The subject approaches the city and the processes and urban dynamics more important which characterize to the Spanish society and to the advanced societies as "urban societies", doing it from a specifically sociological perspective. The course tries to offer to the students a rigorous, theoretical and practical vision, about the city and the urban processes, focussing on the Spanish case and comparing it with other advanced societies. Therefore, first, it presents the most relevant classic and contemporary theories of the Urban Sociology. Secondly, it emphasizes the most relevant changes of last fifty years as 1
2 the processes of suburbanization, gentrification, urban inequality and increasing multiculturalism, as well as to the critical analysis of the hegemonic urbanism. Thirdly, the principal theoretical approaches about the residential question and the sociological concept of living are approached. On this base the course presents, in fourth place, the residential Spanish model and the policies of housing and of the soil, its more relevant differences with other European societies, the reality separated from different population groups, the concepts of need and demand of housing, as well as several methodologies of analysis.in fifth place, the course presents the question of the town, its tools, and the urban equipments. It presents, sixthly, the specifically urban action of the different social actors, there being approached the social urban movements in Spain, from the 70s until today and the modalities, tools and evolution of the civic participation. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE Relationship to other subjects of the same degree There are no specified enrollment restrictions with other subjects of the curriculum. Other requirements Not required. While it is desirable to have a certain familiarity in the search for data on the network and a knowledge of the methods and techniques of social research. OUTCOMES Grado de Sociología - Students must have acquired knowledge and understanding in a specific field of study, on the basis of general secondary education and at a level that includes mainly knowledge drawn from advanced textbooks, but also some cutting-edge knowledge in their field of study. - Students must be able to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional manner and have acquired the competences required for the preparation and defence of arguments and for problem solving in their field of study. - Students must have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (usually in their field of study) to make judgements that take relevant social, scientific or ethical issues into consideration. - Students must be able to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to both expert and lay audiences. - Students must have developed the learning skills needed to undertake further study with a high degree of autonomy. 2
3 LEARNING OUTCOMES - Understand, describe and analyze the mechanisms of organization of urban space. - Identify and interpret the dynamics and spatial transformations of contemporary cities. - Differentiate the main actors involved in the construction of the city and analyze their interactions. - Analyze and evaluate plans and projects of urban intervention. - Relate elements of population, resources, technology and natural environment that affect thetransformation of space. - Manage data sources to facilitate research in the area of the city. - Identify, collect, process and interpret creatively relevant to the analysis of social processesand phenomena from various sources information. - Know how to transmit and communicate arguments in writing and orally using laterminología properlyand theoretical references of urban sociology and. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS 1. The city and the urban sociology. The city like object of study of the urban sociology. The sociologists of the city: to the School of Chicago from to the theories on the " global cities ". 2. Space and urban society To the industrial city from the post-industrial, of services and globalized city. The processes of suburbanization, gentrification, urban inequality and increasing multiculturalism. The hegemonic urbanism in last four decades and its critical analysis 3. Housing in the city: needs and demand The residential Spanish model, the policies of housing and of the soil, and the more relevant differences with other European societies. Modalities, instruments and evolution of the civic participation. WORKLOAD ACTIVITAT Hours % To be attended Theoretical and practical classes Attendance at events and external activities Development of group work Development of individual work Study and independent work Readings supplementary material Preparation of evaluation activities Preparing lectures Preparation of practical classes and problem TOTAL TEACHING METHODOLOGY The program will develop in different theoretical and practical sessions and there will be combined the educational presentations and the active work of the students. It will combine: a) Activities realized in the classroom: reading and debate of different texts and materials; oral presentations by the students; search specifically urban documentary and statistics; etc. b) An individual practice and a group practice, with previous readings and debates in class, about topics related to the program. c) Individual elaboration of project of research about an urban problematics of the concrete reality of the city of Valencia and / or the Valencia Land. The works and the activities will be commented and orientated by specific directives and follow-up will be done, in class and in tutorship. The practices are not recoverable provided that they are anintegral learning process based on the collective work in the classroom. 4
5 EVALUATION The result of the evaluation will proceed so much of the examination, since of the diverse activities and works. The examination will suppose 40 % of the final qualification and it tries to value the level of knowledge, the systematizing of these, the capacity of analysis, integration and explanation, about the contents been employed at the course.the activities will suppose 60 % of the final note and ittries to value the learning process along the development of the course. This 60 % is distributed in: 10 % activities realized in the classroom; 10 % individual practice; 15 % group practice; 15 % individual research project. The students who do not obtain the pass of the subject in the first summons, they will support the note obtained in practices in the second summons.
