3 Week of January 12, 2014 A LETTER. Page Three We don t cancel Posadas, do we? asked a woman at the last stop on the last, very, very cold night of Posadas No, we don t was my answer. In over 20 years, we have not cancelled Posadas due to cold, rain, sickness, you name it. Every one of the eight nights of each year, we go out together, walking, searching, accompanying Maria y José and each other as we look for The Place where God will be born again, anew, in our midst. Today s gospel is the story of Jesus being baptized. It is a little difficult to grasp, coming just after the stories of the Three Wise Men. Jesus was baptized as an adult, a bit different than what we would imagine, especially soon after we celebrated his birth. But what his baptism is about is Mission. In Matthew s gospel, which is the one we hear today, this baptism is Jesus first public act in which he makes the choices. Before this, he depends on his Mother, on Joseph, on others to guide him. In today s gospel, Jesus steps forward and puts his life to be at the service of others, as a beloved Son of God. And so as adults we do too. We are asked to put aside the comfort of allowing others to tell us what to do, and we must step up. The experience of Posadas this year was so very rich for me. There is of course the excitement and animation of the children. That is always a joy. But what struck me more this year was the leadership shown by so very many people teens and adults. The grandmother who helped dress Mary and Joseph on the different nights. The men who helped carry the sound system so the people could hear the prayers on the processions. Those who kept the songs going when the route seemed so long and cold. The families who prepared hot drinks and sweets to encourage us on the journey. The many persons and families who came together to plan and contribute to the fiestas. The teens who stepped in to help with the piñatas when the adults were busy with other things. And many more. The experience of Las Posadas for me this year was an experience of the community coming together, in prayer and companionship and service. These years have been hard for this community in so many ways. But we don t give up, we keep walking together. Y juntos caminando, podremos alcanzar otra ciudad que no se acaba, sin penas ni tristezas, ciudad de eternidad. Yes, God is with us. May we as a parish community recognize, each one of us, that we are the Beloved Children of God, and take our active part in making this a community where peace and justice reign. Mateo 3: 17 No se cancelan las posadas? Pregunto una mujer en la última parada, de una noche mucho muy fría, y última noche de las posadas No se cancelan fue mi respuesta. En más de 20 años, no hemos cancelado Posadas debido al frio, lluvia, enfermedad, lo que sea. Cada una de las ocho noches de cada año, vamos juntos, caminando, buscando, acompañando a Maria y José y a cada uno de nosotros buscando un Lugar en donde nacerá Dios otra vez, nuevamente, en nuestro alrededor. En el Evangelio de hoy es la historia donde Jesús es bautizado. Es un poco difícil de entender, después de las historias de los Tres Reyes Magos. Jesús fue bautizado como un adulto, un poco diferente de lo que nosotros nos lo imaginamos, especialmente después de celebrar su nacimiento. Pero el significado de su bautismo es sobre la Misión. En el evangelio que escuchamos hoy de Mateo, es donde Jesús hace su primer acto público donde él hace sus propias decisiones. Antes de esto, él depende de su Madre, en José, o en otras personas para que le guíen. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús da un paso al frente y pone su vida al servicio de los demás, como un Hijo Amado de Dios. De igual manera como adultos nosotros debemos hacerlo también. Se nos pide que pongamos a un lado la comodidad de permitir a otros hacer nuestras decisiones, y dar un paso al frente. Para mí, la experiencia de las Posadas este año fue muy rica. Por supuesto está la emoción y la animación de los niños. Siempre es una alegría. Pero lo que más me tocó fue el liderazgo que se demostró de tanta gente jóvenes y adultos. La abuelita que ayudó a vestir a Jose y Maria en las diferentes noches. El señor que ayudó a cargar el sistema de sonido para que la gente pudiera escuchar las oraciones en las procesiones. Aquellos que ayudaron con los cantos cuando las rutas parecían tan largas y frías. Las familias que preparaban las bebidas calientitas y dulces para darnos ánimo en nuestro caminar. A las muchas personas y familias que se unían para planificar y contribuir para las fiestas. A los jóvenes que se encargaron de ayudaron con las piñatas cuando los adultos estaban ocupados con otras cosas. Y tantos otros más. La experiencia de Las Posadas para mí este año fue una experiencia de una comunidad que se une, en oración, acompañamiento y servicio. Estos años han sido difíciles para esta comunidad en muchas maneras. Pero no nos damos por vencidos, seguimos caminando unidos. Y juntos caminando, podremos alcanzar otra ciudad que no se acaba, sin penas ni tristezas, ciudad de eternidad. Si, Dios está con nosotros. Que nosotros como comunidad parroquial reconozcamos, en cada uno de nosotros, que somos Hijos Amados de Dios, y tomemos nuestra parte activa para hacer esta una comunidad donde reine la paz y la justicia. Que Dios bendiga en este Nuevo Año a nuestra comunidad parroquial! - Hermana Angie

Children s Choir El Coro de Niños ensaya cada viernes a las 5:00 pm en la iglesia de Santa Cruz, y también canta en la misa de las 10:30 am los domingos en Santa Cruz. The Children s Choir practices every Friday at 5 pm in Holy Cross Church, and sings in the 10:30 am mass on Sunday in Holy Cross. Por el Bautismo, nosotros volvemos a renacer como hijos e hijas de Dios, y se nos da la bienvenida como miembros de la comunidad eclesial. Es bueno que repasemos las guias de nuestra parroquia sobre el Bautismo. EL BAUTISMO DE LOS INFANTES EL BAUTISMO DE UN INFANTE usualmente se refiere a niños menores de 6 años. Los padres que requiran el bautismo del infante tienen que hacerlo por lo menos un mes de anticipación de la fecha deseada del bautismo. Es necesario que por lo menos un padre de familia venga a la oficina de la parroquia personalmente para llenar una solicitud y hacer arreglos. El/ella tiene que traer la acta de nacimiento del niño cuando venga a hacer los arreglos. Los Padrinos tienen que estar casadas por la Iglesia Católica (puede ser entre ellos o hacia otra persona) o estar soltero/a. La misma poliza se aplica a los padrinos de niños y adultos. Through BAPTISM, we are reborn as children of God, and welcomed as members of the Church community. Baptism is the first sacrament. It is good that we review our parish guidelines on Baptism. THE BAPTISM OF INFANTS THE BAPTISM OF AN INFANT ordinarily refers to children under the age of 6. The parents requesting the baptism of an infant should do so at least one month in anticipation of the desired date of baptism. It is necessary that at least one of the parents come to the parish office personally to complete the application and make arrangements. He/she should bring the child s birth certificate at the time of the arrangements. The Godparents need to be married in the Catholic Church, (whether to each other or another) or be single. This same policy applies to godparents of children and adults. EL BAUTISMO DE UN NIÑO/A EL BAUTISMO DE UN NIÑO/A usualmente se refiere a los niños de edad de escuela, entre las edades de 6 a 14 años. Es necesario que el niño/a de esta edad reciba instrucción catequético en la preparación del sacramento del Bautismo. En nuestra parroquia, esto se lleva acabo por medio de la participación del programa de Educación Religiosa para niños/ as de la parroquia. EL BAUTISMO DE UN ADULTO EL BAUTISMO DE UN ADULTO usualmente se refiere a personas de la edad de 15 años en adelante. El adulto participará en un proceso en la parroquia que se llama El Rito de la Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos. THE BAPTISM OF CHILDREN THE BAPTISM OF A CHILD ordinarily refers to children of school age, between the ages of 6 and 14. It is necessary that a child of this age receive catechetical instruction in preparation for the sacrament of Baptism. At our parish, this is done through participation in the parish Religious Education program for children. THE BAPTISM OF AN ADULT THE BAPTISM OF AN ADULT ordinarily refers to persons ages 15 and older. The adult will participate in the parish process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
