Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Help children understand that a sentence is a group of words with ending punctuation. Point out that the ending punctuation in includes periods and exclamation points. Model how to read sentences ending with an exclamation point. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example: peces and veo, peces and veces, caracoles and fl ores, cangrejo and color, cangrejo and conejo, ballena and arena, mar and miró. Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: estrella, algas, caracoles, pulpo, cangrejo, ballena, etc. Have them clap on each syllable: es-tre-lla, al-gas, ca-ra-co-les, pul-po, can-gre-jo, ba-lle-na, etc. Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and locate them quickly in words. Use letters from the words in the fi rst two pages of the book, including: veremos, muchas, cosas, en, el, mar, peces. 3 Lesson 18:
Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 18.7 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Author s Purpose Explain to children that they can use details to think about why an author writes a book. Model how to think about the author s purpose in this book.
