2 2 La Voz Bilingüe March 25, 2015 Latinos and cancer statistics There are two kinds of readers of this article those that have the privilege of taking a quick glance and casting it aside because they haven t had anyone close deal with the disease, or those that seek hope in statistics and information about the disease and can only picture the face of a loved one battling cancer. Increasingly, members of the Latino James Mejia community are looking for answers as cancer rates increase. testing in the Latino community. The two factors highlighted as most likely leading to the disease are increasing age and family history. [1] Cancer and Adult Latinas Almost 60,000 new cases of cancer are predicted to be diagnosed in U.S. Latino women every year. The highest occurrence is in breast cancer, second highest incidence is colorectal cancer, and third is cancer of the thyroid. The American Cancer Society reported that just over 17,000 new cases were anticipated for The Good News: The trend in diagnoses of breast cancer is decreasing for women overall and Latino women have a lower rate of incidence 26 percent lower than White women. The lowest rates reported are for foreign born Latino women whose incidence is 50 percent lower than native born U.S. Latino women. The Bad News: Latino women are less likely to be diagnosed at early stages of cancer than their White counterparts. Latinas have lower rates of mammogram screenings and lower rates of returning to the doctor s office after findings of abnormal results. For these reasons and others, Latinas die from breast cancer at higher rates than White women. [1] First Generation Immigrants Some cancers are attributed to infectious agents and are likely to be found in developing countries including Central and South America. Immigrant Latinos have higher incidence with these types of cancer than second and third generation Latinos. They types of cancer in this category include stomach, liver, and uterine cervix cancer. [1] Children s Cancer Cancer is rare in children and less is known about its cause than with adult cancer. Researchers attribute most childhood cancer to radiation exposure, virus and genetic inheritance. Leukemia, brain, and lymphoma are the most common types of cancer in children. The incidence for Latino children is lower than for White children and economic standing is correlated with incidence. As with cancer in adults, early detection and treatment are critical for better health outcomes. [1] Healthy Habits - Some cancer cannot be avoided. It is the result of hereditary or environmental factors which went undiscovered for too long. However, for some cancers, healthy habits can prevent or mitigate the occurrence of the disease. Healthy eating, not smoking, regular exercise, weight loss and regular medical check-ups are imperative to catch and treat any cancer early. Take Warning Signs Seriously Abnormal masses, frequent headaches with vomiting, sudden changes in vision, unexplained weight loss are all warning signs that should be announced to your physician quickly. Ignoring such signs over time could be costly. Talk About It The Latino community must cast aside its predilection to keep quiet when diagnosed with cancer. In order to combat the disease effectively, it must be discovered and treated at the earliest possible stages. We must have community conversations around the disease to demystify its occurrence and support those that are living with cancer. Ask for Help Though our parents trained us to be independent and not ask for help, especially from strangers, doing so in this case could be the difference between life and death. For those with loved ones treating the disease, you must reach out to ask for help from physicians treating the disease and non-profits specializing in helping families through the disease. In Colorado, we have some of the finest cancer treatment and support facilities in the country but they can only be helpful if you make known your needs. Get Health Insurance Health insurance leads to regular checkups leads to early detection = better chance for treatment and survival. With new health plans including Obamacare, even those with pre-existing conditions can obtain health insurance. Now is the time to get covered and see your physician regularly. In our community, 50 percent of men and 33 percent of women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime. For Latino males, 20 percent will end up dying because of cancer and 17 percent of Latino women will die from the disease. In fact, cancer is the most likely way for Latinos to die with 21 percent of all Latino adult death attributed to cancer and 15 percent of all Latino children deaths attributed to the disease. In short, the picture for Latinos is no rosier than for the average U.S. population and in some cases, is worse. The American Cancer Society has published an extensive report detailing the incidence of cancer amongst Latinos from and for anyone who has experienced cancer themselves or with family member or loved ones with cancer, the survey is difficult to read. Cancer and Adult Latino Males For men, prostate cancer is the most common form of the disease. Colorectal and lung cancer have the second and third highest incidence. Researchers expect nearly 55,000 new cases of cancer to be diagnosed in U.S. Latino males every year. Of the 55,000 new cases, 28 percent - over 15,000 cases are reported as prostate cancer. This award recognizes exceptional leaders who are capable of bringing together communities to define and solve problems. Soto was nominated by many individuals. Under her dynamic leadership, over 70,000 Latinos received culturally competent, linguistically appropriate health education and disease prevention services in 2013 along, wrote Cindy Pena, Latino Leadership Institute, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver. I am honored to receive this award and work with many great organizations, but realize there is still a lot of work to be done, said Soto. My community is ready for the changes happening in the state. My job is to be the voice and face of those who feel they can t speak up to improve healthcare for the immigrant community. Driver s License Law partially funded On Wednesday, March 18 the Conference Committee on SB voted unanimously to restore partial spending authority to the Department of Revenue for the Driver s License Law established under the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act (SB13-251). The vote will allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to provide licenses in three offices instead of one office. The funds are already there, said Lizeth Chacón, Executive Director of local advocacy organization Rights for All People (RAP). People who are applying for driver s licenses under SB-251 are paying for the law out of their own pockets. Joint Budget Committee members have decided to give only partial authorization of the funds that have been collected for this law. What do they plan to do with the rest of the funds? Today s decision is a step on the right direction but it is unfair to Coloradans the Department of Revenue should receive full spending authorization over all of the $166,000 that have been collected in fees, not partial authorization. We will continue to work to ensure that our community have full access to this important law, said Chacón. 5 March 25, 2015 La Voz Bilingüe 5 A week in review Africa Medical workers kidnapped by ISIS: Twenty medical workers in a hospital in Sirte, Libya were kidnapped by ISIS. Thirty members of the group attacked the hospital while a bus was waiting to take the workers to Tripoli, Libya. It is believed ISIS didn t want the workers to leave the city because they are the only medical team in Sirte that treated the group. American workers return from Sierra Leone after Ebola exposure: Eight American workers who were exposed to Ebola have been flown back to the United States. The workers were exposed to the virus in Sierra Leone. Four of the workers will be evaluated on the campus of the University of Nebraska, while the others will stay in Georgia and Maryland. The workers will be restricted from public places and have voluntarily agreed to leave the housing they are being provided. Europe Man attacked by polar bear: A man camping in Svalbard, Norway was attacked by a polar bear. The bear injured both his face and his arm. The man was on a ski and snowmobile trip with five other people. The group shot and killed the polar bear. Authorities quickly flew the man to a hospital and he is currently recovering from the attack. U.K. sends military advisers to Ukraine: The United Kingdom has sent military advisers to train Ukrainian troops in Ukraine. The aid is being sent to help the Ukrainian government fight pro-russian separatists. Prime Minster David Cameron also announced that Britain would provide 15 million pounds ($22.3) million in humanitarian aid. The United States has also announced they will provide support to Ukraine during an upcoming training program for Ukraine s National Guard. Kim Jong Un to visit Russia?: Russian officials are expecting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to attend World War II anniversary celebrations in Moscow. North Korea state media has not issued a statement about the invitation, but North Korea has accepted Russia s invitation. The trip would be Kim Jong Un s first foreign trip as North Korea s leader. Russia is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union s victory over Nazi Germany. Plane crash: A plane crashed in the foothills of the French Alps on Tuesday, Mar. 24. Germanwings Flight 9525, which was traveling between Barcelona, Spain and Dusseldorf, Germany, when it crashed near Digne-les-Bains with 144 passengers and crew aboard, including 16 students and two teachers from a German high school. Initial reports indicate there are no survivors and that the plane disintegrated upon impact. The black box has been retrieved. Latin America Bus falls, leaves 50 dead: Fifty people died after a bus fell nearly 1,100 feet. The bus was carrying worshipers who were on their way to a religious event in Serra Dona Francisca. 12 others were injured and authorities were only able to recover four bodies of the deceased. Road accident deaths in Brazil are nearly double the amount that occur in the United States. Mexican journalist fired after story about Mexican President: Mexican journalist Carmen Aristegui has been fired from the Mexican radio station MVS. Two of her colleagues were also fired after the three journalists released a story involving details regarding conflict of interest real estate deals between Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and his wife. Aristegui commented on the situation stating This team of journalists is ready to fight for their freedom of expression. Middle East Lawyer killed in Pakistan: Samiullah Afridi was killed by unidentified gunmen in his car in Peshawar, Pakistan. Afridi was a former lawyer for the doctor who helped the CIA kill Osama bin Laden. He represented Dr. Shakeel Afridi, who was convicted of treason in The doctor helped the CIA collect DNA samples from relatives on Bin Laden to verify his presence in Abbottabad, Pakistan. North America Colorado Navy SEAL dies: A parachute accident left 29 year old Jason Kortz dead. The 29 year old Navy SEAL died due to his parachute failing to open during a training exercise. 6 Commentary / Comentario La Voz Bilingüe I was a 9th grader at Horace Mann Junior High School when I had my first and last visit to Casa Mayan, a restaurant at old Auraria s 9th Street that now is one of the academic buildings of the university campus. Mr. Fred Manzanares our Spanish teacher took us there to celebrate the end of a successful year. Years later when I came to work on the Auraria Campus we used David Conde th Street Park as a meeting place. Now the old Casa Mayan will be hosting an exhibit to celebrate the life of Richard T. Castro on April The place is most appropriate because Rich Castro had a deep relationship with Auraria as he was a student who graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver before going to the University of Denver to complete a Masters Degree in Social Work and he fought for the Aurarians who had to leave in order for the campus to be built. The exhibit will be prefaced by a reception on Monday April 13th, 5-8:30 pm at the St. Cajetan Event Center. The reception will feature testimonials led by Lt. Governor Joe García, Mayor Federico Peña, Senator Don Sandoval and Mayor Wellington Webb. Three of the four were important partners to Rich during the dynamic period that brought greatness to Denver and the Colorado community. At the time of his passing Rich was serving in the Peña administration as the Executive Director of the Denver Agency for Human Rights and Community Relations. I met Rich soon after arriving in Denver from New Mexico and found a man of deep convictions and a seriousness at times hidden by his informal nature and his ability to be light-heart with laughter at every turn. His service in the state legislature occurred at a moment when the Latino community was in the process of consolidating the gains of the Chicano Movement. When I began at Metropolitan State we designed a Chicano Studies major and successfully presented it to the Colorado Commission of Higher Education. During the research that led to the construction of the major we found that Rich Castro had been an instructor in the unit that eventually became the Department of Chicano Studies. Before becoming the Executive Director of the Denver Agency for Human Rights and Community Relations Castro served 5 consecutive terms in the Colorado House of Representatives where he distinguished himself as a defender of human rights and the education of the culturally distinct. This commitment has yielded broad recognition in visible accolades such as his name on an elementary school, his name on a distinguished professorship at Metro State University and a tribute in the United States Congressional Record. Yet the more powerful feelings he generated in the community occurred when he took on grass-roots issues such as his leadership of the West Side Coalition that confronted the transformation of Auraria and the displaced Aurarians it left behind. It is this passion that will always mark the memory of a political leader that touched all of our lives. His commemoration is timely as the Latino community is looking to assess its present place in America and looks to those responsible for getting us here. The testimony of other important leaders at the reception and that also shared the stage with Rich in difficult as well as exciting moments reminds us of the passion that endures in our memory. 7 March 25, 2015 La Voz Bilingüe 7 LA VIDA LATINA LATINO CHICANO HISPANA A RTS ENTERTAI NMENT EDUCATION FASHION FILM TRAVEL Fighting cancer on four legs Veterinary Oncologists continue to battle cancer on behalf of four-legged friends Joshua Pilkington When Bridget Jermaine discovered that her collie, Gretchen had a malignant tumor in her right leg, she was both saddened and torn. The doctors told me that she basically had anywhere from three to six months to live unless we amputated her leg and even then that she live to be six wasn t a guarantee, Jermaine said of her then five-year-old friend. It hurt a lot because here I was looking at my best friend knowing she was going through a lot of pain, knowing she was going to have to go through a lot of pain and at the same time wondering how I was going to afford $2,500 in surgery and recovery costs. Jermaine s dilemma is not dissimilar from that of many other pet owners who have been forced to make the decision of treating their pet for cancer, even though recovery isn t guaranteed, or opting to euthanize their pet to avoid further pain and suffering. Fortunately for pet owners there have been numerous improvements in cancer research and treatment options for pets over the past decade, none of which are more prevalent than at the Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center. According to the FACC which specializes in oncology, once the diagnosis of cancer is reached an oncologist will recommend one treatment or a combination of treatments. The options are similar to treatment options for human patients such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Gretchen was only five and I didn t want to lose her, Jermaine said. Even though I had no idea how to pay for it, Photo courtesy: Denver Dumb Friends League Fortunately everything went over smoothly and now my four-legged friend is my three-legged friend, she said. Whether a patient s owner opts for surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, FACC has a fully staffed team of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists as well as technicians, veterinary nurses and residents. Unlike Jermaine, Heather Bouchard opted for chemotherapy four years ago when her cocker spaniel, Bruno, was diagnosed with lymphoma and given a short period of time to live. Unfortunately for Bouchard and Bruno, the cancer went into remission and gave Bruno another healthy year of life, before coming back with aggression. Cancer pretty common, especially in older dogs, said Elizabeth Martinez, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Just about 50 percent of dogs over the age of 10 develop cancer at some point, which can put an owner in a difficult place as far as treatment. Bruno was seven when initially diagnosed and passed away 13 months after his initial diagnosis. There wasn t much we could do the second time around, Bouchard said. The tumor spread so quickly, we just didn t have time to control it. He was suffering so much. We had to make a difficult decision, but I believe we made the right one. Saying goodbye is an important part of the treatment process as well, according to the FACC. Though there is no correct time to say goodbye, the FACC counsels that pet owners take into consideration the pet s quality of life, the cost of continued care, the time you must invest for continued care and the kind of life you want your pet to live. We took him to City Park on his last day, Bouchard said. It was always one of his favorite places to go and play around, even in the winter. He was in a lot of pain so it didn t last long, but he kept the same glimmer in his eye all the same. There are certain cost benefits available to pet owners for cancer treatment, the FACC has funds that offer financial assistance, consultant services and training for future veterinary oncologists. Uninsured Hispanics % Blacks - 19% Asians % Non-Hispanic White % Included in this is the fact that Immigration enforcement policies negatively affect the health of immigrant Hispanics. The health care challenges faced by Hispanics are first financial, second structural and third, personal barriers to health care. The financial challenge is inadequate health insurance due to low paying jobs and high rates of poverty. The structural is poor geographical access and lack of transportation to the health providers. The personal barriers include cultural and linguistic factors as well as discrimination and health provider s bias. The reasons include, fear and uncertainty about providing information to obtain Medicaid or to qualify for the Affordable Care Act. With this background data, how does this impact Hispanics with cancer? Oncology is the study and treatment of tumors or cancer, which is a malignant tumor that trends to spread to other parts of the body. Overall about 1 in 2 Hispanic men and 1 in 3 Hispanic women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Hispanic men dying from cancer is 1 in 5 and for Hispanic women it is 1 in 6. The American Cancer Society publication titled Cancers Facts and Figures for Hispanic/Latinos, communicated that in 2012 there were 53,600 new cancer cases in Hispanic men and 59,200 in Hispanic women. Squamous cell carcinoma, the second most serious form, is first noticed on areas of the body that have been exposed to sunlight for years, usually the head, neck and hands. For women, it is also seen on the lower legs. It can also appear on the lips, inside the mouth and, even the genitals. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. If detected early, the outcome is often successful. If it goes undiscovered or ignored it can spread to other body parts and is often fatal. We see it (skin cancer) with anyone who works outdoors postal workers, cops, farm workers, says Dr. Renee D Ambrosia, a dermatologist with Kaiser Permanent. The genesis of skin cancer, she says, is the sun and, more specifically, the sun s ultra violet rays. There are three types of UV rays: UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin. They cause skin wrinkling, premature aging and can cause skin cancer. The A in UVA stands for aging. UVB rays are stronger and are responsible for sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. These rays are stronger in summer months, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The B stands for burning. UVC is the strongest and most dangerous but is stopped by the earth s atmosphere. While there is no escaping the sun especially in a state like Colorado with 300 annual days of sunshine there is a way to minimize its potential for damage, or worse. For less than ten dollars you can buy an insurance policy doctors say actually works. It s called sunblock. It comes in lotion or spray. Just use it, says D Ambrosia. It should be at least an ounce for your whole body. An ounce is about the volume contained in a shot glass. D Ambrosia recommends using a product with an SPF factor of at least thirty but going higher is probably wiser. Using a sunblock, no matter its protection factor, does not automatically protect. It takes about twenty minutes from the time it s applied, says D Ambrosia. She also adds that because an infant s skin is so sensitive, be especially careful with their sun exposure. If you don t have sunblock use a diaper crème. It will work just as well because it contains zinc, the precursor preventative for sunblock. Additionally, dermatologists say you should take a good look at your body at least once a month and pay special attention to moles the darker spots on your skin. Incidentally, don t overlook so-called beauty marks. Despite their description, they re still moles. For parts of your body that you can t see fully, ask a friend or partner. Parents, say doctors, should also examine their children on a regular basis. And, for infants, be especially vigilant. Pay special attention to the borders on moles, their color and shape. If a mole has changed shape or grown, it needs to be looked at. Uniform brown is good, says D Ambrosia. If you see red, white or blue in a mole, those are concerning colors. Also, a mole larger than a pencil eraser should be checked. Being responsible about your skin does not mean avoiding the sun altogether. But any sunburn can be dangerous, especially for children. And, for Caucasians or lightercomplexioned Latinos it s especially important to be cautious about sunburns. Sunburns cannot only be painful. They can carry long-term threat. For fair-skinned women, five serious sunburns before age 20 increase the risk of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, by 80 percent, says CDC. Normal exposure to the sun is unavoidable. People, after all, have to live their lives. Being outside, especially in warmer months, is going to have some effect on skin color. But, doctors say, no one should ever make the effort to get darker. It may have an aesthetic appeal, but it is simply bad for your health. Tanning is the skin s reaction to the sun, says Denver dermatologist Dr. Robert Delavelle. Tanning, he says, should be minimized. Tanning beds, simply avoided. Last year House Bill 1054, which would have prohibited minors under 18 from tanning salons without a doctor s prescription, died in a Colorado Senate committee. We came close, says Delavelle who works closely with the American Cancer Society. The state s tanning industry had a lot to do with the bill s death. Unlike doctors, including D Ambrosia and Delavelle who are adamant that tanning is damaging, the industry says that it s actually healthy and can protect against sunburn. The industry promotes the aesthetics of its product and is doing its best to attract new business. It s providing incentives to new or repeat customers, including free lotions to accelerate or accentuate tans, two-for-one visit coupons and using social media to offer tanning specials. Tanning beds or sun lamps emit UVA rays, an average of percent radiation that the industry says increases the benefits of a tan. A Vanderbilt University study, however, calculated this exposure as dangerous, three times the UVA radiation given off by the sun. But, like so many others who know the risk of too much sun, Sophia Eva, owner of Denver s Unique Hair Salon, still plans on hitting the tanning booth before the warm weather is here to stay. I do it so I don t burn when I m out in the sun, says Eva who will hit the tanning salon once or twice this season. I don t think I ll get skin cancer because I m not out in the sun that much. But this allows me to look like I ve been in the sun. The sun is unavoidable and for the next six or seven months, it will be burning its brightest. That also means, we are all potentially running a daily risk of too much exposure to it.
