Psalm 85:9,10 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the middle of the story of Jesus walking on water, the evangelist Matthew includes an episode of his own: the attempt of Peter to join Jesus while also walking on the water himself. As soon as the Apostle got out of the boat to walk on the murky water, he began to sink and became frightened. This is to say that the strongest and the most fervent of the Apostles was not shielded from doubt and fear. Nevertheless, he is the one Christ will choose to be the cornerstone upon which he will build the Church. It is significant that this misadventure happens to Peter, yet he invites us to follow him and work for him in his Church. Jesus wants to remind us that in the midst of doubt, fear and difficulty we may face, He is there to give us a hand, as he did to Peter. He advises us to have confidcnce. Is it not stimulating and comforting? Let us prepare to thank God for His kindness. Decimo Noveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario En medio de la historia de Jesús caminando sobre el agua, el evangelista Mateo incluye un episodio de el: el intento de Pedro para unirse a Jesús caminando sobre el agua. Aun a pesar de esto el es el que Cristo escogió para ser la roca en la cual comenzara su Iglesia. A pesar de esto Pedro nos invita a seguirle y trabajar con el en la Iglesia. Jesús nos indica que a pesar de nuestras dudas y dificultades El esta presente para darnos la mano, como se lo dio a Pedro. El quiere que tengamos confianza en el. Démosle gracias a Dios por su generosidad. Dix-neuvième dimanche du temps ordinaire Au Coeur de son récit de la marche de Jésus sur les eaux, l évangéliste Matthieu ajoute un épisode qui lui est propre: la tentative de Pierre de rejoindre Jésus en marchant, lui aussi, sur les flots. Comme il commencait à s enfoncer, la crainte s empare de lui. C est donc dire que le plus solide et le plus fervent des apôtres n était pas à l abri du doute et de la peur. Pourtant, c est lui que le Christ choisira comme pierre d assise pour l Eglise qu il entend édifier. Il est significatif que cette mésaventure arrive à Pierre. Le Seigneur connaît bien nos faiblesses, pourtant, il nous invite à le suivre et à travailler pour lui dans son Eglise. Il veut nous rappeler que au milieu des doutes, des craintes et des épreuves qui peuvent survenir, il est là pour nous tendre la main, come il l a fait pour Pierre. Il nous invite à la confiance. 3 FREE CATHOLIC PRE-KINDERGARTEN IN N.Y. The Archdiocese of New York announces a program of free universal pre-kindergarten classes intended for 4 year-olds in New York. In any event. please consider taking part in our St. Vincent de Paul Society parish conference s Saturday, Sept. 20, annual Friends of the Poor Walk ' here on the West Side. The monies raised go to support the work of SVDPS for the poor of the Parish. Sign-up/ information sheets are available at the back of the church. AUGUST PARISH EVENTS ( i ) Our Haitian parishioners are sponsoring a three-day bus pilgrimage to the holy sites of Ste. Anne de Beaupre and Cap de la Madeleine in Canada, taking place from Thursday, Aug. 14 to Sunday, Aug.17. For more information or to sign up, phone Adeline ( ) or Flor ( ). (ii) Our Cursillo de Cristiandad will hold a Utrella de Campo on Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Don Bosco Seminary in Haverstraw, N.Y. The transportation cost is $20 per person. (iii) On Friday, Aug. 22, starting at 6:00 p.m., St.Gregory s will observe Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a mass for our dearly departed, the souls in Purgatory, the aged and the terminally ill. A message board will be available on which you may place the names of loved ones. This is a parish-wide event intended for our three communities. BABE RUTH S LIFE OF GIVING Catholicism might not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Babe Ruth. He did, however, invest much time and money in charitable activities, especially those involving the sick and the orphaned. When he was seven, he was sent to live at St. Mary s Industrial School for Boys. There he encountered Brother Matthias Boutlier, a man of towering stature and enormous physical strength who could wallop a baseball for a mammoth distance. Ruth followed the brother to such an extent that, at one point, he spoke of becoming a priest. The athletic calling soon took hold, however. Ruth made his Major League debut on July 11, 1914 with the Boston Red Sox. To the amazement of his teammates, Ruth would often attend Mass in the morning. He often went back to St. Mary s to donate money and take part in fund-raising events. He was sold by the Red Sox to the rival New York Yankees, with whom he became the greatest player of all time. In 1927, Ruth helped establish the American Legion Crippled Children s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. After retiring from baseball, Ruth teamed up with the Red Cross to visit military hospitals after the outbreak of World War II. He also continued to visit countless sick children. He died on August 16, 1948 at the age of 53 from an inoperable neck tumor. He left much of his money to the Babe Ruth Foundation, which focused on helping indigent children.75,000 attended his funeral mass at St. Patrick s Cathedral. LA VIDA DE BABE RUTH Catolicismo no será la primera palabra que viene a nuestra mente cuando pensamos en Babe Ruth. Sin embargo el contribuyo mucho tiempo y dinero en actividades de caridad, especialmente ayudando a los enfermos y los huérfanos. A la edad de siete años fue enviado a vivir en la escuela Industrial St. Mary Para Niños. Allí conoció al Hermano Matthias Boutlier, un hombre de estatura muy alta y con gran fuerza física que podía pegar una pelota a una distancia muy larga. Ruth admiraba a este hermano de tal manera que por un tiempo el pensaba que quería ser un sacerdote. Pero su llamada fue para ser un atleta. Ruth hizo su debut en la Liga Mayor el 11 de Julio de 1914, con el equipo de Boston Red Sox. El atendía misa todas las mañanas.
