2 MEDICAID EXPANSION 2014 What is Medicaid Expansion? On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, creating changes that will improve how people can receive affordable health care coverage. The law allows all Americans to choose a health insurance plan that works the best for them while making sure there is medical care for the people most in need. So because of this Washington State, beginning January 1st of 2014, Medicaid (Medical Coupons) will cover a new adult eligibility group. Would I qualify? To be eligible you need to be: Between 19 to 65 years of age Not Pregnant Income below 138% Federal Poverty Level (139% FPL but under the 400% FPL, you may qualify for tax credits and cost sharing reductions) US citizen or legal resident Not incarcerated (in jail) Not receiving or plan to receive Medicare (Health Insurance for people ages 65 or older) Classic Medicaid will continue with NO changes for: Foster Care children SSI cash recipients Aged, blind & disabled individuals Medicaid eligibility will grow for: Children Pregnant Women Low income families So more families will qualify. How do I apply? Washington Healthplanfinder is the website portal for you to use for applying beginning on October 1st of Individuals, families and small businesses in Washington will be able to compare and apply for health insurance coverage and have access to tax credits, reduced cost sharing and public programs such as Medicaid. The income information you enter on the application will be verified using electronic data sources such as SSA, IRS, Employment Security, etc. By doing this, you will find out if you are eligible the same day.
