2 Father s January 27 ABCD Message! Congratulations and many thanks for your very generous donations thus far to the 2013 ABCD Drive! Your pledges from last weekend and before have set us well on our way to meeting this year s goal of $260,000! Although the amount of our goal appears challenging, it is one that I am certain we can meet and perhaps surpass! As I explained in the Masses last weekend, the ABCD Drive stems from an ancient Christian tradition dating back to Christ himself. The bishops, who as direct descendants of the Apostles inherit Christ s mandate to spread the gospel message and assist the poor, carry out in their respective dioceses these campaigns to assist the less fortunate and ensure the development of the propagation of the faith. Moreover, just as the early Christians were summoned to cooperate in these efforts under the supervision of the Apostles, so too are we under the supervision of our local shepherds. At the Masses last weekend I proposed a strategy that will help us meet our goal. It is a strategy that is based on giving intelligently and in a spirit of simplicity. It is based on the following: The $1.00 approach! Most of us throw away at least $1.00 a day on trivialities. If all of us commit to simply donating at least $1.00 a day to the ABCD (a donation of $365 a year), we easily surpass this year s goal with room to spare! If morally you know that you can afford to give more than this amount I encourage you to prayerfully discern what it is the Lord may be calling you to reasonably give. The great news is that whatever we provide above and beyond our goal the Archbishop automatically allocates to us to assist our parish needs! Therefore, if we approach the ABCD Drive smartly, we exercise charity in the local South Florida community as well as at home in our parish! One of the proud trademarks of Our Lady of the Lakes Church is that we have always been a very generous community. We have certainly been so with the ABCD Drive as we have consistently met our annual goal. I have great confidence that we can once again do this. As always, I thank you for your generosity and support. May we continue to exceptionally work towards this year s goal! Mensaje del 27 de Enero del Padre Sobre el ABCD! Felicitaciones y muchas gracias por sus generosas donaciones hasta el momento a la campaña ABCD 2013! Sus promesas del fin de semana pasado y de semanas anteriores nos han encaminado a cumplir la meta de este año de $260,000! A pesar de que la cantidad de nuestro objetivo parece difícil, estoy seguro que podremos llegar a ella y tal vez superarla! Como explique en las misas del fin de semana pasado, la campaña del ABCD proviene de una antigua tradición Cristiana que data a la época de Cristo. Los obispos, que como descendientes directos de los Apóstoles heredan el mandato de Cristo para propagar el mensaje del evangelio y ayudar a los pobres, por lo que llevan a cabo en sus respectivas diócesis estas campañas para ayudar a los menos afortunados y garantizar el desarrollo de la propagación de la fe. Al igual que los primeros cristianos fueron llamados a cooperar en estos esfuerzos bajo la supervisión de los Apóstoles, también nosotros estamos bajo la supervisión de nuestros pastores locales. Durante las misas del fin de semana pasado, propuse una estrategia para ayudarnos a alcanzar nuestra meta. El enfoque de $1.00! La mayoría de nosotros usamos por lo menos $1.00 al día en trivialidades. Si todos nos comprometemos a simplemente donar al menos $1.00 por día para la campaña del ABCD (una donación de $365 al año), pudiéramos superar con creces la meta de este año, con espacio de sobra! Por lo tanto, si nos acercamos a la Campaña del ABCD inteligentemente, ejercemos la caridad en la comunidad local del sur de la Florida, así como en nuestra parroquia. Una de las características de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Lagos, es que siempre hemos sido una comunidad muy generosa. Sin duda, hemos sido así con la campaña del ABCD al siempre cumplir nuestro objetivo anual. Confío que podamos cumplir con este objetivo nuevamente. Como siempre, gracias por su generosidad y apoyo y espero que nuevamente respondamos excepcionalmente a la campaña del ABCD!

3 Follow-Up to Commitment Weekend If you have not yet made your sacrificial pledge to support the ABCD, today provides an opportunity to do so. Faith expands our hearts in hope. As Pope Benedict XVI says in his Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei, Faith grows when it is lived as an experience of love received and when it is communicated as an experience of grace and joy. Faith without charity bears no fruit, while charity without faith would be a sentiment constantly at the mercy of doubt. Faith and charity each require the other. We ask that you join us in making a pledge to this year s ABCD 2013 and make a difference in the lives of brothers and sisters in need, so that together, we can be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. Seguimiento al Fin de Semana de Compromiso Si usted todavía no ha hecho su compromiso de sacrificio para apoyar al ABCD, en el día de hoy tiene la oportunidad de hacerlo. La Fe expande nuestros corazones en Esperanza. La Fe sin la Caridad no da fruto, mientras que la Caridad sin la Fe sería un sentimiento constantemente a merced de la duda. La Fe y la Caridad, cada una requiere de la otra. Les pedimos que se unan a nosotros para hacer una promesa al ABCD de este año y para dejar una huella transformadora en las vidas de nuestros hermanos y hermanas necesitados, obrando Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza, Unidos en la Caridad.

Theme: Catholic Schools: Raising Our Hearts, Minds, and Service to God Each day we will be focusing on a different aspect of our Catholic school education. January 25: 9:15 A.M. Introduction to the theme and the following week s activities (Teacher-led Mass) Throughout the week we will have a band aid collection as we Band Together to Serve Others. Band aids will be given to local children s hospital. January 28: As students in a Catholic school, Our Future Is Bright Students may wear neon or bright accessories with school uniform to show their future is bright because they are students in a Catholic school. January 29: Caring Hearts Each grade will be paired with another to complete/share an activity. The activity/event is to be decided by the teachers. January 30: Brilliant Minds There will be an Academic Bowl for students in grades 6 through 8. It will be at 9:30 A.M. in the gym. Students in the lower grades will receive Smarties courtesy of Student Council. This is also our 100 th day of school celebration. January 31: Serving Hands Candy Sale during all lunches sponsored by Student Council. Proceeds go to charity. February 1: Show Your School Spirit School Spirit Day/Field Day for grades PK-8 and Yellow vs. Blue Grade 8 Basketball Game. Students may dress down in PE shorts and yellow or blue shirt (color will be assigned to students) to show school spirit. Field day activities and grade 8 basketball game will be played.
