GRAMMAR III Familiar commands (tú). A. Regular commands: The command forms, or imperatives, are used to give an order or a request. The forms for affirmative commands are diff erent from those for negative commands. l. Affirmative commands. The form is identical to the third person singular of the Present Indicative hablar/habla; comer/ come; escribir/escribe. Ex.: Trae el libro de ejercicios. (bring the exercise book) 2. Negative commands. Verbs ending in -AR take the ending -es, and verbs ending in -ER, -IR take the ending -as. A negative word is needed in front of the verb. Ex.: No hables tanto. (don't talk so much) No comas esa ensalada. (don't eat that salad) B. Irregular commands: l. All stem-changing verbs contain the same change in the command forms as in the Present Indicative. Ex.: volver/vuelve/no vuelvas; pedir/pide/no pidas; pensar/piensa/no pienses; dormir/duerme/no duermas 2. Most verbs that are irregular in the first person of the Present Indicative show the same irregularity in the negative command forms: salir/salgo/no salgas conocer/conozco/no conozcas decir/digo/no digas tener/tengo/no tengas oír/oigo/no oigas huir/huyo/no huyas
6. A few verbs are irregular in the affirmative command forms because they show no ending. For example, venir/ ; tener/ ; salir! 7. The word di is two different things in Spanish: (1) the Preterite ofthe verb dar, when it means, and (2) the familiar affirmative command form of decir, when it means. Di never has a written accent. 8. Sé is also two different things: (1) the present indicative of saber, when it means, and (2) the familiar affirmative command form of ser, when it means, In both cases sé needs a written accent. 9. The unstressed pronouns, such as me, te, le, nos, follow the commands, but precede the commands. For example, to translate Call me we say , and Don't call me we say No 10. Compound verbs follow the same changes as simple verbs. Ifthe command form of poner is pon, the command form of exponer is (it needs an accent!). 11. If the command form of tener is ten, the command form of mantener is (it needs an accent!). EXERCISES A. Change the following statements to familiar affirmative commands. Example: Carlos me llama esta noche. Carlos, llámame esta noche. l. Ana viene conmigo a la fiesta. 2. Lola me habla en español. 3. Luis me escribe a menudo. 4. José me dice la verdad. 5. Marcos me hace un favor.
4. Me lavo las manos? 5. Le pido el carro a papá? 6. Le digo la verdad a tu amiga? 7. Tomo las pastillas ahora? D. Change these familiar commands from affirmative to negative, and vice versa. Examples: Llámame. No me llames. No lo comas. Cómelo. l. Siéntate aquí. 2. Dame la cuenta ahora, 3. Háblame siempre en español. 4. Dímelo todo. 5. Arréglate el pelo, 6. Bébete el café. 7. No te lo tomes todo, 8. No la llames temprano. 9. No te vistas ahora. 10. No lo toques, por favor. 11. No lo empieces mañana. 12. No te lleves el carro.
6. Esteban me oye bien, 7. Luisa sale temprano hoy. 8. Felipe se lava las manos. 9. Carlitos se duerme pronto. B. Now change these statements to familiar negative commands. l. Luisa no llega tarde. 2. Guillermo no dice nada. 3. José no me llama hoy. 4. Lolita no se lava las manos. 5. Jorge se sienta aquí. 6. Julia no hace eso. 7. María no me hace un favor. 8. Carlos no deshace la maleta. 9. Anita no me lo compra. 10. Lucía no lo propone. 11. Mario no se duerme. 12. Marcos no se despierta. C. Answer the questions, first affirmatively and then negatively, substitute object pronouns wherever possible. Example: Preparo la comida? prepárala no la prepares. l. Contesto el teléfono? 2. Lleno esta receta? 3. Traigo a mi amiga Luisa?
3. Here are eight verbs that are irregular because they either drop the ending completely in the affirmative commands, or they take strange forms (see saber): venir/ven/no vengas tener/ten/no tengas hacer/haz/no hagas decir/di/no digas poner/pon/no pongas salir/sal/no salgas ser/sé/no seas saber/sabe/no sepas C. Unstressed pronouns with command forms: The unstressed pronouns me, lo, la, te, etc., follow the affirmative commands and precede the negative commands. Ex.: Llámame. (call me)/no me llames. (don't call me) Dímelo. (tell it to me)/no me lo digas. (don't tell it to me) PRACTICE THE FAMILIAR COMMAND FORMS l. We use the command forms (sometimes called imperative) to give a direct order. There are two kinds of commands: the formal command, addressed to usted, and the familiar command, addressed to---- We will cover the formal command forms in the next lesson. 2. The affirmative command forms are the same as the third-person forms of the Present, For example, hablar/ comer/ 3. The verbs ending in -AR need the ending for a negative command, and all the other verbs need the ending, For example, hablar/no ; escribir/no. Remember that a negative word is needed before the verb. 4. Stem-changing verbs show the same changes in the command forms as in the Present, For example, dormir/duerme/no 5. Most verbs that are irregular in the first person of the Present Indica ti ve show the same irregularity in the command form. For example, salir/salgo/no traer/traigo/no
