McGuire is on vacation from August 2 to August 19. He left the following for your reflection and amusement. This prayer was composed by Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw, drafted for a homily by Card. John Dearden in Nov for a celebration of departed priests. As a reflection on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Bishop Romero, Bishop Untener included in a reflection book a passage titled, "The mystery of the Romero Prayer." The mystery is that the words of the prayer are attributed to Oscar Romero, but they were never spoken by him. USCCB A Step Along The Way: It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the church s mission. (Continued on page 2)

That is what we are about: We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for God s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs. 4 St. Matthew Catholic Church 4 August 18, 2013 Requirements for Baptisms at St. Matthew A birth certificate is required before parents and sponsors come to the baptismal-prep classes. Children who have reached the age of seven at the time of baptism need to go to a different instruction. For instruction in Spanish, please contact Teresita Contreras. For instruction in English, please contact Janel Worley. The parents and sponsors who do not reside within the parish boundaries or are not registered need to bring permission from their parish. REQUIREMENTS FOR PARENTS: At least one of the parents needs to be a baptized practicing Catholic. Therefore, the practicing Catholic should participate regularly at Sunday Mass and receive Holy Communion. No sacrament of confirmation is needed but it is encouraged. Also, the parents who live together regularly are to be married in the Church. Yet, if they are not married in the Church, there needs to be a dialogue with one of the priests. Those who could get married are to start a marriage preparation. The parents who are already married in the Church need to bring a copy of their marriage certificate before the baptismal-prep classes. If the parents belong to another denomination, there needs to be a dialogue with one of the priests. If no parent or sponsor is Christian from other denomination, the baptism of the child should be postponed. REQUIREMENTS FOR SPONSORS: The Catechism states that parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children (CCC 2223). Thus, sponsors do not substitute for parents in handing down their children the faith of the Church. Yet, sponsors are to encourage parents to fulfill their mission and pray for the child they sponsor. Each child can have one or two sponsors. Yet, if there are two, one is to be a man and the other a woman. They are to be at least sixteen years old. They are to be baptized Catholics who try to live the faith of the Church. If the sponsors are a couple who live together and are not married in the Church, there needs to a dialogue with one of the priests. If sponsors are married in the Church, sponsors are to bring a copy of their marriage certificate. Parents and sponsors need to come to the baptismal-prep classes or bring a letter from having attended the classes somewhere else. If more than six months have passed since the last baptismal-prep class, we ask parents and sponsors to come to class again. Once the above requirements are fulfilled, you may schedule your baptismal class. Los padres y padrinos deben asistir a las clases pre-bautismales o pueden traer una constancia de que asistieron a las clases en otra parroquia. Si más de seis meses han pasado desde la última clase pre-bautismal que asistieron, los padres y padrinos necesitaran asistir a las clases pre-bautismales otra vez.
