3 Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart Asesor Científico, La Habana, Cuba Scientific Advisor, Havana, Cuba Síntesis Biográfica He graduated as MSc. with (Hon) in Nuclear Physics, from Moscow, M. V. Lomonosov State University (1974). In the seventies and early eighties in Russia, he carried out researches in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, and earned his PhD in Physical-Mathematical Sciences in the I. V. Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute and made a Post Doctoral Research in Theoretical Physics. In the year 2000, he obtained a Doctor of Sciences degree (DSc). He also holds two MSc. degrees in Strategic Planning and Higher Management, and Project Management from international academic institutions. Prof. Castro has written 10 books, and over 150 scientific publications, mostly in his fields of interest. He is member among others of the Cuban Academy of Sciences; The Cuban Society of Physics; and the Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society from the USA. In several occasions, has been awarded nationally and internationally, among them are: In 2001, was awarded with the First Prize of the XIII National Forum on Science and Technology Awards; in 2005, with highest National State recognition for Science and Technology achievements the Carlos J. Finlay Medal, and in 2007, with Professor Emeritus honour of the University of Kyoto, Japan. Castro Díaz- Balart has held the following positions in Cuba ( ): as Executive Secretary of the Governmental Body; Executive Secretariat of Nuclear Matters; from ( ), Chief of scientific and technological activities in the Ministry of Basic Industry; and from 2003 to the present, Scientific Advisor to the President of the State Council, Republic of Cuba. 1

4 Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart El gran desafío de lo pequeño: Estrategia cubana de nanotecnología The big challenge of the small: Cuban strategy on Nanotechnology El desarrollo económico actual transita, por el desenvolvimiento del saber y la inteligencia que atesora la nación, por lo que centra su atención en las ciencias modernas, las nuevas tecnologías, los procesos educativos y de formación de recursos humanos de excelencia, que le sirven de sostén. Un lugar central le corresponde a la creación de capacidades para la investigación básica, aplicada, y la asimilación de las tecnologías habilitantes, que serán cruciales para el desarrollo de la sociedad. La creación del nuevo Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Cuba (CEAC), dedicado principalmente a las Nanociencias y las Nanotecnologías, constituye un hito en esta dirección. Su objetivo central es potenciar la integración nacional mediante sinergias coherentes, y la creación de la plataforma experimental requerida para adentrarse en el conocimiento existente en este campo. En la conferencia, se ofrece el estado actual y una visión de futuro de este importante proyecto, que implica un gran reto, no sólo porque se refiere a la comprensión y manipulación de la materia en la escala nanométrica, sino por lo que implica para un país pequeño, la envergadura de los trabajos de diseño, organizativos, de infraestructura ingeniera y científico técnico implicados, en la aspiración de convertirse en referencia de la región, realizando investigación de nivel internacional en este complejo y demandante campo. The current economic development is linked to the performances of knowledge and the intelligence apprehended by the nation; this is the reason why it focuses its attention on modern sciences, the novel technologies, the educative process, and the formation human resources of excellence, which support it. The facilities for basic and applied research, and integration of the existing enabling technologies, are essential for the society development. The creation of a new Center for Advanced Studies of Cuba (CEAC), mainly devoted to the nanosciences and nanotechnologies, is a landmark in that direction. Its main goal is to enhance the national integration through coherent synergies, and the creation of the required experimental platform to move forward the understanding existing in this field. In the conference, are presented the current situation and a future vision of the important project, which is a big challenge, not only because it refers to understanding and manipulation of the matter at nanometric scale; also due to all the implications that bring for a small country such huge design, infrastructure engineering, and technical- scientific works, involved in the aspiration to become reference in our region, conducting world class research in this demanding and complex field. 2

5 David Payne Director del Centro de Optoelectrónica de la Universidad de Southampton, Reino Unido Director of the Optoelectronic Center, University of Southampton, Great Britain Síntesis Biográfica Prof. Payne, CBE, FRS, FREng, FIEE, FOSA es director del Centro de investigaciones Optoelectrónica de la Universidad de Southampton, uno de los laboratorios de investigación de fotónica más reconocidos del mundo. Además es Director y Fundador de SPI Laser Ltd. Guió el equipo que inventó el láser fibra óptica y el amplificador de fibra dopado con Erbium y ha hecho otros avances escenciales en la comunicaciones de fibra óptica en losúltimos 40 años. Su carrera siempre se ha extendido tanto en la parte científica como comercial. El profesor Payne es invitado con frecuencia como conferencista invitado en las más importantes conferencias internacionales, especialmente en los Estados Unidos y Japón. Ha recibido la Condecoración John Tyndall (USA), el Rank Prize para la Óptica, el Premio para la Computación y las Comunicaciones de Japón, la prestigiosa Medalla Bejamin Franklin (USA), el Premio de Investigación Básica otorgado por la Fundación Eduard Rhein, y la Medalla Mountbatten de la IEE. Por su especial contribución a la ciencia y la ingeniería, en el 2004 fue condecorado con la Medalla Kelvin otorgada por las Sociedades combinadas del Reino Unido. En el 2007 recibió el Premio de Fotónica IEEE por sus logros extraordinarios en esee campo y en el 2008 se convirtió en Laureado del Milenio y en Malconi Fellow. 3

6 David Payne De las telecomunicaciones y los sensores ópticos a la nanofotónica y los materiales ópticos From telecommunications and optical sensors to nanophotonics and optical materials El gran éxito de de las fibras ópticas y circuitos planares en las telecomunicaciones ha generado numerosas aplicaciones en diferentes campos relacionados como en la bio- y nanofotónica y los láseres de alta potencia. El control casi total de la amplitud, frecuencia, y las fases de la luz siguen siendo avances en el uso de la fotónica en la metrología, en la industria y la defensa. Estos mercados se están beneficiando grandemente de la naturaleza confiable de las telecomunicaciones a través de la innovación ingenieríl y de las extensas pruebas antes de la salida del producto. La charla resumirá los desarrollos de los componentes ó p t i c o s, i n c l u y e n d o l a s f i b r a s n a n o - y microestruturadas, cristales altamente no lineales, de núcleo extenso, fibras resistentes a daños para láseres kw. Además explorará prospectos para la construcción de nuevas tecnologías y aplicaciones mediante el aprovechamiento de las propiedades los nuevos materiales y estructuras ópticos. The great success of optical fibres and planar circuits in telecommunications has generated numerous applications in a number of related fields, such as sensing, bio- and nano-photonics and high-power lasers. The almost total control of light amplitude, frequency and phase continues to make inroads into the use of photonics in metrology, manufacturing and defence. These markets are benefiting immeasurably from the telecommunications reliability culture through innovative engineering and extensive pre-release testing. The talk will review optical component developments across a number of areas, with particular emphasis on recent innovations, including nano and microstructured fibres, highly non-linear glasses and largecore, damage resistant fibres for kw lasers. It will also explore prospects for building new technologies and applications through harnessing the properties of new optical materials and structures. 4

Pitarque Nanociencia en el País Vasco: el Proyecto NanoGune Nanoscience in the nanogune project Basque Country El departamento de Industria, Comercio y Turismo del gobierno Vasco ha introducido la estrategia llamada nanobask2015 diseñada para el desarrollo de un nuevo sector industrial en el País Vasco que será posible gracias a la nanotecnología. En el marco de esta iniciativa y del programa Consolidador se ha creado un nuevo Centro de I&D (el Centro de Investigación Cooperativo de Nanociencia) con el objetivo de cubrir las investigaciones de clase mundial nanociencias básicas y aplicadas para el crecimiento competitivo del País Vasco. En la conferencia pretendo hacer un resumen del estado actual de este proyecto desafiante, al que llamo el gran desafío de lo pequeño no solo porque se refiere a la ciencia de lo pequeño sino porque representa un desafío para un país pequeño pero exitoso que actualmente pretende convertirse en referencia en el tema de innovación en Europa. The Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism of the Basque Government has recently launched a so-called nanobask2015 strategy designed for the development of a new industrial sector in the Basque Country that would be enabled by nanotechnology. In the framework of this initiative and the Spanish Consolider-Ingenio program, a new R&D Center (the Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center nanogune) has been created with the mission of addressing both basic and applied nanoscience world-class research for the competitive growth of the Basque Country. In this talk, I intend to give an overview of the current status of this challenging project, which we call the big challenge of the small not only because it refers to the science of the small but also because it represents a big challenge for a small but successful country that is currently aiming at becoming an innovation reference in Europe. 6

Kashkarov Programa de Educación: Física de los Nanosistemas en la Universidad Lomonosov Education program: Physics in nanosystems at MGU Lomonosov Hace algunos años la NANOTECNOLOGÍA empezó a llamar la atención en diversos campos; generalmente, como símbolo y contenido de una etapa posterior de la miniaturización electrónica. Según las definiciones existentes, se caracterizaba la nanotecnología, desde el punto de vista de las dimensiones, como la operación de objetos de 100 a 0,1nm. Una noción más exacta sobre la nanotecnología se presentó al suponer los métodos de fabricación de un producto final con ciertos átomos- (nano) estructura a través de la manipulación de átomos y moleculas. Las mayores interrogantes, se resolvieron al tenerse una mejor comprensión del nanometro, de la experiencia de manipular nanobjetos y de diseñar nanoestructuras, hechos que condujeron a la formación de una nuevo tipo de tecnología universal de un control completo de la substancia. Como muchos predijeron, conocer el desarrollo de la nanotecnología determinará las perspectivas del siglo XXI, y la dirección del futuro desarrollo de la civilización en la tierra. De mayor prioridad para Rusia debe ser la formación de científicos nuevos y mejores preparados que los existentes, sobre la base de la investigación científica, los posibles resultados y del desarrollo de la nanotecnología, así como la extensión de la frontera del conocimiento y su intensidad, a partir de la preparación de estas potencias jóvenes. En este primer programa se detalla profundamente el contenido de los cursos de estudio de la física de los nanosistemas. Los capítulos del programa están preparados por destacados profesores y conferencistas de la MGU Lomonosov de la alta escuela de Moscú, así como colaboradores del Instituto Kurchatov. El programa fue aprobado exitosamente por las cátedras de física general y de nanosistemas,y de electrónica molecular de la facultad física de la MGU Lomonosov; además fue ratificado por la Universidad de Moscú y registrado como método educativo de educación y la Federación Rusa. As many forecast, namely development of nanotechnology will determine the outlook of XXI eyelid and the directions of the further development of civilization on Earth. Formation new, even more perspective specialists than existing one, for development nanotechnology will be possibly only as a result of scientific search. The extensions of the front Knowledge and their intensity, at expense the preparation of young brainpower, should be of principal composing struggle for the priority of Russia in the field nanotechnology In this first program is led the detailed and deeply contents of training courses in the direction Physics nanosystems. The chapters of program are prepared by leading professors and senior lecturers MGU Lomonosov, of other HIGHER SCHOOLS of Moscow, as well as by collaborators of Kurchatov Institute. 12 Masahiko Hara Estudios SPM de monocapas autoensambladas, detección y reconocimiento moleculares SPM Studies of Self-Assembled Monolayers, Single Molecular Detection, and Molecular Recognitions La toma de imagen a escala molecular de las monocapas autoensambladas (SAMs) y detección de respuesta molecular de las moléculas de proteína se ralizan con la microscopía de efecto tunel (STM) y de fuerza atómica (AFM). El crecimiento espontáneo de las SAMs en sustratos sólidos se visualiza a través de un STM, y se muestra por primera vez sobre una nueva fase final y las inestabilidades correspondientes. Se examinan con AFM los procesos de despliegue y repliegue de moléculas de proteínas individuales y los reconocimientos moleculares. Además, el AFM revela que los pequeños cambios en los residuos de los aminoácidos en las puntas de las sequencias en una molécula de proteína tiene un gran efecto para la fuerzas de adhesión contra los substratos seleccionados. Los detalles se explicarán y discutirán en el seminario. Molecular scale imaging of self assembled monolayers (SAMs) and single molecular response detections of protein molecules are carried out using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Spontaneous growth processes of SAMs on solid substrates are imaged by STM, and a new final phase and the instabilities are reported for the first time Unfolding and refolding processes of single protein molecules and molecular recognitions are examined precisely by AFM. Furthermore, AFM reveals that small changes in amino acid residues in the end of the sequences in one protein molecule make a big effect for the adhesion forces against target substrates. The details will be explained and discussed in the seminar. 10

13 Wang Enge Vicesecretario General, Academia de Ciencias China, Beijing, República Popular China Deputy Secretary General, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Síntesis Biográfica Wang's research focuses on surface physics; the approach is a combination of atomistic simulation of nonequilibrium growth, chemical vapor deposition of light-element nanomaterials, and water behaviors in confinement system. One of the original contributions is the development of the Reaction-Limited- Aggregation (RLA) theory. Within this model, a fractal-to-compact island shape transition can be induced by either decreasing the growth temperature or increasing the deposition flux. This counterintuitive finding is just the opposite to the prediction of the classic Diffusion-Limited-Aggregation (DLA) model, and is in excellent qualitative agreement with experimental observations in the presence of surfactant. He and his coworkers also predicted a threedimensional Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier; attracted News and Views in Nature (June 2002). Another contribution is the model proposal and experimental validation of a true upward atomic diffusion; attracted Physics News Update in June 2003 and News and Views in Nature as well as Science Week in June His group experimentally realized tubular graphite cone and polymerized CN nanobells; attracted News reports of Materialstoday (June 2003) and Analytical Chemistry (July 2003). He also developed a method to synthesize single-walled boron-carbon-nitrogen nanotubes. Recently, he researches water behaviors in confinement. He proposed a two-dimensional tessellation ice, which has attracted a lot of interest and has finally been observed in experiments. His work on the water-surface coupling and the strength of the hydrogen bonds at the interfaces provides a fundamental understanding of water on surface at molecular level. 11

14 Wang Enge Conversión de nanotubos de carbono metálicos de paredes sencillas en semiconductores a través de incrustaciones de Boro Nitrógeno Converting Metallic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes into Semiconductors via Boron-Nitrogen co-doping Como miembro de los elementos ligeros materiales nanotubulares, los nanotubos ternarios BCN son interesantes porque sus propiedades son mucho menos dependientes de la geometría de nanotubo. En esta conferencia, presentaré la síntesis directa del nanotubo de capa simple Bx Cy Nz (BCN- SWNTs) a través del método de deposición química a vapor asistida por filamento caliente. Los microscopios convenciones de emisión de campo y los de alta resolución de transmisión de electrones de energía filtrada muestran que la Bx Cy Nz (BCN- SWNTs) obtenida muestra una estructura cilíndrica recta de forma similar a los SWNTs de carbono puro y los elementos constituyentes B, C y N distribuidos homogéneamente dentro las paredes del tubo. La espectroscopía photoelectrónica de rayos X revela además la naturaleza de enlaces ternatios. Transcistores de efecto de campo hechos a partir de Bx Cy Nz (BCN- SWNTs se han usado para la el estudio de las propiedades de transporte eléctrico [2]. Más del 97 % de los Bx Cy Nz (BCN- SWNTs de más de 200 muestra son semiconductoras. Además, el ratio actual de encendido y apagado (Ion/Ioff) de los transcistores BCN-SWNT de efecto de campo alcanzan hasta 106. Al compararlos con la propiedad electrónica del carbono puro SWNTs obtenido de la misma muestra, nuestros resultados actuales del experimento indican que introducir in situ B y N en CVD el crecimiento de nanotubos de carbono es una ruta viable para alterar de manera selectiva las propiedades electrónicas, lo que da esperanza al principal problema de la importancia tecnológica potencial. As a member of light-element nanotubular materials, the ternary BCN nanotubes are attractive in that their properties are much less dependent on nanotube geometry. In this talk, I will report the direct synthesis of single-walled BCN nanotubes (BxCyNz-SWNTs) by biasassisted hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The field emission conventional and energy-filtered high-resolution transmission electron microscopes have shown that the obtained BxCyNz-SWNTs exhibit straight cylindrical structure in a similar way to pure carbon SWNTs, and the constituting B, C, and N elements are homogenously distributed within the tube walls. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy also reveals the ternary bonding nature. Field effect transistors made of the as-grown BxCyNz-SWNTs have been used to study the electrical transport properties. More than 97% of the BxCyNz-SWNTs from over 200 samples are semiconducting. In addition, the on-and-off current ratio (Ion/Ioff) of the BCN-SWNT field effect transistors reaches up to 106. By compared with the electronic property of pure carbon SWNTs obtained by the same set-up, our present experimental results indicate that in situ introducing B and N in CVD growth of carbon nanotubes is a viable route for selectively altering the electronic properties, which shed light on the key issue of potential technological importance. 12

16 Jean Rene Regnard Programa HERCULES y sus perspectivas: educación superior en el campo de la radiación del sincrotrón y los neutrones The Hercules Program as formation of humans resource HERCULES es en la actualidad el líder mundial en la enseñanza de las aplicaciones de neutrones y de las radiaciones de sincrotrón y ha servido de modelo a las escuelas europeas con sede en Grenoble (ERCA, ESONN ), y al resto del mundo. El programa HERCULES es organizado en conjunto con las dos universidades científicas de de Grenoble (UJF y INPG) con la ayuda y el apoyo de los socios de las grandes instalaciones (ESRF, SOLEIL, ILL, LLB). Los objetivos del programa HERCULES son: Entrenar científicos jóvenes europeos (estudiantes de doctorados, y postdoctorados) para usar los instrumentos del estado del arte en el presente y futuro en las grandes instalaciones (LI) de emisión de neutrones (n) y de radiación sincrotronica (SR). Atraer y desarrollar una comunidad de científicos jóvenes europeos cerca de las grandes instalaciones de neutrones y SR: Red de participantes HERCULES. Desde 1991, las sesiones anuales de HERCULES ha ofrecido entrenamiento básico teórico y experimental para una audiencia multidisciplinaria compuesta de jóvenes biólogos, químicos, físicos, geocientíficos, científicos industriales, organizados en su mayoría en los sitios científicos donde se ubican las dos LI europeas (ESRF y ILL). La originalidad de la gran diferencia entre las sesiones anuales HERCULES y la mayoría de los otros cursos, es el énfasis puesto en los cursos de entrenamiento (en grupos de 4 participantes) incluidos en el programa, dando resultado en más de una semana de práctica con una en cuatro n y SR LI por participantes. En el presente 1500 científicos jóvenes de todo el mundo han recibido estudios en este campo. Parte de nuestro programa está dedicado a las nanociencias y las nanotecnologías que representan un tema científico de importancia para el desarrollo de todas las instalaciones de sincrotrones de radiación modernos. HERCULES is presently the world leader in the teaching of applications of neutron and synchrotron radiation and has served as a model for other European schools based at Grenoble (ERCA, ESONN ) and in the rest of the world.the HERCULES programme is co organized by the two Grenoble scientific Universities (UJF and INPG) with the help and support of partner Large Installations (ESRF, SOLEIL, ILL, LLB,). The objectives of the HERCULES programme are: To train young European researchers to optimally use the state-of-art instruments at the present and future Large Installations (LI) delivering neutrons or synchrotron radiation. To attract and develop a community of young European scientists around the Large Installations of neutrons and SR: HERCULES participants network. Since its inception in 1991, the HERCULES annual sessions (HAS) have offered basic theoretical and experimental training for a multidisciplinary audience composed of young scientists, organised in the most part at the scientific site where two European LI (ESRF and ILL) are located. The HERCULES programme is composed by two different kind of practical courses: the basic five week course named HERCULES Annual Session and the newly operating (since 2006) one week HERCULES Specialized Courses. The originality and the major difference between the HERCULES annual sessions and most of other courses, is the emphasis given to experimental training (by group of 4 participants) included in the programme, resulting in more than one week of practicals with beam in four n. and S.R. L.I. per participant. At present 1500 young scientists from all over the world have been highly educated in this relevant field. Part of our programme is devoted to nanosciences and nanotechnologies which represent a major scientific theme for the development of all modern synchrotron radiation facilities. 14

17 Tony Cass Vicedirector del Imperial College de Londres, Reino Unido Deputy Director Imperial College London, England Síntesis Biográfica Tony Cass is currently Professor of Chemical Biology, Deputy Director and Research Director for Bionanotechnology in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He trained originally as a chemist with degrees from the Universities of York and Oxford. Tony's research interests are in the field of analytical biotechnology and particularly in the use of protein engineering and design to produce new reagents for biosensors and bioanalysis and their interfacing to Microsystems and nanomaterials. Tony was awarded Royal Society's Mullard Medal (along with Professor HAO Hill FRS and Dr MJ Green) for his work on glucose sensing. In addition to his academic research, Tony is a past member of several Research Council Committees, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Oxford Biosensors and a Board Member of BNC Ltd and acts as a consultant to several European and US biotechnology companies. He has published over 80 papers and edited 3 books and is on the editorial boards of Biosensors and Bioelectronics and IEE Proceedings Nanobiotechnology. Se destaca la importancia de la estandarización, la miniaturización, la aceptabilidad, la receptividad, lo oportuno en la medicina, el incremento de los costos de la salud, las terapias dirigidas, las técnicas de Nanoescala para los análisis de ADN, y los avances en las bionanotecnologías y en las nanomedicina. Se hace hincapié en que los impulsores de la bionanotecnología son el trabajo de interrelación disciplinaria, el compromiso con la biología/ la ingeniería/ las ciencias físicas, la disponibilidad de fondos, el deseo de crear nuevos valores (propiedad intelectual IP-, servicios y productos), la demanda inestable de la asistencia médica. Además en que la biomedicina actual está bien desarrollada en la escala macro (i.e. cirugía) y en la molecular (i.e farmacológica). Se cubre el papel del cada vez más creciente campo de la bionanomedicina en los avances de la nanomedicina y los modelos de tratamiento del siglo XXI como en la personalización, la identificación temprana, incluyendo las tendencias, monitoreo autónomo y las estrategias de regeneración. In the lecture a systematic review of bionanotechnology is presented. It is highlighted the importance of standardization, miniaturization, acceptability, responsiveness, timeliness of the medicine, increasing healthcare costs, personalizing therapies, Nanoscale techniques for DNA analysis, and advances in bionanotechnology and nanomedicine. It is claimed that the excitement of working at disciplinary interfaces, engagement of biology/engineering/physical sciences, available funding, desire to generate new values (intellectual property (IP), services and products), and insatiable demand for healthcare are the drivers of bionanotechnology. It also highlighted that current biomedicine is well developed at the macro (i.e. surgery) and molecular (i.e. pharmacological) scales. It is covered the role of the rapidly growing field of bionanotechnology in the advancement of nanomedicine and in the treatment models of the 21st century, such as more personalization, earlier identification, including propensities, autonomous monitoring, and regenerative strategies. 16

Therefore it is necessary to develop a clear vision and to create an environment that nurtures the business and growth of the defined target clients. The ability to assess the performance and the economic impact of the entrepreneurial ideas is as important as the managerial support for young businesses. Especially in a sector where innovations are implemented within a period of more than one decade and where huge financial investments are necessary. Es Profesor de Investigación del CSIC desde De a 2007 ha dirigido el Grupo de Biosensores del Instituto de Microelectrónica de Madrid (Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica, CNM) del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). Desde enero de 2008 dirige el Grupo de Nanobiosensores y Nanobiofisica Molecular en el recientemente creado Centro de Investigación en Nanociencia y Nanotecnología (CIN2) en Barcelona (centro mixto CSIC-y el Instituto Catalán de Nanotecnología) cuyas líneas de investigación se centran en el desarrollo de dispositivos micro/nanobiosensores para aplicación en el diagnóstico clínico precoz, el control medioambiental in situ, la defensa ciudadana, la genómica y la proteómica. y contratos con empresas de los cuales ha dirigido 22 y ha sido Coordinadora de un Proyecto europeo de gran éxito. Nuevos diagnósticos en la Nanoescala de mayor capacidad que los existentes actualmente, están siendo implementados con un rendimiento, que ofrecerá una calidad de vida más elevada para los ciudadanos, cambiando la atención sanitaria de una manera fundamental. La Nanomedicina es definida como la aplicación de la Nanotecnologías con el fin de obtener progresos en la atención sanitaria. Esta explota las nuevas y mejoradas propiedades físicas, químicas y biológicas de los materiales en la escala nanométrica. La Nanomedicina tiene el potencial para permitir la detección temprana y la prevención oportuna, mejorando esencialmente el diagnostico y tratamiento de las enfermedades. Algunos interesantes desarrollos del biosensensado basado en Nanotecnologías han aparecido durante los últimos años en la literatura científica, sensores tales como el uso de nanopartículas semiconductoras, metálicas o magnéticas y de resonancia de plasmones de superficie (LSPR). Así como diferentes clases de biosensores de nanotubos de carbono, sondas encapsuladas por materiales biológicamente compatibles y muchos otros tipos de nanosensores aparecen ya reportados. Sin embargo, la real implementación de la mayoría de estos biosensores aún está en su infancia y se dificulta actualmente por muchos factores. Primero, la mayoría de ellos aún requiere el uso de marcadores para la lectura la interacción biomolecular, los cuales no son beneficiosos para aplicaciones reales (donde una interpretación directa sería mucho más precisa). Segundo, el camino de conectar tales nanos - desarrollos a la operación en el ambiente del mundo real no se ha logrado aún prácticamente y se requieren configuraciones de laboratorio complejas y grandes para la adquisición de las señales y su procesamiento. Nanomedicine is defined as the application of nanotechnology to achieve breakthroughs in healthcare. It exploits the improved and often novel physical, chemical and biological properties of materials at the nanometer scale. Nanomedicine has the potential to enable early detection and prevention, and to essentially improve diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diseases. The early detection of diseases as cancer, the personalised treatments and the precise disease post-evolution recording will be possible, in the coming years, due to the application of nanomedicine tools under development. Nanomedicine is usually divided in three main areas: Nanodiagnostics (in-vitro and in-vivo) Drug delivery and Regenerative medicine. Nowadays, most tests for disease detection are based on time-consuming, expensive and sophisticated techniques which can only be utilized by specialised technicians in laboratory clinical environments. Such tests usually require sampling and labelling with fluorescent or radioactive labels. For this reason, there is an increasing interest in developing devices based on nanotechnology concepts which can detect, in a fast and selective way, any type of substance at very low concentrations picomolar to femtomolar and ideally at the single-molecule level. These technologies are already allowing both the miniaturization of biosensor devices and the increase in the sensitivity of the assays. We are witnessing the birth of new biosensor devices at the nanoscale which could be easily integrated in portable lab-on-chip platforms to perform point-of-care analysis. In the future they could even be working inside the human body to detect, at the very early stages, the presence of cancer cells or infectious agents. 20

24 Nora Ventosa Procesos basados en la compresión de fluidos para la preparación de materiales micro-y nanoparticulados con potencial para la aplicación de medicamentos Compressed fluid based processes for the preparation of micro- and nanoparticulate materials with potential application in drug-delivery La obtención de nuevos materiales moleculares microy nanoestructurados, y la comprensión de cómo manipular los materiales ya existentes a nivel nanoscópico, están desempeñando un papel importante en la liberación contornada de medicamentos. En este contexto, se ha observado avances en la preparación de materiales, con propiedades excepcionales derivado de las estructuras nanoscópicas, tales como nanosuspensiones, vesículas, compuestos nanoparticulados, etc., pueden contribuir de manera significativa en la reducción de la toxicidad de los medicamentos, aumenta su absorción y mejora su perfil de liberación. Sin embargo, es necesario el desarrollo de tecnologías eficientes y medioambientales para la fabricación a escala industrial de estos materiales nanoestructurados, con el objetivo de explotar comercialmente el gran potencial de estas nanomedicinas. Presentaré algunos de los desarrollos llevados a cabo en nuestro laboratorio, que se esfuerza por mostrar la eficiencia del procesamiento de materiales con fluidos comprimidos para la preparación sencilla de materiales micro- y nanoparticulados con aplicaciones en la liberación de medicamentos. En estos procedimientos, no se usan solventes orgánicos dañinos, por el contrario se usan fluidos comprimidos ecológicos como medios solventes; lo que permite la preparación de materiales con características físico- químicas inalcanzables mediante los procedimientos convencionales realizados en medios líquidos convencionales. The obtaining of new micro- and nanostructured molecular materials, and the understanding of how to manipulate existing materials at nanoscopic level, are playing a crucial role in drug delivery.1 In this context it has been observed that advances in the preparation of materials, with exceptional properties derived from its nanoscopic structure, such as nanosuspensions, vesicles, nanoparticulate composites, etc., can significantly contribute to reducing the toxicity of drugs, increase their absorption, and improve their release profile. However, in order to be able to commercially exploit the enormous potential of these nanomedicines is necessary the development of efficient and environmental respectful technologies for the manufacturing at industrial scale of these nanostructured materials. Here I will present some developments performed at our laboratory, which endeavor to show the efficiency of material processing with compressed fluids for the straightforward preparation of micro- and nanoparticulate materials with application in drugdelivery. In these procedures, instead of hazardous organic solvents, green compressed fluids are used as solvent media, which allow the preparation of materials with physico-chemical characteristics unachievable by conventional procedures performed in conventional liquid media. 22
