3 iii ASTRACT Mikel Kuehn, Advisor Ούροβόρος a single-movement, ourteen-minute work scored or lute, alto lute, -lat clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), bassoon, horn, -lat trumet (doubling -lat lugelhorn), bass trombone, three ercussionists, har, iano, violin, viola, violoncello, and contrabass is a work that lacks melodies, motives, clear harmonic shits, erceivable changes in dynamics and timbre, audible articulations, and a discernible ulse Every element o this comosition was inormed by some asect o the mythical serent ouroboros At the broadest level, Ούροβόρος ollows a single, rocessed-based orm This gesture consists o several subsections that are simultaneously transormed by various rocesses: registral and dynamic wedges, a timbral rondo, and an exonential accelerando The algorithms used to develo the material also rogressed in a cyclical ashion, terminating in the same way that they began The harmonic rogression, which unctions as one giant sequence, is derived rom the hexachord 6-25[013568] and transormations that share at least our common tones These harmonic materials were arranged across itch-sace in the ramework o an ouroboros beginning with a hexachord sanning seven octaves, reducing to a single note, and smoothly sreading back to the ully exanded hexachord In order to roduce many dierent sonorities, both new and amiliar, I develoed multi-layered orchestrations that cycle at dierent rates and are slightly transormed with each reiteration While inner layers were orchestrated with systematic rocesses to transorm between rimary and secondary orchestral choirs, the surace orchestration shited slowly between dark and light timbres In addition, individual itches were orchestrated by two dissimilar instruments that articulated to and rom niente To urther uniy these disarate timbres, the maority o the work was written at dynamic levels less than mezzo iano; this also heled acilitate the execution o the unusually long sustained tones which constitute this work y ully integrating the single idea o a mythical serent and alying it abstractly or mathematically into almost every asect o comosition, I have guaranteed my comosition is ully uniied both concetually and musically
