1 HORTONVILLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 MAYO, 2012 YA ESTA AQUI EL VERANO, PERO NO DEJEN DE APRENDER! El verano es un momento emocionante para los padres y estudiantes. It gives them a break from the routine of having to get ready for school and doing homework. At first, everyone is happy, but sooner or later, kids start to get bored. Here are some ways to keep learning ( in a fun way) over the summer: Visit the Greenville Zoo! Check out the lions, tigers, and bears! Visit the Appleton Public Library. There are programs, presentations, and concerts! Keep a journal about all the things that you do over the summer, and then write about your favorite experiences! Read a book to your dog/cat! Use your math skills at the grocery store! Go to one of the websites listed to the right! On you can create your own story using the pictures on the website. It would be a fun summer project! Parents may need to help younger students set up a username and password. Anyone can be an author! Use the Rosetta Stone program, provided by school, to practice skills. GOOD INTERNET SITES Com (preschool/kinder) Read, read, read! There are adventures waiting for you! You just have to open a book! IS YOUR SON/DAUGHTER ENTERING MIDDLE SCHOOL NEXT YEAR? Mrs. McGovern, along with Mrs. Cornell, the counselor at Greenville Middle School, will be offering a class this summer for students entering the middle school next year to help them with some of the challenges they will encounter. They will talk about how to organize homework, improve communication with teachers, and how to deal with peer pressure. The class will be held the week of August for a couple hours a day. Transportation will not be available. If you are interested, please sign up in the Greenville Elementary office.

4 Celebrations! Celebraciones! Los estudiantes del segundo grado trabajaron muy duro en el programa de IXL este año. Dos veces a la semana, se quedaron adentro durante uno de sus recreos para practicar matemáticas en las computadoras. Para celebrar, comieron pizza! Excelente trabajo!! The second graders worked very hard on IXL this year. Twice a week, they stayed inside during one of their recesses, to practice math on the computers. To celebrate, they had a pizza party! Excellent job second graders! It is always nice to see a student s progress, but when a student reaches full English proficiency, it is truly a cause for celebration. Karina Cornejo s dedication to her school studies and acquiring mastery of English has earned her the Full English Proficiency Award based on the statewide ACCESS test given to our ELL students each year. Karina really shows us how hard work and dedication help students to achieve success! We are all proud of you! Congratulations, Karina! 5 HORTONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL On May 4, Hortonville High School students visited the Milwaukee Public Museum. They enjoyed a wide variety of exhibits including The Streets of Old Milwaukee, the butterfly house, an Egyptian mummy, dinosaur, and much more!
