2 What is Community Service Learning? Service Learning at Western aims to connect classroom with community in a way that is mutually beneficial to all participants: students, faculty, and community partners. We believe the community can contribute in multiple and meaningful ways to student learning objectives. In addition, Western students can contribute knowledge and skills toward developing sustainable solutions for community-identified needs. At Western, we provide a variety of experiential learning opportunities that give students important opportunities for practical application of classroom learning. CSL courses offer additional benefits to students such as increased sense of civic engagement and the chance for their academic work to make a positive impact in local and global communities. (

4 Evaluación Participation in CSL-Cuba counts for 20% of the final mark in Spanish. For Spanish 2200 is substitutes the labs, and in 3300, the final project. Mark breakdown: 2 Reflective blog posts. 6% 1 Daily trip work log.. 3% 1 Oral presentation 7% Community parteners evaluation... 4%

5 CSL in Cuba For students enrolled in Spanish 2200 and 3300 Takes place in the city of Holguín Students stay in small groups in rental homes Students work with community partners in places such as: a farm, a retirement home and a home for blind children. Students also get the opportunity to get to know students at the University of Holguín

9 The community experience: A lo largo de mi estancia en Cuba hablé con los cubanos todos los días, que me ayudó a tener más fluidez en hablar español. Cada día, se nos pidió escribir dos nuevas palabras en español, lo que amplió mi vocabulario. Una de mis experiencias favoritas en Cuba fue que tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar la Universidad de Holguín. (Jasmine, CSL en Cuba, 2013) Trabajando al lado de mis nuevos amigos cubanos como este programa manda aprendimos mucho acerca de la vida y cultura de ellos aprendimos mucho acerca de lo que es ser cubano pero tal vez, lo más importante es que yo, al igual que mis compañeros canadienses, aprendimos mucho acerca de nosotros mismos sobre nuestras vidas y el tipo de personas que somos y algún día quisiéramos llegar a ser en relación a nuestra responsabilidad como habitantes de un solo mundo. 10 The language experience: En Cuba, hablé (o trató de hablar) español todos los días. Fue muy difícil para mí expresar, porque no podía decir exactamente lo que yo estaba pensando. Al final de la semana me di cuenta de que estaba empezando a pensar en español (Vanessa, CSL en Cuba, 2013) Me siento que mi español mejoró en Cuba también. Estuve nervioso a hablar en el comienzo de la semana. Cuando nosotros hablamos con los estudiantes en la Universidad de Holguín, estuve nervioso también. Al primero, pensé que hablé, lo siento porque mi español es muy mal mucho. Pero, cuando hablé más con los cubanos y mis compañeros, me sentí más confidente.

21 Cost: $350 to participate in the program. This includes food and accommodation. + Airfare (this will be organized through Western to get the best possible price) All together, the cost will be approximately $1000 A non-refundable deposit of $50 must be provided upon registration (by Oct. 15)

22 For more information Thursday, September 26 there will be an information session about CSL opportunities for Spanish students: 6pm CSL - London, 7pm CSL Cuba in UC 220 The deadine to register for CSL is Oct. 15. For students participating in Cuba, a $50 deposit must be provided by this date.
