1 The Official Publication for the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo JUNE 2013 The Volume 16 Issue 5 Good News To the Heart of the Diocese through the Heart of Christ: Seminarian pilgrimage heads to the lakeshore INSIDE NEWS 2 New diocesan Commissions 3 Bishop s Perspective 6 Three Men to be ordained 9 Vacation Bible Schools 10 Página en Español Parishes begin migrant ministry outreach During the summer months close to 20,000 migrant farmworkers from Texas, Florida and parts of Central America come to the diocese for seasonal work. Parishes form groups to visit some of the 300 different camps to welcome the workers and provide fun activities for the children. Additionally the diocese welcomes members of the religious communities and visiting clergy who aid in sacramental preparation and in the celebration of the Mass. Victoria Radleigh, Coordinator of High School Youth Ministry for St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Portage, takes a youth group to visit the camp each week. She says that while many youth are shocked to hear stories regarding the long hours, labor intensive work, camp living conditions, and constant cross country moving that these families experienced they have their Catholic faith in common. Youth came to see that we may live in different parts of the world, speak different languages, or have different opportunities, but through the sharing of our faith, we are one family in Christ, she said. For more information on volunteering for migrant ministry contact: Veronica Rodriguez, ; vrodriguez@dioceseofkalamazoo.org By Kim Beaubien Seminarians are hitting the road again. The diocesan seminarians and college-affiliates will embark on an annual diocesan pilgrimage this month in the Lakeshore Deanery. The one-week pilgrimage will begin with a kick-off dinner at the Lawrence Education Center at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo on June 14th. Saturday the seminarians will begin their journey from Benton Harbor and this year they will be biking and boating along the way. The theme will once again be, To the Heart of the Diocese through the Heart of Christ. Christ lives in the Eucharist and in the people, so we are making this diocesan pilgrimage, visiting the people in their churches, really to Christ, said Rev. Chris Derda, Director of Vocations and Ongoing Priestly Formation. The pilgrimage, which was held for the first time last summer in the Central Deanery, had many positive effects for both seminarians and parishioners said Fr. Derda. The seminarians themselves had the opportunity to grow in fraternity with each other. The seminarians got to Diocese plans new resources to build faith in the home And the survey says The results from a diocesan-wide survey on the Domestic Church conducted last November and December have been tabulated and will be used to assist the diocesan offices in creating new faith formation initiatives. The survey, which drew close to 3,000 responses in both English and Spanish representing all parishes and missions in the diocese, asked for valuable input on family faith activities. The results are being used to help form new resources aimed at strengthening the domestic church. When asked about current faith practices in their households, the top three survey responses were: placing a high value on being moral and trying to always do the right thing; faith as a strong part of their household identity; and daily prayer. When asked what types of parish services would be useful in strengthening the faith life in their households, the top three survey responses were: guidance in understanding Catholic moral teachings; promotion of Catholic internet, book and media resources; and household prayer resources. The Diocesan Secretariat for Parish Life and Lay Leadership has spent the past several months entering data and analyzing results. Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth is one of the Domestic Church initiatives. This training process is hosted by dioceses for changing the way parishes/schools partner with parents. Developed by NFCYM and presented in partnership with the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL), the National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers (NACFLM) and the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Story continued page 5 know each other and learn how to cooperate together on a major project, said Fr. Derda. Learning to collaborate will only help them when they become priests, God willing. Visiting the parishes in the diocese also had the benefit of raising vocation awareness throughout the diocese and planted the seeds for further vocations. The pilgrimage gives people a chance to meet our diocesan seminarians as a group at many of our parishes. Many people have never seen a group of seminarians before. It gives them hope for the future of the Church, said Fr. Derda. God is giving us vocations, but we are just not aware of it. Seeing this hope, people are motivated to support our seminarians even more. At each of the stops along the pilgrimage, the seminarians introduced themselves and shared their vocation stories. They also asked for donations to start a diocesan Seminarian Endowment Fund. Last year, Catholic Extension awarded the Diocese of Kalamazoo a grant called the Seminarian Endowment Challenge. The diocese was given the challenge to raise over $50,000 in gifts of $1,000 or more by December 31, Donations would then be matched by another $50,000 from Catholic Extension to begin a new endowment fund to secure seminarian education and formation in the diocese for generations to come. The diocese succeeded in raising $72,520 including $57,000 in gifts of $1,000 or more by the end of the year. With the $50,000 in matching funds from Catholic Extension, the Office for Vocations and Ongoing Priestly Formation has $122,520 to begin their Seminarian Endowment Fund. 2 2 The Good News Waiting in Joyful Hope JUNE 2013 From the Editor By Victoria Cessna Communication Director & Editor of The Good News This time I was pretty sure the end was near. For my beautifully neglected peace lily that is. Her leaves were so drooped it was almost like she was sleeping. Dried out brown leaves dotted her appearance. I tried placing it in a common area, hoping that would make me remember to water her. It s almost a given, having not inherited my mother s green thumb, that most of my plants are doomed. But not this one. Each time it s in danger of being chucked into the garbage bin I make one last ditch effort at revival. And amazingly it works. I can t help but marvel what a little water and nurturing does for my plant. She springs up almost with the speed of a jack-in-the-box. It s really not rocket science. Plants need water to grow. Just a little attention. Just a little love. Not unlike our faith. Sometimes the bustle of spring activities, darting from sports games to family gatherings to school events can leave me feeling a bit like my tired lily. Maybe that s why I love summer. Sure, it s a great opportunity to bask in the much-anticipated warmth and shed all the trappings of winter. But summer, with its slower pace, also brings an opportunity to refresh, renew our spirit give our faith a little extra water. A little more attention. A little more love. In a recent homily, Pope Francis said: The church doesn t need couch-potato Catholics; it needs believers with apostolic zeal, willing to preach the uncomfortable words of Christ. And if we annoy people with this zeal for Christ, then blessed be the Lord. I t may seem counter-intuitive to think of these summer months as a time to dig a little deeper in our faith but without the countless demands on our schedules it s actually the ideal time. How do we do this? Try grabbing the kids and on the way to the beach stop at an outdoor Mary garden or stations of the cross for an impromptu prayer service. Or along with your thriller and romance beach reads consider adding an inspiration book (anything by Fr. James Martin has my thumbs up. ) Or even follow the Pope on Twitter (@Pontifex) for a daily dose of papal wisdom and encouragement. Sing. Dance. Play. Laugh. And if you do, you will actually be living out some of those uncomfortable words of Jesus: I assure you, unless you change and become like little children, you will not enter the kingdom of God [Matt. 18:3]. Whatever water you choose, a little bit could go a long way to refreshing your spirit. New Diocesan Commissions formed Ministry to Persons with Disabilities Bishop Paul J. Bradley has appointed seven people to form an advisory body to the bishop on all matters pertaining to persons with disabilities. The Diocesan Commission for Ministry to Persons with Disabilities, staffed by Lisa Irwin from the Secretariat for Parish Life and Lay Leadership, is in the initial chartering process. The Commission will meet over the next couple months to complete their charter including their vision, outcomes and guidelines. Once chartered, they will serve as Lay Ecclesial Ministry Bishop Paul J. Bradley has appointed eight people from all around the diocese to serve on a new Diocesan Commission for Lay Ecclesial Ministry. The commission will be served by Deacon Kurt Lucas, Executive Director of the Secretariat for Parish Life and Lay Leadership, and has been charged to establish and advise a diocesan program of Lay Ecclesial Ministry formation. The members include: Jason Aiello, Kalamazoo (Central Deanery); Citlalli Soto, Sturgis (Southeast Deanery); Kris Collins, Benton Harbor (Lakeshore Deanery); Ana Teresa Bello, Battle Creek (Eastern Deanery); Sheila Clearwater, (Northern Deanery); Very Rev. Joe McCormick OSA, pastor, Our Lady of the Lake, Edwardsburg (Southwest Deanery), Sharon Eaton, Buchanan (Southwest Deanery), and Dr. Michelle both an advisory and working body to help meet the needs of persons with disabilities in the diocese. According to Irwin, the diocese currently hosts a day of reflection in the fall and a retreat in the spring for persons with disabilities. She hopes to provide more resources and programs in the future. The broad range of perspectives and experiences of the people on the commission will help in assessing and addressing the needs out there. Valella, Battle Creek (Eastern Deanery). A Lay Ecclesial Minister is a lay person whose service in, to and through the Church requires a particular level of professional competence. They are authorized by the hierarchy to serve publicly in the local church and provide leadership in a particular area of ministry. They work in collaboration with the hierarchy of the church and have received an appropriate level of preparation and formation for their particular responsibilities. While the people serving in our parishes are doing excellent work, in a diocese like ours they are frequently neither degreed nor certified, said Deacon Lucas. One of the long-term goals of this Commission for Lay Ecclesial Ministry is to establish a program where people can achieve local certification and, if they want it, The members on the commission are: Joyce Bede, St. Monica, Kalamazoo; Dr. James Brennan, Holy Angels, Sturgis; Anne Houghton, St. Mary, Bronson; Katrina Ogata, Ss. John and Bernard, Benton Harbor; Kelly Ball, St. Joseph, Kalamazoo; Lisa Kisiel, St. Augustine Cathedral; and Sheryl O Connor, Sacred Heart, Watson. Very Rev. Bill Jacobs, Diocesan Chaplain for Persons with Disabilities is also an Ad Hoc member. national certification as well. Since we have no Catholic college or seminary in our diocese, most people seeking to obtain certification now must commute long distances or take courses online. We want to know if we can change that if we can make it easier for the Lay Ecclesial Ministers in our diocese to achieve certification. The Commission for Lay Ecclesial Ministry is just in its beginning stages. Currently they are researching programs and initiatives which might be adapted to the needs of our diocese. More information, including the names and terms of commission members, is available on the diocesan website. If anyone is interested in learning more about the Commission or would like to provide input, they are encouraged to contact Deacon Lucas at or klucas@dioceseofkalamazoo.org. Making a Report of Sexual Misconduct A report of sexual misconduct may be initiated at the Diocese of Kalamazoo s Sexual Misconduct Question and Reporting Line: A caller will be requested to provide his or her name and telephone number. 3 JUNE 2013 The Bishop s Perspective God is talking are you listening? During a recent Confirmation Mass, I was asking the candidates to tell me what were some signs of springtime? I heard the normal responses: lilacs are blooming and fragrant; mama robins are tenaciously protecting their young babies in the nest; trees are filling out with leaves; and there is more daylight. But one young man added a sign of Spring I had never heard before when he proudly stated: Strutting Turkeys! When I asked him to elaborate, he educated me about the fact that turkeys strut around in springtime because this is their mating season, and they re happy to be alive. Through these springtime weeks, I have thoroughly enjoyed traveling around the nine counties of our diocese celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation at many of our parishes. At every celebration, I am always struck by the youthful enthusiasm of our young Confirmation candidates who themselves are in the springtime of their lives, and are happy and looking to their futures filled with possibilities. In addition to praying that the Holy Spirit will fill their hearts and souls through the Sacrament of Confirmation, I also pray that each and every one of them will discern well, with the Holy Spirit s guidance, what God is calling them to do with the unique gifts and talents which they have been given; to discern what vocation God has in mind for them. Waiting in Joyful Hope The Good News 3 La Perspectiva del Obispo Dios está hablando. At the end of this month, on June 29th, the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, I look forward with great joy to ordaining to the Holy Priesthood three of our deacons: Benjamin Huynh, Thomas McNally and Evelio Ramirez. Each one has traveled his own unique journey to this point in life. Each one along the way has had to discern, and perhaps more importantly, listen to what God is calling them to do. This is a moment for our entire diocese to rejoice in, and we can all be grateful that each of them has heard God calling them to serve the Church here in our diocese as priests of Jesus Christ. Please keep all three of these soon-to-be-priests in your prayers, even as you pray for all our priests. Also, June is a popular month for weddings as young couples prepare to begin married life together for the rest of their lives. And we pray that this is the vocation that God has called them to live in the sacrament of matrimony. In early June I have the great joy of witnessing the marriage of my niece Stephanie who will be marrying her wonderful fiancée, Carmen, at St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh. Weddings are wonderful moments for families, and all the world, to rejoice in as a man and woman continue their life journey as a couple united in Christ, and enrich the Church and the world through their married love and, we pray, through their children. However, whether you have a special day this June or not, God is calling all of us to discern what our calling is. Our vocation, simply put, is what God calls each of us to do with our lives and everybody from young confirmand to seminarian to a bride or groom all are called by God to know, love and serve Him. The only difference is how each of us uses our God-given gifts and talents to do that. Our catechism teaches us that Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist ground the common vocation of all Christians: the vocation to holiness and to evangelize the world. [CCC 1533] And while it may seem a bit serious to add be holy and evangelize to your summer wish list along with trip to the beach and Tigers Game, if we approach our discernment as an opportunity to deepen our relationship with Jesus then it s not difficult at all. Discovering, and ultimately following, your vocation gives the greatest glory and praise to the One who created you. It is what we were meant to do. Summer, with its relaxed schedule (hopefully) and more leisure time also affords us that ability to really listen with all our hearts, minds and soul. Following are some practical ways to discern what your vocation is. Pray: Spending time with our Lord in the Eucharist by adhering to weekly Mass attendance. Consider spending an hour a week in Eucharistic Adoration taking advantage of the many perpetual Chapels in our diocese. And consider adopting a new daily prayer habit, such as praying the liturgy of the hours and the rosary. These are all wonderful ways to be still and know God is with you and to listen as much as you talk. Recently Pope Francis echoed the importance of prayer, particularly for those who may be called to the religious life. In his Regina Caeli address on World Day of Prayer for Vocations, April 21st, our Holy Father said: Ask Jesus what he wants from you and be brave! Be brave, ask Him!!! Behind and before every vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, is always the strong and intense prayer of someone: a grandmother, a grandfather, a mother, a father, a community... That s why Jesus said, Pray the Lord of the harvest that is, God the Father to send out laborers into his harvest (Mt 9:38). The vocations are born in prayer and from prayer, and only in prayer can they persevere and bear fruit. Participate: As I celebrated the Year of Faith Holy Hours at six of our deaneries in April and May, I was blessed to pray in a very special way with parishioners and to be reminded of all the wonderful outreach and formation activities occurring throughout our great diocese.

National audit shows drop in allegations WASHINGTON The annual audit of diocesan compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People found a drop in the number of allegations, number of victims and number of offenders reported in The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), which gathered data for the report, found the fewest allegations and victims reported since the data collection for the annual reports began in Most allegations reported last year were from the seventies and eighties with many of the alleged offenders already deceased or removed from ministry in the priesthood. The StoneBridge audit, in addition to finding most dioceses Charter compliant, reported that over 99 percent of clerics and over 96 percent of employees and volunteers were trained in safe environment programs. In addition, over 4.6 million children received safe environment training. Background evaluations were conducted on over 99 percent of clerics; 98 percent of educators; 96 percent of employees; and 96 percent of volunteers. Cardinal Dolan in a preface to the report, commended clergy, employees and volunteers trained in safe environment. At the same time we also renew our steadfast resolution never to lessen our common commitment to protect children and young people entrusted to our pastoral care, he said. We seek with equal determination to promote healing and reconciliation for those harmed in the past, and to assure that our audits continue to be credible and maintain accountability in our shared promise to protect and our pledge to heal. In data gathering from dioceses, CARA noted there were 397 allegations, most of them from decades past, against 313 priests or deacons, by 390 individuals. About 84 percent of the victims were male. Half were between 10 and 14 when the abuse began. An estimated 17 percent were between 15 and17, and 19 percent were under age 10. Dioceses and eparchies that responded to the survey reported costs related to allegations at $112,966,427 in Expenses covered settlements, attorney fees, therapy for victims and support for offenders. The total amount expended for dioceses, eparchies and religious orders was $148,338,437. Dioceses and religious orders also spent $26,583,087 for child protection programs. EDITOR S NOTE: The Diocese of Kalamazoo was found in complete compliance during its audit which took place last fall. Pilgrimage: Vacations are wonderful experiences that produce life-long memories whether you are heading to the mountains or the beach. And while vacations are a much-needed respite to recharge ourselves, pilgrimages are also a wonderful option to consider. A pilgrimage is, by its very nature, different than a vacation. Traveling to sacred and holy places dates back to the time ancient Israelites visited the Temple in Jerusalem and was a practice adopted by early Christians. Today, people, travel all over the world to visit famous shrines. However, you need not go any further this summer than our own diocese. Consider participating in one of the Year of Faith pilgrimage stops lead by Fr. Bob Creagan or stopping in at a different parish designated as a pilgrimage stop during this Year of Faith. Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you [Jer. 1:5]. God loves us unconditionally, and He definitely has a plan for each of us. Whether that plan is to a life of service to the Church as an ordained priest, or deacon, or in the religious life; as a married person, helping your spouse to get to Heaven though the vocation to marriage; or using one s God-given talents as a committed single person for each of us, our calling is to live as Jesus has commanded all of us to live: to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. That is how we fulfill the vocation that is basic and shared by all of us through our baptism into Christ, and our universal vocation to grow in holiness and ultimately to get to Heaven. As we move from springtime into Summer, may you be blessed with a peaceful inner quiet that comes from growing in your relationship with our Loving God, Who calls each of us by name. Let us listen attentively and generously respond to God s Call. God bless you, now and always! The Kalamazoo Diocese Council of Catholic Women (KDCCW) is hosting a conference entitled, Catholic Women, on Wednesday June 19 at St. Philip Parish, Battle Creek. The keynote speakers are Mary Collins and Jane Knuth. Mary Collins Collins, the morning keynote presenter, is a life-long Catholic with a heart for helping others appreciate the dignity of womanhood and the irreplaceable role of women in the Catholic Church. Her presentation, Miss Understood, will focus on what the Church teaches about womanhood versus common misunderstandings people have about women in the Catholic Church. She ll also share inspiring stories of great Catholic women making real differences in the world. Scouts earning the rank of Eagle Scout are invited to send in their information to the diocese for special recognition from the bishop. Information regarding the name of the scout, troop number, parish as well as the Eagle Scout Waiting in Joyful Hope Diocese receives national scouting quality award What is Domestic Church The term domestic church has been used by Catholics since antiquity. Traditionally, it referred exclusively to families of the baptized. However, there are many different kinds of households and modern family life takes many forms, including but not limited to the vocation of marriage and the vocation of the single life. And thus the Domestic Church is truly a Church in miniature. As the YOUCAT explains, Nothing in the early Church fascinated people more about the New Way of the Christians than their domestic churches. Often someone believed in the Lord, together with all his household; and many believed and were baptized (Acts 18:8). In an unbelieving world, islands of living faith were formed, places of prayer, mutual sharing, and cordial hospitality. Rome, Corinth, Antioch, the great cities of antiquity, were soon permeated with domestic churches that were like points of light. Even today families in which Christ is at home are the leaven that renews our society. (Question 271) Pictured above: Mission: Impossible scouts work on birthday bags for the Branch Area Food Pantry. Each Bag contains cake mix with frosting and a couple of small gifts for those who are unable to celebrate their birthday. project that details their plan and implementation, photos of the before and after of their project, a brief biography with a picture (preferably from their Court of Honor) as well as how they are living out their Catholic faith can be sent to: Diocese of Kalamazoo, c/o Tim McNamara, 215 N. The Diocese of Kalamazoo has been awarded the National Catholic Committee on Scouting Quality Diocese Award. By providing support, services, and opportunities for the number of Girl and Boy Scout Packs and Troops, while desiring to grow and develop in this support, the Diocese was awarded this by meeting a number of necessary requirements for a quality diocese. Continued cover story Domestic Church Based on those results, they are now considering several new initiatives to help strengthen the domestic church. The initiatives will begin to be implemented during the next year. Look for more complete survey results to be posted on the website later this summer. The following four initiatives are in various stages of implementation: 1. Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth: a program to help strengthen families and youth in the faith, the diocese will offer training in September, in both English and Spanish, and is looking for pilot parishes for the upcoming school year. 2. Renewal of Marriage Preparation: guidelines will be revised for marriage preparation programs and One in Christ (Marriage Discovery) weekends to help give engaged couples a stronger start on their marriage. 3. Building a Social Media outreach: the diocese hopes to implement more social media outreach to households and provide Catholics with more faith resources in the future. 4. Promote Scripture Study and Small Community Sharing in Parishes: the diocese is currently researching the best ways to promote more familybased Scripture study and participation in small faith communities. I ve repeated this ten times this week. Why don t you just tell me right now whether you re going to help me or not, and we can both save a lot of time and paper? She isn t angry, just a little exasperated and honest about it. Questions need to be asked in the responsible practice of charity. It is prudent to determine if a person is truly in need. At St. Vincent de Paul we ask identifying information for family members, income, assets, expenses, and debt. We require proof of assistance from government and charitable sources. Every church and charity in town does the same. Wherever the poor go for help they hear the same questions over and over. I put down my pen and look at her sympathetically. I can understand you re weary of the same interview. What we want is a chance to know you a little. It s much easier to help a friend than a perfect stranger. You would be more likely to give to a friend than a person begging on the street, wouldn t you? No, I would not, she answers. There s too much judging goes on helping friends and family. I know all the reasons why giving them money is a bad idea. But, as a matter of fact, while I was walking here, an old man was smoking cigarettes on the corner. He caught my eye and asked if I had five dollars. Maybe he was going to buy more cigarettes with it. I didn t ask why bother? I reached in my pocket and gave him the two bucks I had. No questions and no judging. Why can t church people be more like that? I gaze back at her and think about what St. Vincent told us: Peace is worth far more than anything they might take from you. I know more about you now than any of these questions will tell me, I say. We are going to give you the $100, but I still need information for our files. Five more questions, and you get the pledge for your electric bill how s that? She shrugs, and then grins. Now I know a little bit about you, too. Popular Theology on Tap series for young adults returns this summer Theology on Tap will kick off this summer, on Fridays from 7 9 p.m., July 5 26 at TGI Fridays in Kalamazoo. Theology on Tap is a program for young adults, college age through their thirties, married or single to gather for fellowship and discussion. Theology on Tap is an opportunity not only to learn about our faith life and grow in it, said Tim McNamara, Associate Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, it s also an opportunity to see that we are not alone in this journey of following God. The theme this year, Who are you? Do you really want to know? is based on God s revelation of Himself in Exodus 3:14. The focus this year will be to help provide recognition of God in our daily lives: our spiritual life, family life, work life and social life, explained McNamara. Speakers will discuss who God wants each of us to be in our spiritual, family, work and social life. A concluding Mass with Bishop Paul J. Bradley and an ice cream social will take place on August 2nd at St. Catherine of Siena parish in Portage. A sponsored ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph.

6 6 The Good News Waiting in Joyful Hope JUNE 2013 Becoming a Priest Deacon Benjamin Huynh St. Francis Parish, Holland On June 29th Bishop Paul J. Bradley will ordain three men to the priesthood for the Diocese of Kalamazoo during a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Augustine Cathedral, Kalamazoo. The Good News spent time with each of the three men to learn a bit more about their vocation and plans for the future. Tell me about yourself and your family. I am the 14th of 18 children and my dad passed away almost five years ago. My mom lives in Holland. Everyone is over here now. Most of my brothers and sisters escaped Vietnam in the 1980s. I escaped Vietnam by boat when I was 14 in I lived in the Philippines for six years. After that I came back to Vietnam. I was stuck in Vietnam for nine years and I just came here [the US] in In 2005 I joined the Vincentian Fathers. In 2008 I left the Vincentians and joined the Diocese of Kalamazoo [as a seminarian] in When did you first consider becoming a priest? When I was young, I was a little hyper. I did a lot of crazy things. My dad wondered what I would become when I grew up. I said I wanted to become a priest. He said, a priest is holy you are crazy. I said, Yes, I want to be a priest so you have to call me Father. I also was an altar server when I was a boy and I used to play Mass with my siblings. When I escaped Vietnam to the Philippines, from that moment I realized that God wanted me to become a priest. It was really serious. I spent some time discerning with the Jesuits but decided I wanted to become a Vincentian. Who influenced your vocation the most? The Vincentian and Vietnamese-Jesuit priests I spent six years with in the Philippines. They influenced not only my priesthood, but my spirituality. What led you to the Diocese of Kalamazoo? God has a plan for everyone. When I came to the United States, I went to California and joined the Vincentians there. I went through postulancy and novitiate, but I found out that community life was not for me. My cousin is a priest for the Diocese of Grand Rapids. He introduced me to a friend of his from Rome, Very Rev. John Fleckenstein, who was the vocation director at the time. When I met Fr. Fleckenstein he thought I would make a good priest and gave me an application. Was anyone surprised by your vocation? I think most of my friends were surprised by it, especially the girls. They all said, You are becoming a priest? Why? You are handsome, funny why are you becoming a priest? What are you looking forward to most about being a priest? Celebrating Mass. Imagine, you hold the Creator in your hands. You are created and now you hold the Creator in your hands. Through my hands, the words of consecration turn the substance of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. That s amazing. How can you explain that? I ask people to pray for me. People have been praying for me to become a priest. Now I tell them to continue to pray for me to be a good and faithful priest. Q. Tell us about your family. I am an Irish-German from a family of four with one younger brother. My brother and I were raised Catholic, but my mom converted to Catholicism only seven years ago, which was an incredible moment for all of us. Q. What is a surprising experience, fact, or skill about you? One thing people probably don't know about me is that, when I was in early grade school, the members of my family had made a promise to each other that we would try to at least put our feet down in every state in the USA before I left for college. Many coolers full of sandwiches and tanks of gasoline later, we had finally succeeded, finally making it to Delaware of all places as the last state we needed to visit during the summer before I went to the University of Steubenville. Q. When were you called? Did you always feel called to be a priest? 7 JUNE 2013 Deacon Thomas McNally St. Monica Parish, Kalamazoo I felt called sometime around the age of seven. Because of this, I honestly cannot remember a time when I did not feel called to be a priest. Q. Who were some of the most influential people on your vocation? Because I was so young, it is difficult to give any one major influence to the beginning of my vocation. There were many influential priests at my home parish over the years who supported me in my vocation- Fr. Robert Consani, Fr. Brian Stanley, Fr. Lawrence Farrell, and Fr. Patrick Craig, among others. Beyond priestly influences, I would also have to say that my parents were very influential on my vocation through their example. Q. What assignments have you had? During my time as a seminarian, I spent one year assigned at St. Augustine Parish as well as a summer at St. Joseph Parish in St. Joseph and a summer at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Portage. All three are excellent parish communities and I enjoyed my time with them very much. Beyond these assignments, I also took part in and eventually lead a ministry to the halfway houses and care facilities for the mentally handicapped in Steubenville, Ohio during my time in college. I have also acted as a tour guide, leading pilgrimages to the tomb of the Apostle Peter under St. Peter s Basilica in Rome, as well as helping as an assistant to the chaplain of a study-abroad program from the University of Mary in Bismarck. Q. What are you looking forward to most as a priest? After so many years in seminary, I am very much looking forward to being in a parish with the people of God. I long to be able to celebrate Mass for them and to be present with them at some of the most important moments in their lives baptism, marriage, and death. I also look forward to hearing confessions and helping people be reconciled to God, freed from their sin, and helping them to experience His ceaseless loving forgiveness. If I'm being perfectly honest, after twenty years of school, I m also looking forward to finally being out of the classroom and not worrying about exams or term papers anymore, at least for a little while. I would rather give a Sunday homily than write a ten-page term paper any day. Waiting in Joyful Hope Q. Tell us about your family. We are 11 in my family, my parents, Luis and Celia and my eight siblings. They live in La Ceja (Antioquia) in Colombia, a little town located in the mountains in the east of the Department (State) of Antioquia in Colombia. Q. What is a surprising experience, skill or fact about you? I studied Plastic Arts in Colombia. I also worked as an Art Teacher in Ciudad Don Bosco, a Center for Prevention and Promotion of Youth at risk in Medellin (Colombia). The lessons I learned from these young people, helped me a lot to keep open my heart to God s call as I feel they need leaders, witness of Christ Love and Mercy, to help them keep going in life and reach happiness as God s children. Q. When did you first hear the call to the priesthood? It was in my early childhood, in the atmosphere of my house, filled with daily Mass, the holy rosary and visiting with my mother Evelio Ramirez Immaculate Conception, Hartford the people in the Nursing Home, praying with them and giving them some comfort. Also, my participation in a small group, formed with children my age (7 years old), siblings and neighbors. With them I celebrated Mass, had talks about Jesus and took Our Blessed Mother in procession to the homes of those who were sick in our street. That was part of our fun time, but it was something serious; I was always the priest and they helped and supported me. Q. Did you always want to be a priest or did that come later in life? I wanted to be priest since my childhood, but as I entered in the middle and High school years [the call] was there, but not with the same intensity as before. I went on life studying art and getting a job to support myself and put aside this call that was always there. I think I can make mine the famous words of Saint Augustine: Late I have loved you, and here I am. Q. Who were some of the most influential people in your vocation story? My vocation story and my whole life have been influenced so much by the presence and example of my mother, however, I need to be sincere and recognize that the example of both my parents and The Good News 7 my relatives have been the most influential. In my college years I found some priests that were great examples of faith and service to the poor. Q. What assignments have you had as a seminarian and what have you learned from those experiences? In my seminary time, I was so blessed with pastoral assignments that really gave me an insight in what it means to be a priest. To work in a parish setting with all the different challenges either in the city or rural, big or small atmosphere is a great challenge that marked my whole life. In Mississauga, ON in Canada, in a city environment or in Hartford, Mich., with migrants or in Delray Beach, Fla., with their multicultural ministries and service to the Gospel, I learned a lot, which left a deep lesson and raise high the bar for me in my vocation journey. Q. What are you looking forward to most about being ordained a priest? I look forward to save my soul and be channel of God s grace, may others be saved and come to know about God s love and mercy; bring people closer to Jesus friendship and be part of those who build the Kingdom of God in this world I live in. In the past, educators have used these grants to attend training on childhood literacy, Common Core Curriculum standards, and the Gesell assessment tool for kindergarten readiness, to name a few. Grants are awarded on an individual, building-wide, or multi-school basis. This year, six grants of $500 were given to individual educators: Peggy Hanley of Lake Michigan Catholic Elementary School in St. Joseph, Kristina Nuter of Lake Michigan Catholic High School in St. Joseph, Rhonda Szymanski and Sharon Gregorski of St. Mary s School in Niles, Shannon Saxton Murphy of St. Stanislaus School in Dorr, Lori Pearson of St. Augustine Cathedral School in Kalamazoo, and Elena Migaldi of St. Augustine Cathedral School in Kalamazoo. 8 8 The Good News Waiting in Joyful Hope JUNE and us By George Weigel Baseball and movies don t often play well together. William Bendix as a Marine who dies happy in Guadalcanal Diary because he s just heard that the Dodgers have won is an icon of 1940s Americana; the same William Bendix as the Bambino in The Babe Ruth Story is a sad business, to be consigned to the (bad) memory bank. The Natural and Bull Durham have their moments, but when push comes to shove, they re both, finally, about something other than baseball. 61*, Billy Crystal s made-for-hbo flick about Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and the chase for Ruth s single-season home-run is a terrific story of male friendship (and gave this lifelong Yankees-deplorer a soft spot for the 1961 Bronx Bombers); but computer-graphic reconstructions of old ballparks being what they were when it was made in 2001 i.e., not that persuasive 61* just misses being a great baseball movie. Now comes 42, the long-awaited cinematic telling of the Jackie Robinson story, which I recently saw on a snowy April Sunday afternoon in the Twin Cities. I wouldn t call it a great movie (like, for example, The King s Speech); but it s a very, very good movie, and an entirely plausible challenger to 61* as the best baseball movie ever made. Chadwick Boseman captures some of the fierce intensity, and a lot of the raw courage, of the man who broke baseball s color line. It wasn t easy to imagine Han Solo, Indiana Jones, or President James Marshall (Air Force One) as Branch Rickey, the cigar-chomping, ultra-methodist general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers whose Christian decency and shrewd business sense led him to take on the entire baseball establishment by signing Jackie Robinson; but Harrison Ford pulls off that role with aplomb. Kudos, too, to Nicole Beharie for capturing the steely grace, beauty and guts of Rachel Robinson, Jackie s wife, who put up with all the racism that her husband endured and who, with him, embodied for millions of Americans the meaning of the civil rights anthem, We Shall Overcome. Columnist George F. Will once wrote that Jackie Robinson was second a very close second to Martin Luther King Jr. in the pantheon of African Americans who reversed a nation s racial attitudes and helped create what is, today, the most racially egalitarian society in history. 42 is a useful reminder of just how much those men, and others, had to overcome: Robinson s teammates are, to put it gently, unenthusiastic about his presence among them; the Phillies race-baiting manager, Ben Chapman, mercilessly harasses Number 42 when he comes up to the plate; the Cardinals Enos Slaughter deliberately spikes Robinson on a routine play at first base; Pirates pitcher Fritz Ostermueller throws a killer pitch that smashes into Robinson s temple (in the days before batting helmets); potty-mouthed fans remind us just how foul American racial epithets could be and how children were taught to imitate the sins of their parents. And through it all, Jackie Robinson, in that first, crucial season, stuck to the promise he had made Branch Rickey: he would have the courage not to fight back, save in playing some of the most electrifying baseball ever seen, especially on the basepaths. Branch Rickey was dubbed the Mahatma by a Brooklyn sportswriter who thought the Dodger g.m. s style akin to of Mohandas K. Ghandi, whom John Gunther once described as an incredible combination of Jesus Christ, Tammany Hall and your father. And to the credit of screenwriter Brian Helgeland, 42 doesn t gloss over Rickey s Christian faith, or Jackie Robinson s, and the role that Christian conviction played in forging their relationship and their ultimate victory. Still, when the packed crowd in that Minneapolis theatre burst into applause at the end of the movie a few weeks ago, I didn t read it as an endorsement of Methodist theology or piety. Rather, it seemed to me welcome evidence that, amidst vast cultural and political confusions, Americans still believe in moral truths, moral absolutes, and moral courage and yearn for opportunities to celebrate them. There s an important lesson in that for the country s religious and political leaders. Together with the Holy Father, we become pilgrims of charity providing assistance in poor dioceses where many are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support; in regions where Catholics are persecuted for their faith; and in nations overloaded with refugees and victims of war and natural disasters, said Lisa Irwin, Associate Director, Parish Life & Lay Leadership. (Romanos 13,9-10).
