1 BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL! Advanced Placement Spanish Literature and Culture Syllabus Course Overview AP Spanish Literature is an advanced Spanish class that surveys Peninsular and Latin American literature from the Middle Ages to today. It is the equivalent of an upper-division college course and serves as an introduction to literary analysis and discussion of Spanishlanguage literature. Beyond developing reading comprehension, students will be actively engaged with text, understand the context in which it was written, think critically about its themes and greater message, and analyze the author s craft. The class is conducted almost exclusively in Spanish and students will learn the terminology and academic language to discuss content, structure, theme, character development, and figurative language. They will also write interpretive and analytical compositions and work to develop their academic writing skills in Spanish. The primary goal for the class is that students enjoy reading the classics of Spanishlanguage literature and develop their autonomy in reading on all levels. Readings will be of unabridged versions of the literary works on the Advanced Placement reading list. By May, students will have read all the works from the reading list in preparation for the Advanced Placement Spanish Literature and Culture exam. Grading by percentage = A = B = C = D = F * Exams and Quizzes are worth 50 % of the grade * Assignments and participation are worth 40% of the grade * Semester Exam is worth 10% of the grade Homework, Absences, and Late work * Homework is due at the beginning of class the following school day * Excused absences have 2 days to turn in missed assignments * Late work loses 10% a day Expectations Be respectful, positive, and supportive of others Study and review the vocabulary a few minutes every day Ask questions! I am also available before and after school. Extra Credit Two extra credit assignments are available per semester One for five points that is applied to the exam scores and one for ten points that is applied to the homework scores. Attend Spanish Mass Incorporate your knowledge of Spanish in a service project Investigate an area of Spanish that interests you, create a project to present to the class

2 The class is conducted almost exclusively in Spanish and students are encouraged to do the same. Summer reading list Read 14 on-line news articles and complete the summer work assignment sheet. Vocabulary lists Create four lists throughout the year of 50 new vocabulary words that you have learned outside the of the lists provided by Mr. LeBrun Literary summaries Create a summary of each literary work. Include: title of work, author, genre (sub-genre), plot, characters, themes, quote, literary techniques, and essential question and answer. Summaries are collected quarterly. List of literary terms Literary terms must be understood to understand course concepts and to succeed on the AP exam. Music Presentations Each student will select a contemporary Spanish music artist and song to present to the class. Students will present the music with a Power-point for the class with the Spanish lyrics. Five literary terms will be pointed out in the music. This will help students develop listening skills that are required for the AP exam. Art Presentations Each student will select a Hispanic artist to present biographical information on. Then, 3-5 works will be displayed and explained along with their connection to an art movement. This will help students on the art comparison portion of the AP Exam. Themes 1. 6 For a deeper understanding of Quevedo s concept of memento mori, students will do research on the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and look at Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg s 1796 painting. 4. Students will compare the song to Guillén s text using a Venn diagram. Additionally, students will research the traffic of African slaves during the 16th century. All findings will be presented orally. Postreading: Discussion: La mezcla de tres culturas en Cuba Activity: Students will do research on the artistic phenomenon known as Pintura de Castas by Miguel Cabrera in New Spain during the 18th century and discuss images depicted by the author as they compare with the poetic images presented in Guillén s poem Balada de los dos abuelos. After the discussion, students will present their findings to the class. 32. La creación literaria will be introduced by watching scenes from the production of Don Quixote with the Ballet Nacional de Cuba (2007). The creative process of this artistic adaptation will be discussed. 37.
