1 AP Spanish Literature and Culture Syllabus Contact Brieana Thatcher srtathatcher.wordpress.com Course Overview This two- semester course offers a survey of Peninsular and Latin American literature from the Middle Ages to present day. The main objectives are to expand students knowledge of Spanish literature and culture and to perform successfully on the Advanced Placement Test in Spanish Literature. We achieve these objectives by reading the entire list of selected texts from the AP Spanish Literature exam, as well as by targeting the six themes and exploring subthemes related to each literary piece. Students receive varied opportunities to further develop proficiencies across the full range of language skills with special attention to critical reading and analytical writing. Students will read and analyze representative works of poetry, prose, and drama, and will reflect on the many voices and cultures included in a rich and diverse body of literature written in Spanish. The works are presented in chronological order allowing for integrating of historical themes and literary movements of different time periods. Context is carefully considered, including schools of literature to which each piece belongs, as well as the author s style and characteristics of each selection. In conjunction with supplementary materials and resources, the main text, Azulejo, 2nd Ed., provides students with the socio- cultural context necessary to fully understand each text in its unabridged (original) version. Requiring frequent essays and participation in class discussions conducted entirely in Spanish, students will enhance their ability to acquire, identify, understand, discuss, interpret and analyze the form and content of literary works along with the literary terms and conceptual aspects of art and history of the time of study. Course content and lessons are organized to help students interpret figures of speech, tone, genre, style, characters, themes, and literary symbols through a variety of methods ranging from cooperative learning activities, integrating of visual elements and technology, interpretive tasks, individual projects, and practice timed- writing sessions al estilo AP. Course Objectives The objectives of this course are to: 1. Foster a deeper understanding of the Spanish- speaking world through the study of its culture as reflected in literature. 2. Learn the techniques of literary analysis and a working vocabulary of literary terms in Spanish. 3. Expand students knowledge of major literary movements, genres, periods, authors, and works. 4. Understand, analyze, discuss, and compare major pieces of Spanish literature as well as other art forms from the Middle Ages to present day. 5. Enhance students ability to write well structured, analytical, and critical essays in Spanish that demonstrate their comprehension of the works read. 6. Expand students vocabulary and refine reading and listening comprehension, as well as overall writing proficiency in Spanish.
2 7. Integrate the three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational) through practice and performance activities offered both in and outside of the classroom. 8. Utilize technology to expand our comprehension, classroom communication, and analysis of major works, through access to other cultural products such as photography, plastic arts, film, audio clips and interviews, etc., comparing the voices in these products to literary voices studied. 9. Address the six required themes (as well as subthemes) through our study of each literary piece: a. La creación literaria: la intertextualidad, la literatura autoconsciente, el proceso creativo, el texto y sus contextos As a result, students will be prepared to take the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam by the spring test date in May. The following procedures and activities have been set in place and designed to obtain the outlined objectives. Students are presented with the six overarching themes and subthemes presented in the AP Spanish Literature Framework and work to make several levels of connections with each studied text in order to develop a deeper understanding of the readings. After establishing essential questions and readings as outlined by the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam, students participate in group- projects, analyze pieces and make connections between pieces, time periods, and themes along with a variety of subthemes. Students give periodic individual and small group oral presentations about diverse themes related to readings, including opportunities to examine cultures of the countries whose literature we study. Students experience auditory activities about literary creation including but not limited to interviews, poems, songs, and film. Timed essays are written in class, as well as take- home essays using writing prompts similar to those of the AP Spanish Literature Exam. These essays will consist of: Poetry Analysis, Thematic Analysis (analysis, compare and contrast) and Text Analysis (short answers to open- ended questions, analysis of critical commentary). The AP scoring guidelines and rubric are reviewed and utilized in the evaluation (and peer editing) of student writing, paying special attention to organization, content, historical connections, as well as analysis and language usage. A reading log is maintained wherein students keep track of significant quotes and reactions from readings, as well as summaries of main events and characters and resulting questions for the class.
3 Literary terms and rhetorical devices are mastered through a variety of activities, practices, and systems used so that students are able make explicit connections between devices and the overall themes represented in the text. Students recognize and explore the relationship between the author s use of devices and the overarching message he or she intends to convey. Readings are continuously compared and contrasted by theme, historical context, and artistic representations to help develop an analytical understanding of Spanish literature over time. Teaching Strategies 1. Pre- reading support activities to help the students place the readings in the appropriate historical, cultural, and psychological context. For example, using titles and subdivisions within the text to predict content and organization; looking at pictures, maps, diagrams, PowerPoint presentations; talking about the author s background, usual topics and style; skimming the text to find the main idea; using students prior knowledge; learning pertinent vocabulary; self- questioning, etc. 2. During- reading strategies to help students focus on what the author is saying: graphic organizers aid students in organizing their thoughts and in comprehension processes; story maps and cooperative learning activities help to learn from one another interactively; diary logs, reading circles, and Socratic Seminars deepen analysis and comprehension. 3. After reading strategies to help students look back at what they have read, think about the message, and analyze / draw conclusions. For example, drawings or dramatizations of some of the texts, compare and contrast essays, question circles, debates, and visual gallery walks. 4. All readings are followed by a series of questions to enhance comprehension and analysis. 5. All essays are self and peer edited and will be graded using the AP Scoring Guidelines. 6. Organization of materials and ideas maintained through the use of a reading log, classroom binder and dividers (for time periods), and the creation of an Síntesis de obra literaria after every reading for student binder and final portfolio review / presentation. Student assessment & Grading Interpretación Auditiva 10% (based on in- class listening exercises modeling AP exam) Interpretación de Lectura 35% (notebook: reading + vocabulary log, assigned class act., comp. quizzes) Producción Escrita 35% (based on formal in- class writing prompts and practice AP exams) Producción Oral 20% (project presentations, participation in daily discussions, Soc. Seminars) *Semester Exams will include literary texts discussed and their corresponding themes, the elements of literary analysis studied as well as the author, historical and sociocultural contexts of each piece. These exams will include a listening section, reading and multiple- choice section, and a writing section (as modeled after the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam). This exam will be divided by section into the grading categories as listed above and as evaluated on the AP exam: interpretive (reading / listening), and writing (literary analysis: short and long response essays).
