1 October 5, 2012 Waco Independent School District Cesar Chavez Middle School Dear Parent/Guardian, Help your child succeed in school sign up for FREE tutoring! This is a great opportunity to help your child without any cost to you. As a result of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, your child can receive FREE Supplemental Educational Services (SES) to help him or her do better in school. You may choose a free tutoring program that best meets the needs of your child from the list of approved tutoring programs in your area. These programs, approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), will provide your child with tutoring that is individually designed to help improve your child s academic skills. In the event the number of requests for free tutoring exceeds the amount of money the district has to pay to provide this service, the district must set priorities to determine which eligible students will receive the free SES tutoring. If this should occur, the district will have to implement the following criteria to determine student eligibility: Students on free/reduced lunch are eligible for SES and the following criteria will be used to prioritize services. Tier 1: Any student who scored below the state average on the STAAR test in reading, math, or science. Tier 2: Students who scored at the state average or above on the STAAR tests.

2 Why sign up for free tutoring? Research from the federal government has shown that students who participated in this free tutoring program made significant gains in student achievement, and those students who participated in multiple years did even better. At what times can my child receive free tutoring? You decide before school, after school, during school holidays or vacation breaks, during the summer and/or during non-instructional time at middle schools and high schools (for example: off periods, study hall, etc). Who will provide my child s free SES tutoring? You decide attached is a list of SES tutors servicing our geographical area. Need Help Deciding? When choosing a tutoring program that best meets the needs of your child, you may want to consider the following questions: What subject does my child need tutoring in: Math, Reading/Language Arts, and/or Science? What type of instruction will the tutor use (small group, one-on-one, or the computer)? When and where will the tutoring take place (at school, at home, or at a community center)? Is transportation available to and from the location where the tutoring will take place? How often and for how many total hours will my child be tutored? What are the tutors qualifications? Can the tutor help if my child has a learning disability or is learning English? SES Sign-up! Esta es una gran oportunidad para ayudar a su hijo/a en la escuela sin ningún costo a Usted. Como resultado del acto federal, Que Ningún Niño Se Quede Atrás, su hijo/a puede recibir tutoría de servicios educativos suplementarios (SES) GRATIS para ayudarle a mejorar en la escuela. Usted puede elegir un programa de tutoría gratuita que se ajuste mejor a las necesidades de su hijo/a de la lista de los programas de tutoría en su área. Estos programas, aprobadas por la Agencia de Educación de Texas (TEA), proporcionará a su hijo/a con la tutoría diseñada individualmente para mejorar las habilidades académicas de su hijo/a. En el caso de que el número de solicitudes para esta tutoría gratuita supere los fondos que el distrito tiene disponible para pagar por estos servicios, el distrito necesita establecer prioridades para determinar cuáles de los estudiantes elegibles recibirán tutoría SES gratis. Si esto ocurre, el distrito tendrá que aplicar sus criterios de prioridad, y usaremos los criterios siguientes para determinar elegibilidad de los estudiantes: Los estudiantes con el almuerzo gratis/reducido son elegibles para SES y los siguientes criterios se utilizarán para priorizar los servicios. Nivel 1: Cualquier estudiante que obtuvo resultados por debajo del promedio estatal en el examen de STAAR en lectura, matemáticas o ciencias. Nivel 2: Los estudiantes que obtuvieron un resultado igual al promedio estatal o mejor en las pruebas STAAR. Por qué inscribirse para tutoría gratis? Investigaciones del gobierno federal han demostrado que los estudiantes que participaron en este programa de tutoría gratuita realizaron importantes avances académicos y los estudiantes que participaron en varios años lograron aun mejor. Necesita ayuda para decidirse? Al decidir el programa de tutoría que es mejor para su hijo/a, el sistema de inscripción por el internet le hará preguntas para asistirles en su selección. Puede considerar lo siguiente antes de inscribir su estudiante: En qué tema necesita ayuda mi niño/a: matemáticas, lectura/artes de lenguaje, y/o ciencia? Qué tipo de instrucción usará el tutor (pequeño grupo, uno a uno, o la computadora)? Cuándo y dónde se llevará a cabo la enseñanza (en la escuela, el hogar, un centro comunitario)? Hay transporte disponible desde y hacia el lugar donde se llevará a cabo la tutoría? Con qué frecuencia y por cuantas horas en total recibirá su hijo/a los tutelados?
