Breast health is an important part of every woman s personal health-care program. Recognizing that screening is essential to the early detection of breast cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends regular breast exams and mammograms for all women over the age of 40. The Columbia University Breast Cancer Screening Partnership offers free mammograms to qualified women as part of its commitment to breast care. ELIGIBILITY A doctor s referral is NOT required. You may be eligible for a free mammogram if: You are 40 years of age or older, OR you are under 40 and have a family history of breast cancer, AND You do not have health insurance, OR your insurance does not pay for screening, AND You have no problems or symptoms related to your breasts, AND You have not had a mammogram within the previous year. SCREENING On the day of your appointment, the Partnership s highly skilled professionals will perform a breast exam and a mammogram, and they will teach you how to examine your own breasts. All clinicians at Columbia University s Breast Cancer Screening Partnership concern themselves with your comfort and ongoing care. If necessary, the Partnership will provide you with referrals for follow-up care and counseling. If diagnosed with breast cancer, you will be informed and advised regarding treatment options by the Comprehensive Breast Center s multidisciplinary team of specialists, which includes breast surgeons, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and psychiatrists. Since you are uninsured, you may be eligible for a special form of Medicaid for women enrolled in this program to cover treatment.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES Those who qualify for a free mammogram may also qualify for free cervical (Pap) and colorectal screenings if they have not been tested in the last year.
