v o l u m e 2 2 0 0 7 TWO UNIQUE HAWAIIAN ICONS FUMIGATED WITH VIKANE GAS FUMIGANT Proven Performance. Superior Support. The Hokule a ship and the Waikiki Shell are not typical fumigation sites, even for Hawaii, but professional fumigation companies took on the challenge to eliminate termites with Vikane gas fumigant in both. Hokule a ship Hokule a, a full-scale replica of a wooden ancient voyaging canoe, was fumigated with Vikane gas fumigant to eliminate an extensive drywood termite infestation. Built in 1975 by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Hokule a is the only voyaging canoe to be built in more than 600 years, when the ancient Polynesians used such craft to navigate the Pacific Ocean. An important icon to Hawaiian culture, Hokule a has been taken on 10 voyages, all using ancient celestial navigation techniques. Later this year, the Polynesian Voyaging Society plans to sail Hokule a to Micronesia and Japan. While the ship was dry-docked at a marine training center, Chemi-Pure Termite & Pest Control was called upon to complete the important fumigation. Because of the historical significance of the ship, the company volunteered its services and Dow AgroSciences donated the Vikane needed for the fumigation. Fumigating Hokule a was an honor for our crew, said Gen Nishimura, president of Chemi-Pure. Fumigation with Vikane eliminated the drywood termite problem and preserved a piece of Hawaiian history. Because of the thick lamination on the wood, the Chemi-Pure crew decided to increase the dosage of Vikane to ensure the fumigant would penetrate the wood to kill all the drywood termites in the allocated exposure time. In addition, other unique factors needed to be taken into consideration for the job, such as the cabins or voids in the floor of the ship where people sleep. These areas were thoroughly inspected to ensure no animals or people were inside prior to fumigation. Nishimura stated that the fumigation was a great success completed on schedule, with the drywood termite problem completely eliminated. Everyone involved was pleased with the outcome of the fumigation, Nishimura stated. With the generosity of Dow AgroSciences, we are proud to have been able to donate our services. 2 Two Unique Hawaiian Icons Fumigated continued from page 1 Waikiki Shell Built in the 1950s, Honolulu s Waikiki Shell is a unique venue for outdoor concerts and other public gatherings. This historical landmark gets its name from its shell-like appearance it resembles the Hollywood Bowl, with a huge, dome-shaped roof. The outdoor concert hall can seat 2,400 people, and the lawn area has the capacity for an additional 6,000 patrons. The Waikiki Shell is home to the famous Kodak Hula Show, a Hawaiian tradition since 1937. The show is a historical look at the islands through the beauty of the hula performed by native dancers. More than 17 million visitors have enjoyed this unique show over the past 70 years. While repairing water damage to the roof, termite damage was discovered and an inspection was immediately scheduled. The inspector noted a huge aerial termite nest extending from one end of the Shell to

3 the other along with extensive visible termite damage throughout the structure. It was evident that termites had been eating away at the venue for more than 10 years. An emergency contract was ordered, and Kama aina Termite was chosen for the challenging job. The management chose fumigation to rapidly eradicate the termites from the unique structure. Due to the nature of business at the Waikiki Shell, we only had three days to plan and execute the fumigation, said Mike Miske, owner of Kama aina Termite. The biggest challenges to take into account were the crew s safety, the odd shape of the structure, and the strong tropical winds. The structure s eight-story height and unique design, with steep sides, made securing the tarps extremely difficult. While all technicians were secured with safety harnesses; boom lifts were used to raise them to the top of the structure. Each step of the process was handled with tremendous caution. Such an eye-catching fumigation drew the attention of local television stations and newspapers. Because of the local significance of the Waikiki Shell, many residents were concerned about the fumigation. However, citizens were confident that we would handle the project carefully, Miske explained. After 48 hours of exposure, the fumigation was a great success. When the tarps were removed, dead termites were literally falling from the rafters to the ground below. The huge aerial nest was removed. In the end, another Hawaiian icon was preserved through fumigation with Vikane gas fumigant. Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC. Vikane is a federally Restricted Use Pesticide. 4 WHAT WOULD YOU DO A customer calls to complain of tarnished silver and brass objects in the formal dining room of his or her home that you fumigated. From the description, it sounds like a possible fog-out. What would you do? First, contact your account representative from Dow AgroSciences for expert advice on what to look for and what to do. Vikane gas fumigant representatives and distributor representatives are trained and experienced in all aspects of wholestructure fumigation. Their assistance in analyzing potential fog-outs is dependent upon availability of accurate fumigation logs of each fumigation you perform. Fumigation logs should include: the number of introduction sites and fans used; More and more prospective and current customers are surfing the World Wide Web for information these days. Does your company have a Web site? From 1995 to 2006, the percentage of adult Internet users in the United States jumped from about 13 percent to nearly 75 percent. Additionally, 80 percent of Internet users today expect to find the information they are looking for online. 1 The URL of your Web site, or its www address, should be a name that your customers can easily relate to and remember. For example, if your company s name is Number One Pest Control, a good Web address might be www.numberonepest.com. To help boost awareness of your URL, include your Web type of fans used; shooting hose length and diameter; introduction site location(s); and the amount of fumigant applied. This information will be used to confirm if recommended procedures that should prevent fog-outs were followed. A site visit will be required to assess the condition of objects alleged to be affected. Their location in relation to where the Vikane was introduced also will be important to determine if a fog-out may have occurred. For example, if the tarnished objects are not in the same room or in the air stream of the fumigant introduction fans and/or other objects sensitive to damage by fog-outs in the vicinity were not affected a fog-out most likely did not occur. CAPITALIZE ON THE TENDENCY TO SURF Company Web sites are an important way to communicate with customers site on your business cards, sales materials (including banners) and truck signage. Your company s Web site should be updated frequently with current information. It also should include what services your company provides, contact information (phone, fax and e-mail) and general information on what makes your company unique. Ask yourself, What would I look for in a fumigation company if I were a homeowner? Include information such as how long you have been in business, what areas you serve and the number of jobs you have completed. You also may want to consider including testimonials from past satisfied customers and pictures from fumigations you have completed. You also will want to be sure that your Prevention is the No. 1 Defense Against Fog-outs It is important to remember that prevention is the No. 1 defense against fog-outs. Here are a few tips to avoid fog-outs: Use an introduction line that is 100 feet or longer with a small (ca. 1 8- inch ID) interior diameter to control the rate of fumigant introduction. Direct Vikane gas fumigant into the airflow of one or more fans that have a capacity of at least 1,000 cubic feet per minute for each pound of Vikane released per minute. Use multiple release sites and a pulsed technique when introducing Vikane to prevent overapplying fumigant in one area. You also may want to consider having contract language that requires the customer to contact you within a limited time, such as two to three days after the fumigation, to report any alleged damage from the fumigation. This will help to resolve any issues quickly and minimize customers blaming damage caused by other sources on the fumigation process. Web site is easy to navigate. All pages and information should be clearly labeled and relate to each other in a sensible fashion. For instance, it may make sense to have a navigational bar on the left-hand side of the Web site with links to various pages on the site similar to a table of contents in a magazine. Be sure to include a link on each page to allow an easy return to the home or main page. A Web site is an important marketing tool that every fumigation company should have. Consider starting a Web site for your company today. Talk to your account representative from Dow AgroSciences about how you can link your company s Web site to the Vikane gas fumigant Web site, www.termitetenting.com. This Web site provides valuable information to your customers, such as general drywood termite information, how the professional fumigation process works and why fumigation with Vikane is the best option to eliminate drywood termite infestations. In addition, there are videos on the Web site to further educate customers. 1 Pew Internet & American Life Project Surveys, March 2000 - April 2006. Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC. 5 BACK TO THE BASICS PROPE R CHLOROPICRIN USE By Ellen Thoms, Senior Research Biologist/Product Technology Specialist Chloropicrin is an essential and mandatory component of fumigation with Vikane gas fumigant. Chloropicrin is a liquid that rapidly evaporates to form a gas that is irritating at low concentrations to eyes and mucous membranes. Because Vikane is colorless and odorless, chloropicrin is applied in sufficient quantities inside the space to be fumigated to serve as a warning agent prior to and during the fumigation. The highly irritating properties of chloropicrin are one method the fumigator uses to discourage unauthorized entry into the structure during the fumigation. Extreme care must be taken when working with chloropicrin both before and after the fumigation. The following tips will help to ensure success. Before fumigation Use of chloropicrin is not a substitute for conducting a thorough walk-through inspection immediately prior to fumigant introduction to confirm that all people and pets have vacated the structure. During this inspection, make certain all attics and subareas, internal operable doors closets, cabinet doors, storage chests and appliances are open to aid the aeration of chloropicrin following fumigation. As with Vikane, select large, open areas to introduce chloropicrin. Follow label directions to prevent overapplication of chloropicrin to one area. These directions include establishing at least one chloropicrin release site per 45 MCF and not applying more than 3 fluid ounces of chloropicrin per release container. When applying chloropicrin, chemically resistant gloves and eye protection (splash-resistant goggles or full-face shield) must be worn. Small, resealable, graduated containers are available to accurately measure chloropicrin outside the fumigated building. This reduces the chance of spilling chloropicrin indoors. Chloropicrin is applied to wicking material in a shallow container five to 10 minutes prior to introducing Vikane. The wicking material in the chloropicrin pan should be replaced as it becomes matted and loses absorbency. Use protective sheeting, such as polyethylene plastic, at the introduction site to further protect floors and floor coverings. After fumigation Remove all chloropicrin containers during initial aeration. Follow all label directions for Vikane for aeration. The new label for Vikane gas fumigant has additional procedures developed specifically to assist with aeration of chloropicrin: Open all operable attic doors and accesses and direct a fan into the attic. If the structure has an attached garage, the door between the garage and structure should be open. If the structure has a central air handling system, the fan (or blower) should be activated for each unit if operational. As an alternative, a fan may be placed in front of a furnace inlet to blow air into central heating and cooling ducts. If necessary, increasing the temperature, extending the aeration time, and/or changing air handling filters can assist dissipating residual chloropicrin. If you have additional questions about proper chloropicrin introduction, contact your account representative from Dow AgroSciences or your distributor representative for Vikane gas fumigant. Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Vikane is a federally Restricted Use Pesticide. Always read and follow label directions.

7 TOP CALIFORNIA COMPANY RECOGNIZES THE VALUE OF VIKANE Family owned and operated Antimite Pest Control continues to offer employee and customer satisfaction Antimite Pest Control has been serving Southern California since 1941. Although the business has changed ownership, it remains at its core what it was more than 60 years ago a family owned and operated pest control company dedicated to not only its customers, but also its employees. The Blevins family acquired Antimite in 1958. Lee Blevins, the current president and majority owner of Antimite, started in the pest control business as a 16-yearold, learning the trade from his father. When Lee s father passed away in the early 1980s, Lee became the company president. Rick Swope joined the business in 1977. Together, Rick and Lee had a dream to acquire more companies and grow into one of the premier pest control companies in California. Their dream has exceeded their expectations: in 1981, Antimite had sales of about $1 million a year; and in 2006, this number reached about $43 million. Today, the company has 16 locations serving Southern California from Bakersfield to San Diego. Antimite currently conducts both Branch I, Branch II and Branch III work. Since 1986, it has been conducting fumigations; today, 90 percent of its fumigations are done in-house. Antimite conducts approximately 3,000 to 4,000 fumigations every year fumigating residential and commercial structures, says Rick Swope, vice president of Antimite. Swope says that in addition to offering employees a benefits package that includes a 401(k) plan, health insurance, and paid vacation, management also strives to get to know each employee on a personal level. Antimite has hosted an annual barbeque at its corporate headquarters for employees and also has organized a charity golf outing for the past 25 years. As one of the leading pest control companies in California, we have learned that not only is customer satisfaction key, Swope says, but employee satisfaction also is crucial to our business success. According to Swope, another key to Antimite s success has been the support of Dow AgroSciences not only for his business, but for the entire fumigation industry. We have always had a very positive relationship with Dow AgroSciences, Swope says. We have partnered with them on several research initiatives such as aeration and chloropicrin studies; and they have always taken our thoughts and ideas into consideration on how to improve the industry. Allowing us to make suggestions is invaluable. In addition, Swope says his Vikane gas fumigant specialist, Stan Woodward, has been working with Antimite for a long, long time. Stan has been working with us for, I would say, 20 years, Swope explains. He is always friendly and helpful. Whenever we have a job where we need some expertise, he is there, helping with monitoring and whatever We use Vikane because Dow AgroSciences has a track record of supporting the industry and our business. We know it is going to get the job done, and Dow AgroSciences will be there to support us. Rick Swope, vice president Antimite Pest Control else we need help with. He also travels to our offices and conducts annual stewardship training for us. Swope says Antimite is proud to use Vikane gas fumigant on all of its fumigation jobs. We use Vikane because Dow AgroSciences has a track record of supporting the industry and our business, Swope says. We take pride in offering a known product no questions asked.
