since the occupation of the Philippines a binary opposition between a medieval Spanish colonial system and a modern American benevolent system. This binary opposition has remained deep-rooted from the very beginning of the twentieth century until present. American historiography has systematically denied the restructuring implemented by Spanish colonial rule at the end of the nineteenth century. One of the research areas is the deconstruction of American discourse about the anachronism of Spanish colonial system. Obviously the medievalism inferred by American historiography made the indigenous unable for self-government. A second research area is a deep study of the press published in the Philippines. American historiography stated that Filipino press was primarily political organs, not business institutions. The press as political arm was a Spanish inheritance. Moreover, American scholars have spread the argument that there was censorship during Spanish term and American brought to the Filipinos the freedom of the press. This is a mythogeneis. In fact, the control of public opinion was harsher under the American colonial rule than under that of the Spanish. In 1901 two acts were passed: the Sedition act and the Criminal Libel act with the object of repressing public criticism.

2 Last research area is the construction of native societies in Southeast Asian Studies before the arrival of colonialism. In these societies called by Anglo-Saxon narrative premodern, women played a very important role, sometimes more important than that of men. To research about this last topic it is not enough to consult archival sources. It is worth to revisit native sources such as literature, art and inscriptions. Gloria Cano was awarded with a scholarship by Singaporean government to do a PhD. at the National University of Singapore in Southeast Asian Studies Programme. This university is among the twenty best universities of the world. Moreover, in 2003 she got another scholarship of the Asian Research Institute (ARI) for her fieldwork in the United States. After finishing her PhD. she received a Juan de la Cierva scholarship from Sometimes she collaborates as international staff and blind referee in the journal Philippine Studies, analyzing and reviewing different articles, above all those related to Spanish colonial rule.
