1 RICHMOND TODAY MARCH 2014 A CHEVRON RICHMOND PUBLICATION Chevron Launches Air Monitoring Program BY MATT DIAZ As an engineer on the Richmond Refinery Air Team, my job is to make sure our operations maintain good air quality in Richmond. I spend a lot of time analyzing data from the Richmond Community Air Monitoring Program, a new partnership with the City of Richmond and Argos Scientific that provides real-time data about air quality in our community. Data is collected from three stations along the refinery s fenceline and three neighborhood stations North Richmond, Atchison Village and Point Richmond. Data is reported in real time at meaning anyone can see what s in the air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Since the program launched last year, the air monitors have not detected any health risks to date. I monitor data every day. If I see a reading that looks concerning, I use weather data to identify where the source could be coming from. If the refinery is the potential source, the Chevron Fire Department investigates it. 2 Air Monitoring: A Community Resource Over the past two years, Chevron has worked with air quality experts and community members to implement a state-of the-art air monitoring program in Richmond. As a result of an open and collaborative process, community members helped select the locations for the air monitoring stations. In addition, Chevron Richmond has also hosted two open house community meetings in North Richmond and Atchison Village and a telephone town hall, where more than 3,400 residents joined in to hear about the program. And so far, based on the chemicals the air monitoring system is monitoring for, the air quality in Richmond is good. 3 How It Works So, What are Those Clouds? The clouds you sometimes see over the refinery are really just steam clouds. Specialized cooling towers recycle hot water so it can be re-used at the refinery. During the cooling process some of the hot water evaporates and is visible as steam clouds. The color of the steam clouds is affected by the weather and temperature. The infographic below illustrates the different types of steam clouds you may see depending on weather conditions.
