2 Tras la novela, y posteriormente la narrativa cinematográfica como forma clave de expresión cultural de la era moderna, la era digital introduce su correlato: las bases de datos. Es natural, entonces, que queramos desarrollar una poética, una estética y una ética de los datos. Lev Manovich, The Language of New Media Big Bang Data es un proyecto comisariado por Olga Subirós y José Luis de Vicente coproducido por Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona y Fundación Telefónica. Se presentó del 9 de mayo al 16 de noviembre de 2014 en el Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona y del 12 de marzo al 24 de mayo de 2015 en Espacio Fundación Telefónica de Madrid. Big Bang Data es un proyecto expositivo que aborda la revolución de los datos masivos hoy. Trata de manera integrada la cultura del siglo XXI y las grandes transformaciones de la era digital. Aborda espacios de fricción que estos cambios comportan: desde la ciencia, la innovación tecnológica y social, los retos políticos, económicos y culturales. Es un exposición sobre la datificación del mundo: Los datos son el nuevo petróleo? una fuente de riqueza potencialmente infinita? o deben ser, sobre todo, una herramienta para construir una democracia más transparente y participativa? Para navegar en esta temática la exposición combina instalaciones y proyectos artísticos, documentación histórica, entrevistas, documentos audiovisuales, prototipos tecnológicos, así como un espacio para proyectos participativos. El espacio expositivo, en este proyecto, es también una plataforma de encuentro y debate sobre un tema de máxima actualidad, que acoge talleres, hackathons, programas educativos así como encuentros de comunidades locales e internacionales. Big Bang Data explora la producción de datos en volúmenes masivos es uno de los hechos fundamentales de nuestro tiempo. Mientras que a lo largo de los últimos quince años el coste de almacenar información digital ha disminuido enormemente, el número de dispositivos que captan, producen y transmiten datos se ha multiplicado de forma exponencial. La vasta infraestructura industrial que se despliega por todo el mundo para almacenar memorias, palabras, imágenes y actos requiere ya el 2% del consumo energético global. La explosión de los datos crece desenfrenadamente, sin que nadie acierte a ver su fin. Los datos generados por redes de sensores en infraestructuras y en tecnologías industriales, y también por los ciudadanos en las redes sociales, los teléfonos móviles, las transacciones con tarjeta de crédito y los dispositivos GPS, aparecen hoy como una oportunidad y una herramienta clave. Tras la explosión de datos se encuentran nuevas maneras de resolver problemas y plantear preguntas que ya están cambiando la forma cómo se practica la ciencia, cómo se genera valor en la economía y cómo se organizan la política y la sociedad. Los datos pueden ser un elemento central para promover una democracia más participativa y una administración más eficaz. Sin embargo, también pueden utilizarse como armas para instaurar un estado de vigilancia sin precedentes. El acceso a los datos, el derecho a su uso y el valor que atesoran son factores que se sitúan en el centro de múltiples conflictos contemporáneos: desde la lucha por la transparencia hasta las repercusiones políticas de las filtraciones de Wikileaks y el caso Snowden, pasando por la mercantilización de la intimidad que practican los gigantes de Silicon Valley. Vivimos la emergencia de la base de datos como un marco de pensamiento cultural y político y los efectos de la datificación del mundo, un proceso tan determinante en el siglo xxi como lo fue la electrificación en el xix. The project is coproduced by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona and Fundación Telefónica. The exhibit was shown from 9 May to 16 November 2014 at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona and from 12 March to 24 May 2015 at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Madrid. It is an exhibition on the datafication of the world: Is data the new oil, a source of potentially infinite wealth? Or should it be, above all, a tool to build a more transparent and participative democracy? To navigate these themes the exhibition combines installations and artistic projects, historical documents, interviews, audiovisual materials and technological prototypes. It also provides a space for collaborative projects. The exhibit s space, in this project, doubles as a platform for meeting and debate on this cutting-edge topic. The space hosts workshops, hacka-thons, educational programs as well as meetings of local and international communities. Big Bang Data explores the generation of massive volumes of data as one of the fundamental facts of our time. While over the past fifteen years the cost of storing digital information has decreased enormously, the number of devices that collect, create and send data has multiplied exponentially. The vast industrial infrastructure that has spread across the globe to store memories, words, images and events already accounts for 2% of the world s energy consumption. The data explosion is growing wildly, with no end in sight. The data generated by the networks of sensors in infrastructure and in industrial technology, also by citizens on social media, mobile telephones, credit card transactions, GPS transmitters appears today both as an opportunity and a key tool. Following the explosion of data, new ways of problem-solving and posing questions are being found that are already changing how science is done, how economic value is created and in how politics and society are structured. Data can be a central element for making democracy more participative and government more efficient. However, it can also be used as a weapon to create an unprecedented level of surveillance. The access to data, the rights to its use and the value that it holds are factors at the core of various contemporary conflicts: from the struggle for transparency to the political repercussions from the revelations from Wikileaks and the Snowdon case, including as well the commercialization of privacy by the giants of Silicon Valley. We experience the emergence of the database as a frame for cultural and political thinking and the effects of the world s datafication as a process as decisive in the 21st century as the harnessing of electricity was in the 19th

A history of the Information Explosion La Nube, el nombre genérico para los servicios que preservan nuestras fotos, s, documentos de trabajo y mapas digitales, es quizá una de las metáforas más engañosas jamás acuñadas. Detrás de ella no hay nada ligero ni intangible. Nuestra insaciable sed de datos ha producido una gran industria pesada, que no se diferencia demasiado de las factorías de la era mecánica, y una telaraña de cables y ondas electromagnéticas que envuelve el planeta por completo. Mantener nuestro ritmo incesante de producción y consumo de datos y asegurar su permanente accesibilidad tiene un impacto energético que ya no es trivial. The cloud, the generic name for the services that store our photos, s, work documents and digital maps, is perhaps one of the most deceptive metaphors ever created. Behind it there is nothing light or nebulous. Our unquenchable thirst for data has given rise to a vast heavy industry, not that much different from the factories of the industrial age, with a spider s web of cables and electromagnetic waves that completely envelopes the planet. Maintaining our incessant pace of production and consumption of data and keeping it permanently accessible has an energy impact that is no longer incidental. The idea that we live under the shockwave of a huge information explosion is not new. However, the growth rate over the past decade in our ability to create, transmit and store data is unprecedented. Fifty years ago, a hard drive was an enormous device, the size of a truck, holding the equivalent of one song in MP3 format, a ridiculous sliver of the capacity of the phones we carry today in our pockets. And the more that our personal experiences and collective history are codified in digital devices, the more urgent the problem of their long-term preservation becomes. This example takes the opposite approach and takes for granted the planned obsolescence of data storage devices, building an item that will be usable for more than one thousand years. The Long Now Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that promotes long-term thinking, leads the Rosetta Project, a digital archive of the world s languages. Within the context of this project, in 2008 the Foundation manufactured the Rosetta Disc, a nickel disc that is 3 inches (7.62cm) in diameter and holds more than 13,000 pages of information on more than 1,500 human languages. Each page takes up only half a millimeter and can be read on a microscope capable of 650x magnification. The disc is designed to last for thousands of years and to serve in the future as a testament of human experience and intelligence, as expressed in our uncountable languages. Long Now Foundation

The Social Production of Data Con el nacimiento de la estadística moderna, a mediados del siglo XIX, como disciplina capaz de explicar distintos fenómenos sociales, científicos y económicos, surge la necesidad de forjar un nuevo lenguaje que salve la distancia existente entre la medición cuantitativa de la realidad y nuestra necesidad de narraciones para entender el mundo.la práctica de transformar cifras en imágenes para contar una historia tiene una larga tradición en la ciencia y el diseño, que abarca desde las cartas figurativas del siglo XIX hasta la visualización de datos hoy. En la segunda mitad del siglo XX, artistas de distintos ámbitos empiezan a crear una estética de la información, en la que los datos se convierten en un instrumento para la representación y la exploración subjetiva. Por este motivo, actualmente se están utilizando técnicas como el análisis de sentimientos (sentiment analysis) para intentar determinar nuestras preferencias colectivas a la hora de comprar un producto u opinar sobre una decisión política. Up until a decade ago, the great majority of data produced in the world was a result of scientific, industrial o administrative processes. But the explosion of mobile technology and the popularization of social media of the Web 2.0 have changed this radically: today the main cause of data explosion is the daily activities of millions of citizens. Whether it be searches on Google, uploading videos on YouTube, sending a message on Twitter or accepting a friend request on Facebook, our activities produce digital footprints in which our desires, fears and hopes are captured. For this reason, techniques such as sentiment analysis are being used today to try and determine our collective preferences at the moment of buying a product or commenting on a political decision. La serie comprende más de piezas algunas se han roto, en las que el globo terráqueo aparece como medio para el arte y el periodismo al mostrar, mediante la representación en el mapa, datos sobre temas políticos, económicos, geográficos, sociales, históricos, medioambientales y tecnológicos, entre otros. Ingo Günther, World Processor is a project that consists of a series of globes of the Earth that graphically illustrate more than 300 subjects using information valid at the time of their creation. The series includes more than 1,000 pieces, some of which have been damaged, in which the globe serves as a medium for art and journalism to show, by way of representation on the map, data on political, economic, geographical, social, historical, environmental and technological issues, among others. El propósito de esta instalación es mostrar el diluvio de imágenes que internet condensa diariamente y cómo nos hemos habituado a consumirlas, así como tomar conciencia del hecho que las fotografías pasan del ámbito privado al público al subirlas a la red. Eric Kessels, This installation is made up of a mound of printed photographs that corresponds to the images uploaded to Flickr over a 24 hour period. The purpose of this installation is to show the deluge of images that the Internet condenses daily and how we have become accustomed to consuming them. It also raises awareness of the fact that photographs pass from the private to the public domain when they are uploaded to the Internet. The fact that they are printed gives us an overwhelming physical view of what this over a million images really means. Eric Kessels, Año: Hello World!
