Several months ago, Bishop Murphy requested each parish to set aside one hour each month as a time to pray for peace in the world. We had our first holy hour for peace in June on the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Bishop Murphy has also requested that the faithful of the diocese pray the rosary once a week for peace in the world.

We have spent $149,685 on the windows, roof, exterior walls and the refinishing of the sanctuary furnishings. That leaves us with $241,535 to complete what remains to be done in the church and wing. We hope that the memorials that will be available for the wing will help us generate $50,000 that we can earmark for the church restoration. While a good number of the estimates have been submitted, there are still some that have to be attained before we make any final recommendations. We will meet again in September to continue our conversation. We are also in the process of obtaining estimates to replace the sidewalks along Cottonwood Road side of the church. THE CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL for 2015 is still underway in the diocese. Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the CMA. Dear Friends, COMMUNITY September is always a very busy month! Schools re-open after the summer vacation, businesses return to their normal schedule. It s also a busy time in the life of a parish. Faith Formation gets underway once again, parish committees, parish leadership, pastoral council start to meet once again. Pastoral care programs become busier as people get back into their routines. During the last two or three months we have been praying the Arise in Christ prayer together at Mass at the conclusion of the Universal Prayer. In the Arise in Christ prayer we pray these words: we believe that you are doing something new, calling us to arise together in Christ to celebrate

If you can join season one I encourage you to do so. I know that I intend to be a participant for each of the seasons. I truly believe that if you join one of the small faith sharing groups you will be incredibly blest and be very happy that you joined a small group. So start to pray about it this week so that when we come together next weekend you will be ready to sign up for Arise in Christ. A commentator on this week s readings writes: Today s first reading and gospel feature two figures who are willingly defined by their suffering, for it is through their suffering that they are able to show their true face to the world. Deutero-Isaiah never names the servant he has described in four poignant songs. However, the prophet has described in vivid details the suffering he endured for the sake of his ministry. In order to speak a word to rouse his contemporaries, he endured their rejection; to establish justice for the nations, he let himself be beaten and mocked. To be the light of the nations and the liberator of the prisoners, he accepted being spat upon. To bring healing and wholeness to the blind, to the deaf and the lame, he did not Pierre Teilhard de Chardin affirmed: that Christianity plays an irreplaceable role with its astonishing revelation that suffering, if rightly embraced, can be transformed into an expression of love and a principal of action. Suffering remains an adversary, yet at the same time, it can prove to be the disciples advocate, uprooting selfishness and enabling one to become completely centered in Christ as God. So this week let each of us prayerfully consider the words of Deutero-Isaiah and the words of Jesus about the mystery of suffering and its meaning in our lives. Let each of us with Peter make our profession of faith and listen to the Lord Jesus as he reveals to us what that profession of faith is truly about! And don t forget to think about joining a small faith sharing group for season one of Arise in Christ! Peace, Fr. 8 S e p t e m b e r 1 3, P a g e 6 YOUTH MINISTRY: One of the ongoing challenges for our parish is to provide ministry for our young people (teens and young adults). While we have had two youth ministers over the last two or three years the response has been less than overwhelming for many different reasons. Over the last few years Our Lady of Fatima parish has worked with St. Peter s and St. Aloysius to provide this important ministry to the teens of our parishes. Last year our Youth Minister resigned because of a much better job offer that she could not refuse. The year before the Youth Minister resigned and took a position at a Catholic High School as Campus Minister following the closing of St. Ignatius Retreat House, which was itself a part of the Youth Ministry programs for our three parishes. Continuity has been a challenge in recent years. Trying to discern what Youth Ministry might be like in the twenty first century is a challenge. The schedules of young people are incredibly full so the way Youth Ministry is done in any one parish has to be very creative and flexible using all the technological tools that are available to proclaim the Gospel message to our young people and engaging them in a ministry that is life-challenging and giving them an experience of a faith-filled community. Please keep Youth Ministry in your prayer in the coming weeks that, together with the other two parishes and the parents of young people and the young people themselves, we might be able to create and maintain a Youth Ministry that meets the needs of our three parishes. LAUDATO SI (Praise be to you Lord): This encyclical by Pope Francis has been the source of many conversations and comments both pro and con. If you would like to take a closer look at the encyclical you are welcome to come to a conversation on it that will be held in a few weeks. Copies of the encyclical are available. If you would be interested in joining a conversation on the encyclical please call the Parish Office at The dates will be on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 st, and again on SEPTEMBER 28 th, at 10:00 AM or 7:30 PM. St. Aidan Parish, Williston Park. Will begin a Study Program called The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters on September 22 nd for 7 weeks with 2 sessions, morning or evening. CaringHands Corner IT TAKES A COMMUNITY Andrew was 16 years old when he had his swimming accident. He and his parents were devastated when they were told he most likely would never walk again. Being a people of faith they turned to God and their church community. They reached out to the CaringHands prayer chain and so it began. Last week I informed you that our boy was walking at Christmas with the aid of crutches. In the beginning of August, CaringHands received an invitation which read as

9 S e p t e m b e r 1 3, P a g e 7 follows: The family invited us attend a MASS OF CELEBRATION in thankful support of Andrew. We Un Mensaje de could not have done it without you..! Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 3:00 PM; Church of St. Anne Garden City. Nuestro Párroco Afterwards, join us back at the house for a SUMMER AFTERNOON BARBECUE! Queridos Amigos, As we entered the Narthex of the very beautiful church, there standing at the top of the stairs stood Andrew tall and erect hugging everyone who approached, including us. When we mentioned we were from Our Lady of Fatima CaringHands he thanked us for the prayers, cards and especially for coming. At that moment, I think we all felt the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT and we were filled with joy. We met his parents and they too were so thrilled that four of us were able to make this wonderful faith filled celebration of LOVE. Over 200 people filled that church on that very hot summer afternoon. As Msgr. Harold pointed out in his inspiring homily, we were there because we cared. We knew the young man and his family needed our help in whatever capacity we were able to give. He called us GOOD SAMARITANS. Msgr. Harold told us that Andrew s faith had deepened and we received so much from him in return. The Barbecue was wonderful and the food was delicious. The day was perfect, but nothing could compare to the events that took place in the celebration of the Eucharist. Both Andrew and Robert (a thirteen year old boy who Andrew met and befriended in rehab) were anointed by Msgr. Harold during Mass. One never thinks of themselves as being a Good Samaritan. We just do what we do because we have been called by God and we hope and pray that if we ever need a community, one will be there for us. We the CaringHands Card Ministry will never forget this day and it was a privilege to be a part of it. Prayers are still needed for a full recovery as Andrew still needs some medical rehabilitation. As you think of this journey of faith please remember the rest of our sick and homebound. Remember it takes a community and we are community. God Bless our wonderful Fatima Family.
