by Inés Ballesteros Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about the cover photograph. Help children use their knowledge of moving to think about the book. Build interest with questions such as these: Alguna vez se mudaron a un lugar nuevo? Cómo imaginan que sería ser nuevo en una ciudad o en una escuela? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about what happens when people move to new places. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 y miren la foto. Qué ven? Read As children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Places are always changing, with people moving in and out. Choices for Support Fluency Have children choose a passage from the book to read aloud. Help them use appropriate phrasing so the passage makes sense. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: lugares, personas, diferentes, amigos, mejor, familia, etc. Have them clap on each syllable: lu-ga-res, per-so-nas, di-fe-ren-tes, a-mi-gos, me-jor, fa-mi-lia, etc. Sort Words Materials: index cards. Write the following words on index cards: leer, sentir, ayudar, decir, comprar, hacer. Have children read the words. Ask them to sort the words according to whether they have the -ar, -er or -ir endings. 3 Lesson 25:

Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 25.1. Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Building Vocabulary Feeling Words Build on the words that tell how people feel in. Help children think about different ways people feel. Suggested language: Pensemos en cómo se sienten las personas cuando se mudan. La gente siente miedo cuando se muda. As children recall feelings, make a list using the sentence pattern: siente/se siente cuando. After recording feelings from the text, extend the list with other feelings children have.
