2 Page 2 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 30, 2018 THE HOLY FAMILY "After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers." As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension. While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on second thought, are our families so different? When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprised. They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period. They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." All our children have an "otherness" about them, something that makes them unique and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own children become? What temple will they wander off to? Who will they astound? Cycles of Faith Religious Education News! Classes resume on Wednesday, January 9th at 5:30pm at the school. Youth Night resumes on Tuesday, January 8th. Altar Society Meeting Wednesday, January 2nd 12:00pm-2:00pm in the Hall All women of the parish are invited to attend this luncheon meeting. Call the Parish Office with any questions. We have TWO opportunities for you! The first is to give thanks to God for the past year. Join us on Monday, December 31st for our 7:30am Mass. At 6pm we ll have a bilingual Vigil Mass to honor Mary as the Holy Mother of God. The second is to pray for the year ahead and to honor Mary as the Holy Mother of God. Join us on New Year s Day, Tuesday, January 1st at 9:00am for Mass. Please note: there is no 6:00pm Mass that day. Many thanks to our Director of Religious Education, Elena Platas, for planning our Advent family event: One Starry Night on December 5th. And thank you to all the volunteers. It was a wonderful chance for families to hear the story of the first Christmas and to share their own stories. On our Cover and throughout the bulletin are photos of the families who participated in our Advent Event. Everyone is welcome to attend our Anointing of the Sick Mass Saturday, January 5th 9:00am In an earlier bulletin we published that our parish would be helping serve a meal on January 12th to the Central American migrants who are waiting to complete the asylum process. Because of health regulations, they are now asking that we not assist them in that way. Instead, we are asked to help by supplying warm clothing. You may help them directly by donating warm clothing, under garments and socks. Clothes can be dropped off at Our Lady of Guadalupe at 345 Anita St., Chula Vista, CA
