Please support the charities of the Knights of Columbus! A TOWER OF FAITH: IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH ASTORIA: THE NINTH DECADE: 2004-2014 Having served as Pastor since 1986, Monsignor Charles P. Boccio retired in January, 2008. To his delight, Monsignor Fernando Ferrarese, an altar server at Msgr. Boccio's first Mass, was appointed as his successor! On April 5, 2008, Bishop Nicholas Di Marzio installed Monsignor Ferrarese as the Sixth Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish. With Monsignor Ferrarese s installation more positive changes have come to Immaculate Conception Parish. As guided by The New Evangelization Process, Immaculate Conception Church of Astoria created its Parish Council in June 2008. The process was welcomed by the parish and this was evidenced by our total commitment to all phases of the Plan: the discernment process, one-on-one interviews, orientation session, parish assembly, implementer selection, and the successful realization of action steps such as Youth 2000, which was a resounding achievement. In March, 2010 The Youth 2000 Weekend Retreat was held at Immaculate Conception School. Facilitated by The Friars of Renewal, over 200 youth participated in this event. The parish support was tremendous and wellcoordinated. From this event, a core group which is currently part of The Immaculate Conception Youth Council emerged. A weekly Youth Mass is now celebrated each Sunday at Noon in The Lower Church. Adult Faith Formation has become a priority. After a series of information sessions, parishioners of Immaculate Conception were invited to join The Pastoral Institute Lay Ministry Program. A three-year program that prepares pastoral leaders to serve as volunteer team members or coordinators for a particular ministry. Classes in English and Spanish start each September at locations throughout the Diocese. From Autumn 2010 until Spring 2012, The Pastoral Lay Ministry Program was held in The Nazareth Center. Several parishioners of Immaculate Conception Parish have been commissioned as Lay Pastoral Leaders and now serve the Church in many diverse roles including RCIA team members, youth ministers, coordinators of parish outreach, bereavement ministers, communications, and many other positions. Open to all, the annual free Fall and Spring Film Festivals draw many visitors to our parish. Sponsored by both The Sacred Heart Institute and The Office of Faith Formation, Catholic educators and members of the clergy earn academic credits by attending these film festivals. Also, in the Spirit of Ecumenism, informative lecture series have been held by recognized theologians sharing their knowledge of Judaism, Islam and Orthodox faiths.

Our expanded Music Ministry now includes The St. Cecilia Consortium which provides opportunities for the different choirs of Immaculate Conception to produce musical experiences on a larger integrated scale. The Dorothy Day Social Action Group works with Faith in New York, an interfaith organization, to address community issues and concerns. Multi-cultural and diverse! Immaculate Conception Parish continues to maintain the vibrancy of an active, thriving Roman Catholic Community. We are looking forward to our future with bright hope and expectancy. As proclaimed in our Parish Mission Statement, "Following the example of Mary, our patroness, we hope to grow in peace and unity, strengthen the bonds which unite us and proclaim the kingdom of God in all that we do." THIS WEEK S TRIVIA QUESTION When was the construction of the Church s current building fully completed? LAST WEEK S ANSWER What is found in the yard on the Chapel side of the Church?
