Past continuous or past progressive Pasado continuo o pasado progresivo Por: Blanca Rosa González El pasado continuo también se le puede llamar pasado progresivo. The past continuous can be also named past progressive. La estructura de una oración en pasado continuo o pasado progresivo, está formada de la siguiente manera: Figura 1. Estructura del pasado continuo o pasado progresivo. Usos Uses El pasado continuo o progresivo tiene los siguientes usos: The Past Continuous expresses a past activity that has duration (Soars & Soars, 2001, p.142). El pasado continuo expresa una actividad que sucedió en el pasado y que tiene duración. 1
I met her while I was living in Guadalajara. Yo la conocí mientras estaba viviendo en Guadalajara. You were working last night. Ustedes estaban trabajando la noche de ayer. The activity began before the action expresses by the Simple Past (Soars 2001, p.142). La acción comenzó antes que la acción expresada por el Pasado Simple, es decir, muchas veces al comunicar vamos a combinar el pasado simple y el continuo. El pasado continuo comunica acciones o detalles que estaban sucediendo, estaban en progreso, o aun no terminaban. She was baking a cake when we arrived. Ella estaba horneando un pastel cuando nosotros llegamos. Figura 1. DSCF0001_6 (Hadden, 2002). When I found Patricio he was eating breakfast. Cuando encontré a Patricio, él estaba comiendo su desayuno. Figura 2. Brakfast before the Shinkansen (Gladis, 2006). 2
The past continuous expresses an activity in progress before, and probably after, a time in the past. (Soars 2001, p.142). El pasado continuo expresa una actividad que inició antes y probablemente continuó por un tiempo más durante el pasado. When she woke up this morning, the baby was crying. Cuando ella despertó esta mañana, el bebé estaba llorando (el bebé siguió llorando por más tiempo). Figura 3. Silent scream (Pottier, 2006). When the student finished his homework, his mother was washing the clothes. Cuando el estudiante terminó su tarea, su mamá estaba lavando la ropa (la mamá siguió lavando por un tiempo más). Figura 4. Woman at the community laundry on Satruday afternoon, FSA... camp, Robstown, Tex. (LoC) (Rothstein,1939). 3
Oraciones afirmativas Affirmative sentences La estructura para oraciones afirmativas es la siguiente: Personal Pronoun Simple Past Verb to be verb ing Complement I He She It was playing working cooking yesterday. when you arrived. We You were They Figura 2. Estructura de oraciones afirmativas (Soars & Soars, 2001, p.142) Oraciones negativas Negative sentences La forma de estructurar oraciones negativas es la siguiente: Personal Pronoun Simple Past Verb to be verb ing Complement I He She It We You They was not = wasn t were not = weren t playing working cooking yesterday. when you arrived. Figura 3. Estructura de oraciones negativas (Soars & Soars, 2001, p.142) 4
Oraciones de pregunta Yes / No Questions La estructura de una oración interrogativa cambia el orden de los elementos: Past Simple Verb to be Personal Pronoun verb ing Complement Was I he she it playing working cooking yesterday? when you arrived? Were we you they Figura 4. Estructura de oraciones interrogativas (Soars & Soars, 2001, p.142). Respuestas cortas Short answers La forma corta de contestar de manera afirmativa o negativa: Affirmative Yes, I he she was it Yes, we you were they Negative No, I he she wasn t it No, we you weren t they Figura 5. Estructura para respuestas cortas. 5
Reglas a seguir para agregar ing a los verbos Rules for adding _ing to verbs Para agregar correctamente la terminación _ing a los verbos partiendo de su forma básica para formar el pasado continuo, es necesario seguir una serie de reglas, las cuales se explican a continuación: If a verb ends in _ie, ie changes to y before the ending _ing (Murphy, 1994, p. 280). Si el verbo termina en _ ie, la _ie se cambiar por _y antes de agregar la terminación _ing. Verb Base form die, morir lie, mentir tie, amarrar Verb_ing dying lying tying Tabla1. Terminación _ing. She was dying. Ella estaba muriendo. Figura 5. Thank you, anonymous donor (Makelessnoise, 2008). The boy was tying his shoes. El niño estaba amarrando sus zapatos. Figura 6. Making bunny ears (Woodelywonderworks, 2008). 6
If a verb ends in _e, we leave out e before the ending _ing (Murphy, 1994, p. 281). Si el verbo termina en _e, se le quita la _e, y sólo se le agrega la terminación _ing. Ejemplos (Examples): Verb Base form Hope (desear) Smile (sonreir) Dance (bailar) Confuse (confundir) Verb_ing Hopping Smiling Dancing Confusing Tabla 2. Terminación _ing. I was dancing with my husband. Yo estaba bailando con mi marido. Figura 7. Beverly & Ryan's Wedding (Killingsworth, 2005). He was smiling to his mother. Él le estaba sonriendo a su mamá. Figura 8. Manon au piano [cropped] (Mouraux, 2005). / 7
Excepciones a la regla. (Exceptions to this rule.) Verb Base form Be (ser, estar) See (ver) Agree (concordar, estar de acuerdo) Verb_ing Being Seeing Agreeing Tabla 3. Terminación _ing: excepciones (Murphy, 1994). She was seeing a doctor. Ella estaba viendo a un doctor. Figura 9. USG 2 (Kobosz, 2005). The students were agreeing with their teacher. Los estudiantes estaban de acuerdo con el maestro. Figura 10. Manual communication (YosiI, 2007). 8
Sometimes a verb ends in vowel + consonant. We need to double the consonant at the end and add _ing (Murphy, 1994, p. 281). Algunas veces el verbo termina en vocal, seguida de una consonante. En este caso es necesario repetir la consonante y agregar la terminación _ing. Verb Base form Swim,(nadar) Get (obtener) Stop (detener) Plan (planear) Verb_ing Swimming Getting Stopping Planning Tabla 4. Terminación _ing duplicar consonante. The children were swimming in the lake. Los niños estaban nadando en el lago. Figura 11. Buddys.jpg (Taliesin, 2006). He was stopping the traffic. Él estaba deteniendo el tráfico. Figura 12.
