4 Factors You Can Change Your Risk of Heart and Vascular Disease Smoking/Tobacco Use Blood pressure: Cholesterol (lipid) levels Total mg/dl Triglycerides fat mg/dl HDL good mg/dl LDL bad mg/dl Weight: BMI Job or family stress Diabetes Your A1C result % Sedentary lifestyle Smoking makes the blood clot more easily and causes arteries to tighten. This creates extra work for the heart and damages your blood vessels. Avoid exposure to all tobacco containing products, including second-hand smoke. To decrease risk of heart disease and stroke, your top number should be less than 140 mmhg and the bottom number should be less than 90 mmhg. If you are 80 years old or older, the top number should be less than 150 mmhg and the bottom number should less than 90 mmhg. Higher cholesterol levels cause faster build-up of blockages in the heart, neck, and leg arteries. Keep your triglycerides (fats) less than 150 and HDL ( good ) cholesterol more than 40 (men) or 50 (women). If you have diabetes, heart disease or are at high risk for developing heart disease, guidelines recommend statins or other cholesterol medicine and a decrease in your LDL cholesterol by at least 50%. More weight means more work for your heart. This can also lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart failure. Your body mass index, which is determined by your height and weight, should be less than 25 kg/m 2. Stress can make your heart work harder. Learn to manage your stress. Ask for help if needed. Uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve pain. If you are diabetic, the goal for your hemoglobin A1C is % or less, depending on your age and risk of low blood sugar. Hemoglobin A1c of % indicates pre-diabetes. Hemoglobin A1c of 6.5% or more indicates diabetes. Regular aerobic exercise lowers your risk. The goal is to perform at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. Factors You Cannot Change Age Family history Your risk of heart disease increases as you get older. Even though you cannot change your genetic makeup, you can reduce your risk by adopting healthier lifestyle habits.
5 How You Can Lower the Risk Smoking: Quit now! The benefits occur right away. There are many resources to help you. Call QUIT-NOW ( ) for more information. High Blood Pressure: Take your medicines as prescribed. Lose weight. Reduce your salt, caffeine, and alcohol intake. Get regular exercise. High Blood Lipids: Take your medicines as prescribed. Reduce the amount of saturated and trans fats, simple carbohydrates, and sugar in your diet. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Lose weight and get regular exercise. Talk with your doctor about how often you should get your cholesterol checked. Overweight: Reduce the amount of calories, sugar, saturated and trans-fat that you eat. Increase your daily activity. Read nutrition labels. Consider scheduling a visit with a dietitian. Overstressed: Manage your stress. Take time to learn about ways you can relax and use your time more wisely. Talk with others about your feelings. Exercise. Diabetes: People with diabetes should practice healthy eating habits and get daily exercise. This can help your body to use insulin and lower your blood sugar levels. Inactive Lifestyle: Begin an aerobic exercise program. Walk more. Use the stairs. Park in the farthest space from the store. Maintain healthy heart habits. Follow-up If you recently had a heart attack, angioplasty, or a stent, it is important for you to participate in cardiac rehabilitation. Participating in cardiac rehabilitation has been shown to greatly reduce the risk of future heart problems and will help your recovery process. This program includes exercise and education to assist you in managing your heart and vascular disease risk factors. UW Health has two cardiac rehab program locations. If you live outside of Madison, we will contact your local cardiac rehab program and have them call you for your first appointment. Your local cardiac rehabilitation program is: If you have any questions or concerns about this handout, please call us at: UW Health Preventive Cardiology/Cardiac Rehab (608) (between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm)
