1 Holy Cross Religious Education Centre 1846 Randall Avenue + Bronx, New York (718) X 170 DRE@holycrossbronx.org Overview of Religious Education Program Holy Cross parish offers a Religious Education Program for children and teens in grades 1 through 12 with the goal of engaging our children and youngsters in a lifelong faith formation and enrichment process as well as preparing them for the celebration of their sacraments. Parents are the first and primary teachers of their children in the practice of the faith. Our parish Religious Education Program endeavors to support the parents in that awesome responsibility. As part of our Religious Education Program we offer a Sacramental Preparation Component. In order for one to be accepted for the celebration of a particular sacrament, the child must complete a minimum of two consecutive years of catechesis. It is also expected that once a child has celebrated his/her First Holy Communion that he/she continue with their Religious Education Formation and attend class each year until the celebration of their Confirmation, which generally takes place in the 7 th grade. Following the celebration of their Confirmation, the parish of Holy Cross offers a Youth Group experience for the continuing formation of students. Reviso del Programa de Educación Religiosa La parroquia de Holy Cross ofrece un programa de Educación Religiosa para niños en los grados 1 hasta 12 con el recto de preparar los niños para que tengan una vida dedicada a su formación y enriquecer su fe. Además los preparamos para celebrar sus sacramentos. Los padres son los primeros y primarios maestros de sus hijos en la practica de la fe. El programa de nuestra parroquia trata de apoyar y ayudar los padres con esta gran responsabilidad. Como parte de nuestra programa de educación religiosa, ofrecemos la preparación para celebrar los sacramentos. Para ser aceptado para la celebración de los sacramentos el niño tiene que terminar por lo menos dos años consecutivo de clases. Se espera que cuando el niño ha celebrado el sacramento de la Primera Comunión que ellos continúen con su formación religiosa y asistan las clases cada año hasta que celebren su confirmación que se lleva a cabo en el séptimo grado. Favor de registrar a sus hijos cada año para las clases de religión.

2 Religious Education Program Policies and Guidelines The policies and guidelines of the Holy Cross Religious Education Program are outlined below. It is imperative that the forgoing is adhered to and parents as the first and foremost teachers of the practice of the faith to their children agree to the foregoing. Failure to comply with the program policies and guidelines may delay the celebration of the sacraments by your child. Parents must agree to their child s participation in Religious Education Classes and fulfill their responsibility for their child s Spiritual Growth by seeing that he/she attends and does well in class and attends Sunday Mass weekly. Parents and Students must attend the 12:30pm Family Mass and the ensuing Catechesis on the First Sunday s of the Month. They may attend any other Mass on the other weekends. Parents must agree to attend with their children all of the scheduled REQUIRED Meetings for the Religious Education Program including the Family Catechesis Sessions, Parents must understand that their child must complete 20 hours of Christian Service (Confirmation Preparation Students Only) Parents must understand that they together with their child must select a sponsor (for Confirmation Students) and/or godparents (for those students who need to be baptized) and that pursuant to Canon Law, the godparents and/or sponsors must be practicing Catholics who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and parents further understand that they must provide proof of Confirmation for the godparents and/or sponsors by way of a copy of their confirmation certificate and/or an authorization letter from the Catholic Church which she or he presently attends. Parents must understand that if their child will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation this year that he/she must attend a one day Confirmation Retreat and authorize and grant permission for their child to do so. First Holy Communion Students will also take part in a First Holy Communion Retreat. Parents must understand that failure on their part or on the part of their child to adhere to these program requirements may preclude or delay their child from celebrating the Sacraments as scheduled. AS PREVIOUSLY NOTED, ALL FAMILIES MUST ATEND 2 MANDATORY FAMILY CATECHESIS SESSIONS AS CALLED FOR BY TIMOTHY Cardinal DOLAN. Estos patrones o Padrinos por la ley canónica deben haber celebrado el Sacramento de Confirmación y necesitan prueba de Confirmación y una carta de la Iglesia Católica donde comulgan dándole permiso para ser patrón o padrinos. Los padres tienen que entender que los estudiantes preparándose para celebrar el sacramento de Confirmación tiene que asistir un día entero de retiro le doy permiso para asistir el retiro Los padres tienen que entender que si fallan los requisitos del programa, la celebración de los sacramentos se puede delatar. 3 For the Sacrament of Confirmation SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATION GUIDELINES: DRESS CODE: NO JEANS OR SNEAKERS MAY BE WORN ALL BOYS SHOULD WEAR A SHIRT AND TIE. THE BOYS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM SHOULD WEAR A JACKET AS WELL. The grade school boys will wear a Red Robe while the High School Boys will wear a stole over their shoulders. Boys may wear a boutonniere as well. THE GIRLS SHOULD WEAR A DRESS OR A SKIRT OR DRESS SLACKS WITH OBVIOUSLY A BLOUSE. The grade school girls will wear a White Robe while the High School girls will wear a stole. Girls may wear corsages as well. For the Sacrament of First Holy Communion DRESS CODE FOR FIRST COMMUNION Boys may wear any color suit but must also wear a WHITE TIE and a white arm band which is placed on the left arm Girls should wear a white dress and veil. All material is provided as part of the Sacramental. This includes a First Communion Book, Rosary Beads, etc. There is no reserved seating in the church except for faculty and staff, so please arrive with sufficient time so as to secure your desired seats. PLEASE DO NOT SAVE SEATS FOR ANYONE. Our Ministers of Hospitality will make every effort to seat everyone in all available seats. VIDEO AND PICTURE TAKING POLICY (For both Confirmation and First Communion Celebrations) VIDEO AND PICTURE TAKING: We respectfully request that the policies regarding photography and video be observed. Our Ministers of Hospitality will be on hand to ensure compliance. Please respect their directives. Weather permitting, we will leave from the lower church and proceed into the church and walk down the main aisle of the church. We will proceed slowly for good exterior and picture taking. Video and picture taking permitted, without lights or flash, ONLY FROM ONE S PLACE IN THE PEW DURING THE ENTRANCE PROCESSION and FROM ONE S PEW DURING THE EXIT PROCESSION. NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEO WILL BE PERMITTED DURING THE CONFIRMATION OR FIRST COMMUNION MASSES. THE BISHOP (for Confirmation), PRIESTS, DEACONS AND TEACHERS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PHOTOS AFTER THE MASS FOR PHOTOS. A Professional Photographer will be on-site for to take individual photos for a fee and will be taking photos of the children as they celebrate the sacraments. PLEASE NO PHOTOS DURING THE MASSES.

Las damas usaran un traje blanco y un velo. Les daremos la corbata, banda de brazos, velos, cartera, rosario y libro de oraciones como parte del paquete sacramental. FOTOS Y VIDEO (Para Ambos Confirmación y Primera Comunión) Pedimos que respecten las políticas sobre tomar fotos y video sobre las celebraciones de la primera comunión y confirmación. Tendremos ministros de hospitalidad para asegurar cumplimiento con los directivos. Favor de hacerles caso. Si el tiempo estas disponibles, los niños saldrán del sótano de la iglesia y saldrán afuera para poder entrar a la iglesia por las puertas afrente y seguir el camino por pasillo central. Caminaremos despacio para tomar fotos de su asiento solamente. Se puede tomar fotos solamente durante la entrada y salida. NO SE PERMITE TOMAR FOTOS NI VIDEOS DURANTE LA MISA. Después de la misa, el obispo, sacerdotes, diáconos y maestros estarán disponibles para tomar todas las fotos que desean. Tendremos un fotógrafo profesional para tomar fotos cuando celebran los sacramentos sus hijos. Pueden comprar estas fotos. 5 Baptismal/Confirmation Guidelines/Guía de Bautismos/Confirmación Children over the age of five must complete one year of Religious Education before they can be baptized. The baptisms take place during their second year of study generally during the month of January and on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Second Sunday). In an effort to save on some of the expenses associated with the sacramental celebrations, it is recommended that the girls use the same white dress they will use for their First Holy Communion. Boys may wear whatever suit they will use for First Holy Communion. It does not have to be white. Baptism is a sacrament deeply concerned with faith, the faith of the community and the faith of the individual. The sacrament of baptism may become meaningless with out a response of faith. Faith demands a commitment to Jesus and to the Christian message. Baptism is not a ritual to go through in order to be saved, it is a lifestyle to be lived. GODPARENTS: According to Canon Law, the law governing the Catholic Church, a godparent for a Catholic Baptism must be fully initiated practicing Catholic. Non-Catholics may not serve as godparents for a Catholic Baptism. At least one godparent is required; no more than two (one male and one female) are allowed The godparent needs to be a practicing Catholic who is at least (16) years of age The godparent must be fully initiated in the Catholic Church, that is, they must have received the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. Regular attendance at Mass is expected. Regular participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is encouraged. If married, the godparent needs to be in a marriage considered valid in the Catholic Church. In order to prepare for the celebration of this sacrament, the parents and godparents must attend a Baptismal Catechetical Class the date and time of which is indicated on your Religious Education Calendar. Se requiere por lo menos un padrino pero no más de dos (un hombre y una mujer) Los padrinos tienen que ser personas que practican la fe y tienen por lo menos 16 años Los padrinos tienen que haber sido iniciado totalmente en la iglesia católica y deben haber celebrado los sacramentos del Bautismo, Primera Comunión y Confirmación. 6 Confirmation Christian Service Statement GUIDELINES: Each Candidate for Confirmation is required to perform 20 hours of Christian Service. This service is non-paid Community Service to help aid others. It is something that all Catholics are called to do. This service may be performed at any location however, the person supervising the service hours must attest by signing the Christian Service Log that the Candidate has performed the Christian Service hours stated therein. The hope and goal of this project is to introduce the notion of Christian service and to inculcate in them a servant heart performing the work that Jesus commands us to do. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE YOUR SERVICE HOURS THE CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION MAY BE DELAYED. YOU SHOULD DISCUSS ANY CONCERNS WITH DEACON BELLO.
