Moses and Aaron directly tell us that prayer is essential. As a matter of fact, in the first reading Aaron and Hur sustained the whole people of Israel in the battle against Amalek and his troops. Israel was winning as long as Moses had his hands and arms up - the chief sign of prayer. Moses is a figure of a high priest interceding for the people. Moses also represents the prophets and the Scriptures, which provide for us words for prayer. Many times we find ourselves in spiritual battles; we find ourselves in the same situation of Moses: being obliged to trust God with our lives through prayers - especially when we have no resources in ourselves. In the same way that we eat three times a day, we should also pray at least three times a day. Prayer is oxygen for the soul; it is the way we ask to the Lord for what we need, hope for and how to love him. For this reason, Jesus underlines in the Gospel that prayer has to be constant and done with faith. 4 Page 4 Sunday XXIX in Ordinary Time October 16, 2016 Reflexión del Domingo XXVIII del Tiempo Ordinario Hoy vemos a Jesús compartiendo un banquete, invitado por un fariseo. Muchas veces el Evangelio nos muestra la humanidad de Jesús asistiendo a comidas ofrecidas por sus seguidores de su mensaje. También acude a otras comidas con gente que son más hostiles pues él no rechaza aquellas invitaciones que por curiosidad o por tenderle una trampa les hacían los escribas, fariseos y publicanos que son enemigos de su mensaje. Jesús siente la alegría de poder ofrecer su mensaje de salvación a todos aquellos los que lo buscan con sinceridad. Recordamos a Zaqueo el recaudador de impuestos, que era un corrupto y que era odiado por su propio pueblo, pero después del encuentro con Jesús se convierte y devuelve el dinero ganado injustamente y al renacer a una vida nueva Jesús le dice hay que celebrarlo en torno a la mesa. En el evangelio de hoy vemos que Jesús es invitado por un fariseo y aprovecha la ocasión para proponer a los invitados el lugar que deben de elegir al sentarse a la mesa, la actitud del invitado debe ser de humildad. Es normal ver hoy que también en cualquier evento, que los invitados eligen los primeros puestos, o la mejor posición. El Evangelio nos dice en cambio que nos sentemos en el último lugar, esto nos puede parecer como una simple norma de buena conducta. Esto no es así porque nos introduce en algo básico de la vida cristiana que es la humildad. Una virtud difícil de entender porque va en contra de nuestras apetencias y nuestros deseos propios de protagonismo. Hoy la sociedad tan competitiva y prepotente lo que menos busca es la humildad porque hemos sido educados para triunfar para el éxito. En el cristianismo al hablar de humidad nos recuerda la palabra de Jesús diciendo: El que quiera ganar la vida la perderá, pero el que esté dispuesto a perderla por mi causa la ganará. Perder para ganar esta es la disposición del que entiende la necesidad de hacerse pequeño para entender el mensaje cristiano porque la consecuencia de ser humilde ayuda a aceptar los planes de dios sobre nosotros y nos hace estar dispuesto a servir sobre todo a los más necesitados.
