5 Spain at the Olympics Spain first participated in the 1900 Olympics. Since 1920 Spain has participated in most Summer Olympics and most Winter Olympics since Spain has boycotted two Olympics. They boycotted the Summer Olympics in 1936 which were held in Nazi Germany. They also boycotted the 1956 Summer Olympics, in protest of the Soviet Union s invasion of Hungary. Barcelona The 1992 Summer Olympics were held in Spain in the city of Barcelona. This is the first and only time the Olympics have been held in Spain. Spain has won a total of 115 Olympic medals. Only 2 of these were won at the Winter Olympics (both for alpine skiing). All the rest were won at the Summer Olympics. Of the 113 Summer Olympic medals, 34 were gold, 49 were silver and the rest were bronze. The top five most successful sports for Spain, in terms of number of medals won are as follows: Sailing (vela) 17 Cycling (ciclismo) 14 Athletics (atletismo) 11 Tennis (tenis) 11 Canoeing (piragüismo) 9 For the London 2012 Olympics, the tennis player Rafael Nadal is going to be the Spanish flag bearer. He will march in front of the rest of the team during the Opening Ceremony, carrying the Spanish flag. Spain at the Paralympics Athletes from Spain have competed at the Paralympic Games since the 1968 Summer games. Spain hosted the 1992 Summer Paralympics. Spanish athletes have won a total of 588 medals at the Paralympics, including 191 gold medals.
