3 Week of February 5, 2012 Page Three Mensaje del Párroco Message from the Pastor Dear friends, It is true, yes, I will be leaving our parish in August of this year. There is still a lot of work and preparation for the one who will come to be the next Pastor. Someone said to me, You look happy as they responded to my decision to say yes when my Provincial asked me if I would consider leaving Holy Cross-Immaculate Heart of Mary, after so many years of service here, to carry on the work of leadership training. I said to the young person, No, I think what I feel is more a sense of gratefulness and relief that our Province of Claretians are concerned with the mission with which we are entrusted. And the mission is to share what we have learned together about Church and work for justice in our Church. I was asked to help accompany laity and work to create some pilot projects of leadership in California and in Chicago. I will live, at least for a time, in Los Angeles to work with the priests and laity while continuing to encourage the teams in Chicago. Any change is not easy, and this change is challenging. Whether we like it or not, change is bound to happen if we want to live the mission of Jesus. Just read how the scriptures come alive in these weeks as we listen to how the disciples are responding to Jesus call to serve others. As with any change we are asked to make a choice: yes or no. Either choice has consequences. How do you decide? Years ago, I was asked if my work was complete and if I would be willing to leave. I said no. But this time when I was asked it was connected to us and the need of the larger Church. Since I believe very much in the capability of our parish leaders and those working to carry out the mission, those who have taught me to be more trusting and willing to give, I said yes. For me, choices are made in light of the action of community and family life. It is a little scary to live the mission in another part of the world I do not know, but the image my friends and Gospel coworkers have used in these weeks have helped me better to understand the yes. One image was around the experience of family: It is difficult for a parent when a child announces they are getting married and will be leaving the home. There are so many good memories and so much life has been shared. Feelings are definitely mixed. It is not exactly about being happy or sad but maybe about being proud and grateful. Another shared image that reflects on empowering leadership: This feels like all these years we have been in a class learning together, and now we must take the test. I hate tests! Another image: We are in the place of the transfiguration and want to stay in the light and goodness of Jesus, but he tells us No, we are going to Jerusalem. Another image from scripture: You are salt of the earth! An image from our own tradition: Our Lady of Guadalupe sent Juan Diego to build the church. After I told the staff and Parish Council, I listened to much gratitude expressed by others. There was also a genuine acknowledgment by them that our leadership will respond generously and not let what is valued in our parish mission and community die. These expressions will guide me and encourage others with great hope. A friend told me yesterday, the hope of our people is why violence, poverty and injustice will not triumph in the end. Well, help is nearby! Did you know that our parish has a Computer Lab for high school and college students? It is open weekdays from 9:00 am until pm, and on Saturday mornings 9:00 am 12:00 pm at the parish office. High School and College students need to bring their school ID to sign in and the first time you come in, you will need to fill out a registration form, and pay a $5 users fee which lasts till August! Years ago the distinguished scholar John Ruskin said, The object of education is to make people not merely do the right things, but enjoy the right things; not merely learn, but to love knowledge; not merely pure, but to love purity; not merely just, but to hunger and thirst after justice. It s a hot meal program served Monday through Friday after school, from 3-5 pm, at Casa Romero, 4600 South Honore. ALL CHILDREN AND YOUTH from the community are invited, ages You don t have to register ahead of time, just come in and ask for Yolanda. Maybe you want to help out at Kid s Café! We serve meals every day, and Yolanda would welcome the help of regular volunteers. Tasks include serving food to the children, and light cleanup. Possible hours are Monday through Friday, between 1:00 and 5:30 pm. Call Yolanda González at for more information. We know you have off school Monday the 13th and Monday the 20th! Call Yolanda to offer your help don t just waste your days! On Monday the 13th, she will be preparing for the Kid s Café 11th Birthday celebration to be held on the 17th. La próxima semana se llevara acabo LA CAMPAÑA CATÓLICA ANUAL ARQUIDIOCESANA Les pedimos a todas las familias que sean generosos con su contribución a esta campaña. Les entregaramos los sobres para su contribución en la entrada. Por favor llene la forma y entréguela durante la segunda colecta. Además de proveer fondos para ministerios y servicios en toda la Arquidiócesis, la Campaña también financia servicios que son de gran ayuda a otros ministerios aquí en nuestra parroquia. Por ejemplo, la Campaña aporta fondos para apoyar programas para liderazgo laicos. Este año, el tema de la Campaña es: Sean imitadores de Cristo. A todos se nos presenta el desafío de intentar vivir nuestras vidas teniendo la vida de Cristo como un ejemplo. Cristo nos dio el camino a la vida eterna. Su amor por cada uno de nosotros no puede tomarse a la ligera. Al contemplar los dones que nos ha dado, debemos reflexionar también sobre nuestra gratitud por dichos dones. Su apoyo financiero a la obra de nuestra parroquia, de nuestra Arquidiócesis y de la Iglesia en todo el mundo es, de hecho, una forma de expresar esta gratitud.por favor, dé generosamente a la Campaña Católica Anual Cuando nuestra parroquia alcance el objetivo de reunir $11,290.00, en promesas pagadas, se nos devolverá el 100% de los fondos adicionales que recibamos para utilizarlo en nuestra parroquia. Next week we will have the 2012 Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal. We are asking all the families to pick up an envelope at the entrance of the church and complete the form inside. The completed envelope should be returned during the second collection. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to other ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: Be Imitators of Christ. We are all challenged to try to live our lives using the life of Christ as an example. Christ gave us the path to eternal life. His love for each of us cannot be taken lightly. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $11, in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish.
