1 Home-School Connection Dear Family Member: I m reading Whistle for Willie in class this week. It s about a boy who wishes he could whistle. He tries hard. He must feel sad. The author doesn t say he s sad. I just know how I feel when I can t do something. When I understand things the author doesn t say, I m making inferences. This Week s Skills Comprehension: make inferences Phonics: the sound of aw and au as in pawn and pause Word Workout WORDS TO KNOW early nothing along thought instead suddenly errand My ABCs Let s read the words in A-B-C order. Then we can use each word in a sentence. SPELLING WORDS cause claw dawn haul paw saw Write It Right With your arm, write each spelling word I say in the air. Then spell it aloud. 11 Dawn waited as the judges talked. Finally, the judges said, The winner is Dawn! 14 Can I learn to ice skate? Dawn asked Mom and Dad. It looks like fun. And maybe I can win a contest, too! 3
12 Mom took Dawn to the ice skating rink. Dawn put on her ice skates. It was hard to walk in them! 4 Dawn glided across the ice. Then she did a fast spin. Next she had to jump. She hoped she wouldn t fall. Dawn jumped into the air. It was a perfect jump! 13
13 At last it was the day of the contest. I ll just do my best, Dawn thought. Suddenly it was time for Dawn to skate. 12 Ann was the teacher. She showed Dawn how to glide across the ice. Dawn went around the rink many times. I m skating! she called to Mom. 5
14 Dawn went to the ice rink every Saturday. She had to wake up early. Mom and Dad went along and then did errands. Ann taught Dawn how to turn. 6 Let s make a skating outfit for you, said Mom. Mom and Dawn worked on the outfit. Dad cooked dinner for them. 11
15 Then one day Dawn had big news. Ann wants me to be in a skating contest! she said. That is great, said Mom and Dad. 10 Next, Ann taught Dawn how to do a spin. Dawn said, Nothing is as much fun as this! Dawn is a good skater, Ann told Mom and Dad. 7
16 What Can Dawn Do? Dawn loved skating. She went skating instead of riding her bike or playing. One day Dawn tried to jump, but she fell down. 8 Wow, this is hard! Dawn said. But if I keep trying, I know I can do it. 9
