1 SER AND ESTAR They both mean to be. However they are used differently. Ser is derived from the latin verb esse which was used to refer to being in the sense of existence and has produced words like essence: describing what things are like in essence. Estar is derived from the latin verb stare which means to stand / being in the sense of position/ place and also refers to temporary state and has produced words like stationary, static, station, state. To sum up ser is used to indicate what someone/ something is and its natural, basic, expected qualities. Estar is used to indicate where someone/something is and states brought about by circumstances.
