4 ARTÍCULOS INDEFINIDOS - The indefinite article The word for A, AN, A FEW and SOME also depends on whether the noun it goes with is masculine or feminine, singular or plural. SINGULAR UN UNA UNOS PLURAL UNAS Un río A river Una casa A house Unos niños Some children Unas playas Some beaches Indefinite article agrees with the noun in GENDER and NUMBER. 5 ARTÍCULOS INDEFINIDOS - The indefinite article The indefinite article is sometimes not used in Spanish where we use it in English: 1) It isn t used when stating somebody s NATIONALITY or JOB: Es francés He s a Frenchman Es secretaria She s a secretary 2) It isn t used after the verb TENER in negative sentences: No tengo hermanos I haven t got a brother No tengo trabajo I haven t got a job ARTÍCULOS DEFINIDOS - The definite articles The definite article is sometimes used in Spanish where we don t use it in English: 1) It is used with LANGUAGES, except with HABLAR and ESTUDIAR. -El inglés es interesante English is interesting -Hablo/estudio francés I speak/study French 2) It is used with DAYS OF THE WEEK to mean on : -Tengo que trabajar el SÁBADO I have to work on Saturday. -Juego al fútbol los JUEVES I play football on Thursdays.
6 LOS COLORES Colours are ADJECTIVES. When they describe a noun, they agree with its GENDER and NUMBER. So, red is rojo, but becomes roja with a feminine noun, eg la pelota roja. negro, negra, blanco, blanca, amarillo, amarilla, morado, morada.. Some colours don t change their endings to match the GENDER: naranja: el bolso naranja rosa: la camisa rosa marrón: la hoja marrón azul: el cielo azul verde: el campo verde gris: la nube gris Los colores y Vocabulario POEMA Blanco como la nieve Negro como el carbón Rojas son las cerezas, Como la sangre y el corazón. It's siete and diez but seis. 6 SEIS -six SIETE - seven OCHO -eight NUEVE -nine DIEZ -ten Look out for the number 1. UNO is the name of the number, but if it goes with a noun it can be UN or UNA, depending on the gender: Un hombre. Una mujer. Jugamos?
