1 INFLUENCIA DEL TRATAMIENTO SUPERFICIAL CON PLASMA ATMOSFÉRICO EN LA UNIÓN ESTRUCTURAL DE MATERIALES COMPUESTOS (GRP) EMPLEANDO UN ADHESIVO ACRÍLICO Autor: García Gómez, Alejandro. Entidad Colaboradora: ICAI - Universidad Pontificia Comillas RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO El presente proyecto estudia la influencia del tratamiento superficial con arco de plasma atmosférico a diferentes velocidades de pasada sobre material compuesto GRP (resina epoxi reforzada con fibra de vidrio) en la resistencia de la unión adhesiva. Se han realizado una serie de ensayos tanto de análisis superficial para determinar el efecto del tratamiento superficial en el GRP, como mecánicos para evaluar su efecto en la resistencia mecánica de la unión. Los tratamientos superficiales empleados en la investigación han sido los siguientes: - Limpieza superficial con un disolvente orgánico (etilmetilcetona - MEK) para eliminar la suciedad o contaminación del adherente sin provocar alteraciones físicas o químicas del mismo. Es un tratamiento que se ha realizado en todos los adherentes antes de cualquier estudio. - Tratamiento superficial con arco de plasma atmosférico con diferentes velocidades de pasada (0,2 m/min, 1m/min y 5 m/min). Los ensayos de análisis superficial que se han llevado a cabo durante la investigación han sido:

2 - Medida del ángulo de contacto para analizar la mojabilidad de la superficie y, a partir de estos resultados, calcular la energía superficial del adherente. - Microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) para estudiar la morfología/topografía de la superficie de los adherentes. - Espectroscopía infrarroja por transformada de Fourier (FTIR/ATR) para analizar las modificaciones químicas de la superficie después del tratamiento con plasma. Se han realizado dos tipos de ensayos mecánicos para investigar la influencia del tratamiento superficial con plasma: - Ensayo de cizalla por tracción según norma UNE-EN 1465:2009 para evaluar la eficacia y resistencia de montajes pegados solapados. Además, se han ensayado probetas en condiciones de envejecimiento acelerado para estudiar la durabilidad de la unión adhesiva, y probetas pegadas transcurridos 10 días desde el tratamiento con plasma para examinar la importancia que supone el tiempo transcurrido desde el tratamiento hasta el posterior pegado. - Ensayo de pelado a 90º según norma UNE-EN :1993 para determinar bajo unas condiciones específicas, la resistencia al pelado de una unión adhesiva constituida por un adherente flexible y otro rígido. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran claramente la incompatibilidad del adhesivo acrílico con el tratamiento de plasma sobre el material compuesto de GRP, ya que en todos los casos, se ha tenido una pérdida significativa de resistencia en la unión adhesiva. Sin embargo, en el ensayo de pelado donde se ha empleado un adhesivo diferente, el tratamiento ha mejorado ligeramente la resistencia de la unión. Hay que destacar también que los mejores resultados del tratamiento con plasma no han sido para la velocidad de pasada más lenta de 0,2 m/min como cabría esperar, sino para 1m/min. Estos resultados concuerdan con los obtenidos en los ensayos de

3 análisis superficial. De modo que una mayor exposición de plasma no implica necesariamente un rendimiento mayor de la unión.

4 INFLUENCE OF ATMOSPHERIC PLASMA SURFACE TREATMENT IN THE STRUCTURAL COMPOSITE BONDING (GRP) USING AN ACRYLIC ADHESIVE. Author: García Gómez, Alejandro Project Managers: Real Romero, Juan Carlos del Ballesteros Iglesias, Yolanda Collaborating Institution: ICAI - Universidad Pontificia Comillas PROJECT ABSTRACT The aim of this Project is to study the influence of the surface treatment with an atmospheric plasma arc, at different speed rates, on the strength of adhesive bonding at composite materials made of GRP (epoxy resin reinforced with fibreglass). A series of tests has been carried out to analyze not only the effect of the surface treatment on the GRP but to evaluate, from a mechanical point of view, the strength of the mechanical bonding. The surface treatments performed in the laboratory have been the following: Degreasing the surface using an organic solvent (methyl ethyl ketone MEK) to remove dust, dirt or any other pollution on the adherent without changing or modifying its physical or chemical properties. It has been performed before the test to all the adhesives used in the study. Surface treatment with atmospheric plasma arc at different speed rates (0,2 m/min, 1 m/min and 5 m/min) Under the scope of the surface analysis along the investigation were: Contact angle measurement to analyse the wettability and, according to these results, to obtain the surface energy of the adherents.

5 Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to analyse the morphology/topography of the adherent s surface. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) to analyze the chemical changes on the surface after the plasma treatment. Two different kinds of mechanical tests have been considered in order to find out the influence of the surface plasma treatment: Single-lap shear test, according to the standard UNE-EN 1465:2009, to evaluate the effectiveness and strength of overlapped and bonded assemblies. Additionally, it has been used specimens exposed to accelerated aging conditions to study the durability of the adhesive joint and other test of bonding the adherents after ten days since the atmospheric plasma treatment to determine the importance of the time period from the treatment to the later bond action. Peel test at 90º C, according to the standard UNE-EN :1993, to determine, under specific conditions, the resistance of the adhesive joint to the peeling off. The joint has been made with a rigid adhesive and a flexible one. The data obtained, clearly show the incompatibility between acrylic adhesives and the atmospheric plasma arc treatment on GRP composite material. In all the cases the result has been a significant resistant decrease of the adhesive joint. However, at the peel test, when it has been used a different adhesive, the treatment has slightly improved the results. It is to highlight that the best results after the treatment of the surface with atmospheric plasma were obtained for a speed rate of 1 m/min, when it was expected better results for lower speed rates. The results, in any case, are in line with the ones obtained from the surface analysis test. It means that a longer exposition to the treatment do not necessary improve the strength of the joint.
