2 El venado de cola negra es muy común. Estos mamíferos grandes son vegetarianos. Black tailed deer are quite common. These big mammals are vegetarian. Los chiquillos (cervatillos) tienen manchas blancas para ayudarles a esconderse en el bosque. Las mamás frequentemente tienen gemelos, los cuales pueden caminar dentro de dos días de nacer. The fawns have white spots which help them hide in the forest. Does frequently have twins, which can walk just a few days after birth.

3 Si tienes suerte y andas muy quieto, quizas verás un gato montés. If you are lucky, and walk quietly, you might see a bobcat. Aunque se ve muy feroz, los gatos monteses generalmente pesan entre 16 y 30 libras solamente. Su dieta principalmente consiste de conejos. Su cola es muy corta, que es lo que les da su nombre en ingles: Bobcat. (Bob, en ingles, se refiere a un estilo de pelo corto.) Although it looks fierce, bobcats usually only weigh between 16 and 30 pounds. They mainly eat rabbits. Their tail is very short, which is how they got their name; bob-tailed cat or bobcat.

4 Tenemos muchas aves en la reserva. En la area principal en que trabajamos haciendo restauración, el pajaro carpintero es muy común. We have many birds on the Preserve. In our main restoration area, Acorn Woodpeckers are very common. Este pajarito parece un payaso con su gorra de rojo y su cara manchada. Los pajaros carpinteros esconden bellotas para comerlos durante el invierno. A veces olvidan donde las han puesto, y así proveen comida para otros animales, y ayudan que los robles crezcan en nuevos lugares. This bird looks like a clown with its red cap and its color-patch face. Woodpeckers hide acorns to eat them during winter. Sometimes they forget where they ve put them, and so they provide food for other animals and allow oak trees to grow in new places.

5 Un pajaro que casi siempre se oye antes de verlo es el halcón de hombros rojos. One bird you almost always hear before seeing it is the red shouldered hawk. Este halcón tiene un chillido muy distinto. Aunque más pequeño que otros halcones, es más agresivo, y es muy común escucharlo gritando retos atras del cielo. This hawk has a very distinctive cry. Although it s smaller than other hawks, it s more aggressive, and it s quite common to hear it screaming challenges across the sky.

6 Hay que tener cuidado con las serpientes de cascabel. Cuando suben la cabeza, como en esta foto, es hora de correr! Estas serpientes son una parte importante del sistema ecologica, porque comen ratones y ratas. You have to be careful with rattlesnakes. When they raise their head, like in this picture, it s time to get out of there! These snakes are an important part of the ecosystem, as they eat mice and other small rodents. Solamente las moscas tienen que temer las largatijas del oeste. A estos tambien le llaman barrigas azules por el color que tienen los barones. Durante el tiempo de reproducir, ellos intentan atraer una hembra haciendo flexiones para demonstrar la barriga azulita. Only flies have to be afraid of the Western Fence Lizard. These are also called blue-bellies because of the color especially noticable in the males. During mating season, they try to attract a female by doing push-ups to show off their blue belly.

When they raise their head, like in this picture, it s time to get out of there! These snakes are an important part of the ecosystem, as they eat mice and other small rodents.

7 Tambien tenemos unas matas muy distintas. El roble venenoso es uno que hay que aprender a distinguir muy rápidamente. We also have some very special plants. Poison oak is one you have to learn how to recognize very quickly. No es un roble, en actualidad es un arbusto. Todas partes de esta mata tienen un aceite que causan una reacción dermatológica en más o menos 70% de las personas. Para mi, me da un urticaria que pica demasiado! Actually, it s not an oak tree, but a shrub. All parts of this plant have an oil which causes a skin reaction in about 70% of people. For me, it gives me a rash which itches like crazy! Se conoce esta mata por las ojas, que son tres, los tallos, que no tienen espinas, y los colores, que cambia de verde a rojo durante el año. You can recognize this plant by its three leaves, stems without spines, and colors which change from green to red throughout the year.

Todas partes de esta mata tienen un aceite que causan una reacción dermatológica en más o menos 70% de las personas. Para mi, me da un urticaria que pica demasiado!

8 Tenemos muchas flores silvestres durante la primavera. Dos de estas son We have many wildflowers during the spring. Two of these are Pasto ojos azules y Blue eyed grass and Amapola de California California Poppies.

9 Hay otro tipo de criatura que se puede ver en la reserva natural, y esta es los maravillosos empleados y voluntarios de Acterra! There s one more kind of creature you can see on the Preserve and that is Acterra s wonderful staff and volunteers!
