By Gunter Kordovsky 10 & 11 Municipality Talks 3 Weather 3 Bar & Restaurant Guide 13 Dear Dr. John 14 Puzzles 14 Classifieds 17 Horoscopes 18 Sport 20 Let the Campaigns Roll Staff Local TV presenter Shelby McNab felt the first pressures of the upcoming election during a heated political discussion on local news show, HQTV on Thursday the 18th August. The debate was ignited by the broadcasting of a controversial video tape filmed by Mr. McNab in La Ceiba the day before. The tape saw several interviews with residents of barrio San Judas, San Jose, Las Canelas and La Azcona claiming that Richard Del Olmo and his assistant Andrina Muńoz had visited the neighbourhood in an effort to persuade people to transfer their votes to Utila. They alleged that free passages to the island, food and accommodation would be provided on the day before the election in exchange for their voting for Mr. Del Olmo. We were approached and offered a free trip Utila with food and accommodation in exchange for voting there said one of the men interviewed. I don t know how many document transfers were made, I wouldn t do it, it s illegal said Sonia Tosta de Munoz, Voter Registrar, who claims to have National Canditate been asked by Mr. Del Olmo to carry out the transfers. Richard Del Olmo, candidate for Mayor, denies all allegations of illegally transferring votes. Transfers have been made, but all within the restrictions of the law, he said. The transfer of votes is not illegal however applicants must have resided in the area in which they intend to vote for at least six months. Previously, voters needed a card from the municipality to make a transfer. Some people had troubles getting the card so I complained and they stopped this system, said Mr. Del Olmo. There is no law that can stop a Liberal Candidate Honduran to vote. he said. The video received mixed responses from the community with many callers phoning in to express their views. Some were outraged while others believed the tape to be a setup also claiming that Mr. McNab was biased towards the Liberal Party. The issue is, is it right for La Ceiba residents to decide who our Mayor is, not which party am I voting for said Mr. McNab during the heated discussions. The following evening Mayor Alton Cooper invited reporters from the National Press to discuss the situation. Its not about parties, its about the correct way of doing things said Mayor Cooper. The town needs a big explanation said Mr. Cesar Agusto. Expect increasing political activity as election day, 27th November, draws closer and parties are out canvassing for votes. The woman was taken seriously ill, suffering from numbness of the legs, severe diarrhoea and dangerously low pulse and blood pressure. It was pretty bad, she nearly died, said Dr. John who treated the patient. The couple had eaten barracuda followed by fish soup the next day. He threw up, probably getting rid of the toxins whereas her condition just deteriorated, said Dr. John. He warns that August and September bring increased risk of contracting Ciguatera fish poisoning and people should be careful. It is not possible to tell by observation whether a fish is affected by this toxin. The only way to avoid getting sick is not to eat big reef fish at this time of the year said Dr. John. Esperen un aumento de actividad conforme se acerca el dia de UPCO Update Staff Utilians were left frustrated at the beginning of August when UP- CO s payment software came to a standstill. A malfunctioning switch meant that islanders were unable to purchase prepaid electricity at the BGA bank from 10th to the 13th of August. We are in the process of having TTI manage the computers, back-ups and maintenance so this doesn t happen again. Said Ricardo De Flores, UPCO General Manager. This is not the only problem facing the company, worldwide fuel prices are soaring, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and they are feeling increasing pressure to raise prices. The rates were frozen in April in response to community anger at the escalating cost of electricity since UPCO took control of the islands power generation in May We are having a meeting with the bank and shareholders on September 10th to discuss the problem. We just cannot afford to maintain the price freeze. Said Mr. De Flores. Weather Outlook September is one of the hottest months of the year on Utila, try to avoid the sun and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. Moons 3rd Sept. 18th Sept. 11th Sept. 25th Sept. The tropics are only going to get busier as we enter the peak of the season, this may well be one of the most active Atlantic hurricane seasons on record, and will be the ninth above-normal Atlantic hurricane season in the last eleven years. Brig. Gen David Johnson, Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration MUNICIPALITY TALKS Like all of you I have been following the developments of Hurricane Katrina and my thoughts are with those who have friends and family in the affected areas. This month I would like to congratulate the new municipal police force for their continued hard work, their nightly patrols have made an enormous impact on crime levels. Since the introduction of the force there have barely been reports of break-ins, tourist harassments or any other petty crimes on the island. I would also like to publicly thank Troy Bodden and the US army core for all their help this month. As you know August the 27th marked the official start of campaigning ahead of November s elections, despite these preparations however municipal work continues as usual. Utila s community clinic has had a new larger door constructed to allow patients to enter the building faster and more safely in an emergency. New fans, lighting and wiring have also been installed. We have constructed a new road to Rocky Point for the new desalination plants. This was made possible by the generous assistance of Troy Bodden who provided the heavy machinery and materials for the project. Road works continue in the center of town, I hope you are pleased with the progress that has already been made and continue to be as patient as you have been. I am sure you have noticed that the water pressure on the island has greatly improved. This is due to the work carried out by the US army core on the main town wells at the baseball field. Remember I am always available to discuss any concerns. Please feel free to come and see me with any questions or suggestions and I hope you all enjoy the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. 3 4 September, 2005 September, ont. pg 1 ry reef fishes, particularly barracuda. The disease causes severe neurological symptoms including weakness, temperature sensation changes, pain and numbness in the extremities, often accompanied by diarrhoea, vomiting and cardiovascular problems. You usually get sick about four hours after eating bad fish and it may last weeks or months, said Dr. John. There is currently no cure, treatment is specific to the symptoms the patient experiences. It is important sufferers seek medical help immediately, prompt treatment is very important said Dr. John. The toxin is produced by microalgae Gambierdiscus toxicus that can grow practically anywhere on the reef. Herbivores ingest the toxin first, they then get eaten by larger fishes who accumulate the toxins over a lifespan in their flesh. The higher the fish is in the food chain the higher the concentration of toxins. Stick to small or pelagic fish, they are safe. said Dr. Jacobs, Guatemala. Limitese a pescados pequeña o de profundidad, ellos son buenos. dijo Dr. Jacobs Sunjam 2005 Mr. G One more time the infamous party took place at Water Caye on August 6th. After many days of rain the skies cleared up, there is a God for us! Said somebody on the dance floor. The people flooded Utila from a week before, lots of them from El Salvador where they were having a two-week holiday. This year there was no party boat and the partygoers had to find their way across the sea arranging with one of many fishermen. As a result many got stuck at the dock overnight since the weather turned rough in the afternoon and captains decided to go back home with their pockets full. The ones who made it to the tropical paradise were not disappointed. This year the organizers provided private security guards and first class toilets with lights! The music started from midday and as the sunset settled in, last year s DJ s Chaser, Jim Damato, Lu Maya and Balto opened the dance floor to the 600 or so fanatics of the House and Techno music. This year only the ones that really like to party came to the Caye said Luis Maier, mastermind of the Sunjam Party. Around the sandy main stage there was a fully stocked bar and Partygoers enjoy Water Caye at SunJam 2005 a couple of food stands. The troop of firedancers gathered once again this year to kick possessed dancers out of their mind with their rhythmic display of the fourth element. As the dance floor turned hot after midnight the rest of the guests showed up, Rafael 3, Erik Prestinary and Mickey Franco made it clear that Central America can produce world class DJ s. Along with them a bunch of partygoers that finally made it after spending the night in Utila jumped in hungry for party and fun. Around 10am the music faded away leaving the dancers no choice but to sit down after more than 15 hours of magic, love and pure party pleasure. Details and images of this and more events available at www. sunjamutila.com Una vez más la famosa fiesta se celebró en Water Caye el 6 de agosto. Detalles e imágenes de este y otros eventos disponibles en Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I wanted to thank the new municipal police for the great job they are doing. As the manager of a bar I feel much more secure since they have started working. They really come in to check at least three times a night, they re very friendly and they never intimidate anyone. They look out for both the tourists and the Utilians. Since they started I haven t heard of any break-ins or fights. They came to me and asked to swap numbers just in case of any emergency, its very reassuring to know I can call them anytime if I needed them. Keep up the good work guys! Monica Godoy, Tranquila Bar. They teach ou how to talk to people, deal ith terrorists, how to go into ouses in hostile areas, and how o get them before they get you. e learnt about the culture, what ou can and cant do like saluting r saying hi with the left hand, or howing the bottom of your feet r shoes. We have to show that e are respecting their culture oo ḣat kind of reception did ou receive? ome of the people were real appy to see us, kids, some feales. The males are hard to get n side because they don t trust nyone, just their own people. hey ve been through so much ith the former leader Sadam hey think we re coming to do he same thing he did. But once hey realize we re there for them, o give them their country back nd just make sure they can hanle it on their own. hat are your feelings about he war and have they changed uring your service in Iraq? didn t really think about it Beat the Bugs andfly attack Staff much. It s hard to answer cause we re doing what we re doing for their good, for the people that want it over there and also for the people that need it over here. It s a slow process but it s working. What did you do in typical day? Patrolling the streets, searching for anything out of the ordinary. We had a lot of issues with bombs on the road, people trying to shoot at us, we re basically trying to find the bad guys and stop them before they get a chance to plant bombs. Some days were better than other days. What was your most traumatic experience? Me and my squad, ten of us, were out on the streets looking for bombers (we have a list of suspects). They had a car bomb planted ready for us and we were heading back to our car when they set it off. Luckily nobody got killed that day, but almost everybody got some type of injury. That was traumatic, as close as I came to death. I got scars on my back, burns. I ve got the video too we got on their website. You see the Iraqis record everything they do and put it on their website to brag about it. Do you know of any other Utilians there? I have a cousin who s a marine also, he s going back this month for his second term, I m back in February. How do you feel about going back? I kind of don t want to go, but I need to go and make sure it gets done. I probably wont go back to Iraq ever again after that though. How did you get along with your fellow soldiers and superiors? he familiar sound of slapping skin echoed across the island last onth as the still air brought ith it an onslaught of blood ucking sandflies. he high temperatures seen in ugust provided ideal breedng conditions for the little ritters who are planning their ttack for the month of September. So how do you beat the bugs? A thick layer of baby oil to drown the flies when they land on your skin is a safe bet, but perhaps a little gross. Deet is another fairly reliable option but it should be taken into consideration that it s a carcinogenic substance and repeated application is not advised. Katrina Causes Chaos Families struggle against the floods in New Orleans Staff Hurricane Katrina slammed into the US Gulf Coast on Monday the 29th of August claiming thousands of lives and leaving a path of severe flooding and destruction. Utilians were following events carefully as the New Orleans area has close ties with Utila and is home to many islanders. I have been watching the weather channel all day, my kids live just outside New Orleans and I m very worried for them said Utilian Lillian Henderson. A mandatory evacuation order was in place twenty-four hours before the storm hit, the majority of residents headed away from the danger zone to seek the safety of neighbouring states. The lines at the Gas stations were crazy, with people panicking and trying to push in said Charles Conner a Utilian who left New Orleans for Utila the day before Katrina hit. Many did not have the means to evacuate and were forced to ride out the storm in emergency shelters and hope for the best. It had been predicted that the eye of the storm would make landfall directly over New Orleans. The city is located 15ft below sea level and is surrounded by water, as a result such a direct hit would have been catastrophic. We are facing the storm that most of us have feared, this is a once in a lifetime event, Mayor Nagin said before the hurricane hit. Another weather front travelling south caused the storm to change direction just before landfall shifting the eye to the east with Harrison County in Mississippi bearing the brunt of the storm. The flooding is just everywhere... New Orleans, all through Mississippi and Alabama, said Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. All those low-lying areas are just devastated. Thirty people are said to have died when a beach-front apartment complex collapsed in Biloxi, Mississippi. There were reports of bodies floating in the floodwaters of New Orleans. A huge rescue and recovery operation is now underway, President Bush cut short his holiday by two days to return to Washington and coordinate the rescue effort. Right now our priority is on saving lives and we are still in the midst of search and rescue operations, he said in an address to the nation. It is estimated that total damages will exceed $25 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster ever for the US insurance industry. Utilian Update Frank Feurtado, Utilian living in Beaumont, sent an to say that all Utilians in the affected areas are safe and accounted for. I have been in contact with most every one and they are scattered all over the country. he said. He reported that a large group of around fifty including the Hendersons, Hills, Zelayas and others are sheltering in the Methodist Church in Beaumont.

WORLD NEWS Greece Plane Crash Tragedy All 121 passengers aboard a Cypriot Boeing 737 died when the plane crashed in Greece on Sunday 14th August. The Helios Airways flight was headed for Prague via Athens, 17 children were on board. Experts believe a technical failure led to a loss of cabin pressure, exposing those on board to extreme cold and lack of oxygen. A flight attendant attempted to take control of the plane after both pilots lost consciousness and at least 25 people were still alive when the plane crashed. A full investigation into the safety of the airline is underway. Israeli Withdrawal Palestinians celebrated as Israel withdrew from all its settlements in the Gaza Strip and four in the West Bank last month. Most people left peacefully, however Israeli troops were forced to remove some settlers who refused to leave of their own accord. Israel s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon described the pullout as a one-time event. More pullouts are unlikely in the near future as peace talks have yet to be planned. I want him to honour my son by bringing the troops home immediately, I don t want him to use my son s name or my name to justify any more killing. Mrs. Sheehan said. CAFTA, What does it mean to you? Rahul Singh Despite protests within Central America and the US, The Central American Free Trade Agreement (Cafta) was finally adopted on August 2nd. There have been demonstrations in Honduras over worries that resources such as education, health care, energy, and water utilities will be privatised. Since Utila s electricity was privatised by UPCO in May 2003 the price of a kw has risen from 2 to over 5 Lempiras in just two years. The agreement is between five Central American Countries Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, one Caribbean country the Dominican Republic and the US. Opening up their markets, will help those democracies attract the trade and investment needed for economic growth, said President Bush. Cafta aims to promote free trade through the reduction of tariffs on trade and by providing companies with greater powers to challenge government laws, which restrict their business interests. The controversial bill only scraped through the US House of Representatives by 217 to 215. In recent years there have been demonstrations in Honduras as well as many other of the six Central American countries. The following are the main issues of concern. Patent Laws One of the most controversial laws is the upholding of US patent laws in the Cafta region, If Bush gets his way, CAFTA will lock countries into tough new patent rules that will drive the cost of life-saving drugs up and delay or obstruct generic competition. Says Asia Russell of the non-profit Health GAP. For example the price of HIV combating drugs will increase. In Honduras more than 73,000 people are infected and one person dies with AIDS each hour. Worker Rights & The Environment Cafta opens up the opportunity for companies to sue governments over regulations (including the enforcement of local environmental laws). Government policies to protect worker rights can also be challenged if proved to be a barrier to trade and restrictive. Nationalised Industries Government run industries would open up to private investment. At this stage it is the big US companies that are best placed to take over the running of such industries. The telecommunications industry is one of many lucrative markets US companies hope to exploit. The treaty offers the riches of the Central American peoples on a silver platter. Ground floor shop 2005 Buoys Behind the Scenes Meet Fred Hayes and Jack Jackson, the guys responsible for the maintenance of the islands buoy system. For the last nine years the duo have been in charge of installing new buoys and cleaning and maintaining the existing ones. We go out once a month and clean the barnacles off with wire brushes, said Mr. Hayes. No mean feat when you consider there are 65 buoys around Utila. Eight of these buoys are brand new, We watch where the divers go and see where they might need new buoys, we are always open to suggestions, said Mr. Hayes. Recently there has been some confusion over who is in charge of funding the buoy system. Previously, when the system was introduced onto the island in 1993 BICA, in cooperation with the municipality, provided the materials. Recently UDSEC have taken over this responsibility and the municipality continue to pay the wages of Mr. Hayes and Mr. Jackson. Many of the buoys go missing on a regular basis, usually as a result of wear and tear or bad weather, however some are stolen. If you come across a lost buoy, the municipal reward for returning the item is Lps.300. Missing buoys can be reported to either UDSEC or directly to Mr. Hayes and Mr. Jackson. Fred Hayes Chamber Across the island there is still confusion regarding the hyperbaric chamber fees. The $1 chamber fee is NOT an insurance fee, municipal law states that every diver MUST pay it (fees contribute towards maintenance and running costs). Similarly instructors and divemasters pay a mandatory, annual fee and, according to chamber staff, will receive free hyperbaric treatment. Dive professionals working on the island must pay the fee, if they need treatment the costs will be covered, said Marjorie Grande, Head Chamber Administrator. As an instructor/divemaster, having additional Professional DAN insurance, will cover everyone diving with you, good news for your customers if they do not have insurance! Professional dive insurance is recommended by the Chamber, this does not exemplify anyone from paying the chamber fee, it is Municipal law.

The original advert that enticed Mr. Kordovsky The facts of Fathom II as experienced by Fathom member Gunter Kordovsky It all started on the Airport in Montreal where I was browsing through a skin diver magazine and came upon the following Ad by Fathom II. Having frozen for five months as a ski instructor the opportunity to dive the Caribbean ocean looking for Spanish galleons and pirate booty seemed awful appealing. The very enticing ad naturally got my adventure blood circulating and I wrote them and was accepted after a $500 down payment. The expedition worked on a share base. $1500 for a ½ share, $3000 for a full share. So I worked hard on saving for the great adventure of a lifetime in the hope of getting rich. When reality hit I found out how naïve we all where. On my way to join to expedition I reached Los Angeles at midnight and called my Fathom connection. Sorry the phone is disconnected, I was told by the operator. First I thought I was the victim of a hoax and there goes my dream of Spanish gold. But the operator interrupted my negative thought treasure or trickery? pattern telling me to call another number. I called only to find out I was too late. Fathom left ten days ago. I had two options; return to Toronto and cut my losses or fly to Utila. Next day when I asked for a flight to Honduras they barely knew where it was and had never heard of Utila. Finally after almost a week of killing time in a motel, and a night spent in la lima with drunken soldiers shooting their guns off for excitement I found myself in La Ceiba. Oh you want to go to Utila, hurry the plane is waiting. I thought I was in a manana country? Plane?!? Here was this tiny threeseat Cessna I was supposed to trust to get me to the adventure destination of a lifetime. After a bone-rattling, gravel-hit landing we survived the 2200ft runway and taxied to the international airport terminal, a clapboard contraption with siding missing and holes in the roof and floor. A old rusty truck belonging to Foster Cooper one of the leading citizens and business men took me to our Fathom headquarters. No welcome committee; I was disappointed and went in the house; another clapboard contraption, loaded with old bottles (pirate bottles so called by the locals) an old skull, ship spikes diving gear etc... With no ac. On the whole island the stifling heat proved a shock to my system used to sub zero temperatures. After several hours some of our crew members arrived who where out diving. Whats wrong I see no gold doubloons? They looked at me like; oh no not another F*****G Jo Jo as our Russian diving director Anatole used to call us. In the course of our conversation I found out that they tried to reach me in Canada to let me know they were leaving earlier but couldn t reach me. At six we went for supper to Rosis establishment and had the usual island cuisine- mostly starch. I must say my tastebuds used to the superb French Mr. Kordovsky with spear gun in 1970 cooking had some adjusting to do. But whats a little sacrifice when we will strike it rich. The night was a horror show with slapping sandflies stifling heat and dreams of adventure and wealth. The next morning Anatole (after pestering him into action) took me to the old airport to show me an old canon discovered by the first Utila diver Johnny Bodden. I hardly recognized the heavily incrusted piece of pirate atillevie. Afer getting quite nervous about a little barracuda Ana- tole decided to show that green Austrian underwater aficionado some action. He shot a tarpon but didn t get him good so the powerful gamefish ripped the line spilling blood and guts into the water. I didn t know that the airport at that time was a real hot spot for sharks so I nearly freaked when Anatole jerked me into the shallow reef screaming in my ear, watch out sharks are moving in! Adrenaline pumping, no chain mail suit for protection, I watched totally mesmerized by the unfolding drama as one whitetip shark sliced through the deep blue and took a bite out of the wounded fish, then another one of those splendid savages of the sea joined the action and took a bite leaving the rest for a couple of big barracdas to finish off. With Anatole laughing we head back for the beach. I must admit I didn t expect that kind of inauguration. In the year and a half I spent with Fathom II I experienced many shark attacks especially since I was in charge of supplying fish for the group of as many as 20 people or more. And since we where mostly strapped short for operation cash the sea had to feed us. Due to the shortage of funds we had many operation difficulties. First no air, no gas etc... There wasn t even a wreck to work until Chris and me found the Oliver, a British log runner discovered outside Steward Bank in 70ft of water. We excavated the wreck for six months and found two big anchors, one canon, old bottles and pottery which we preserved with the help of two Swedish preservation experts who worked on the Wasa (a Swedish warship sunk in the 1600). According to Fathom brochures there are supposed to be dozens of treasure wrecks around Utila. Well there are if you count every ballast stone or rusty nail a wreck. According to one reliable source there are supposed to be two English ships on Utila, The Kelly (which was never found) and The Olliver. All the rest is pure nonsense. Actually some of our members who paid $3000 left in disgust when they found out that the story of the Santiago the phantom galleon was pure fiction. Later on we brought a converted minesweeper in to do some further exploring on other far off locations. We worked the Olliver in three shifts, an exciting job especially when one found an artifact and started running low on air. Since some of the artifacts are very fragile one has to work carefully with an airlift (an underwater suction device) not to damage the piece. For heavier work we used a 6 or 8inch dredge or the mailbox. A mailbox is a metal contraption that fits over the engine and converts the prop trust downward to blow sand away. There was also a big anchor found in turtle harbour. Of course in the bars at night especially the famous infamous bucket of blood, which incidently made News Week as the most unique bar in the western hemisphere; the treasure stories were always circulating. But after sifting all the yarn I came to the conclusion that the only fairly reliable story is about the sword and gold chalice found in the early 1900 s in the Pumkin Hill cave. So contrary to public belief the Fathom Expedition from a financial point of view was a total farce and joined the endless chain of unsuccessful treasure hunts. I myself turned victim and got stuck here with no funds when I wanted to leave after 1½ years. A Canadian tax return bought me my ticket our of here and the dream of Spanish doubloons stayed a dream. Somebody once said; Its much more profitable to write about treasures than look for them. From all the treasure hunters there is only a very small percentage who succeed. Some pay dearly for their dream. Fortunes have been spent in search for riches and lost! It took Mel Fisher ten years to find the Atotcha, one of the richest galleons in Florida, he lost his son and daughter in the process. It took me several years to find and appreciate the REAL TREASURES OF UTILA! Water Babies For those who fancy a change from the tranquility of diving and feel the need for speed. Yet activists and researchers alike are also left speechless when they see dive boats endangering this precious fish. An organization on Utila, the Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Centre, has drawn up guidelines for use by recreational vessels. These are based on government regulations from locations such as Ningaloo reef where they have a very similar tourist industry and whale shark opportunities. When you are choosing your dive shop have a look. Do they display the guidelines? Do they give briefings that mirror that of the posters? Whale Shark If they do, then they are taking an active role in respecting the life of the whale shark. If not, then they may be carelessly creating stressful situations for this gentle giant that can leave it vulnerable. One of the quotes from the posters really sticks out. These guidelines actually increase average contact time from a few seconds to minutes at a time YOUR ENCOUNTER IS A PRIVI- LEGE NOT A RIGHT. 8 14 September, 2005 DEAR DR. JOHN Dear Doctor John, I am an American Tourist male who is living on the Island. When I first came here to Utila I knew I had finally found a home. For the first time in my life I did not feel like an outcast. I was never popular at school. They all said I was weird and I became a loner. After I graduated I got a job but the problems continued. When I would approach girls at work or afterwards at a bar, they would call me names and say things like get lost creep. I decided I had to get out of the USA. As I travelled south through Central America I tried meeting women in various bars, but the only ones who would have anything to do with me were the prostitutes. After I had paid them to spend the night with me, they would leave early almost immediately after we had finished, if I asked them can we meet again they would always say something like no way Jose. When I arrived in Utila I felt I was accepted and I hoped that PRAYER Pastor Nick ur Father which art in heaven, allowed be thy name: e come before you Lord Jesus eeling our weakness, and our nworthiness. ut because of your everlastng love, we can come boldly nto your throne of grace, and here we will obtain mercy and orgiveness. e thank you for all your lessings. e thank you for the lovely eople that write this magazine, less them, and all who read his paper. e also pray for those who are uffering from the hurricane atrina, hank you Lord for all your lessings. eep us safe all through this ay, from danger seen, and nseen. In Jesus name we pray; men. my problem with women would not reoccur here. I was dead wrong, they just don t want anything to do with me. Now I will tell you my big problem. I am having sex with my dog. She doesn t seem to mind, but I know she thinks I m a knucklehead. I m not worried about my dog telling anybody my secret, but the real problem is that she howls and crys while I am performing the perverted act on her and I am afraid that people passing in the street will hear something and come to see what is going on. I am also starting to get a little concerned, I believe I am even starting to think and act like a dog. I find that when I go out at night I like to sniff all over and mark my territory by urinating on the ground and against posts. I currently have my eye on a couple of rather attractive looking female dogs that continually flaunt their sleek bodies in front of me. I especially get sexually excited when they are in heat, however, when I try to pet these beautiful female specimens, they Gringas Mon - Sat 5-10 pm Next to Adventist Church A nuestro padre, que reina en los cielos, alabado sea tu nombre: Venimos ante ti senor Jesus, para que llenes nuestras debilidades y nos cubras con tu omnipotencia. I am also concerned about the possibility of getting a sexually transmitted disease from my dog or these other island dogs. What is your advice? I must be honest I am also getting a little bored with only canine sex. I am thinking about a bit of variety, maybe a hog, a horse, or maybe a chicken. But my big question to you Doctor John, is - what can be done for a loser like me? I need your wise advice. Please help me Doctor John. I am concerned that women might think I am some kind of pervert. Yours sincerely - Expatriate American Dear Pathetic ExPat, Pardon the pun, but you are one sick puppy. Your poor sexually abused dog should be the one you worry about. You should be concerned about her getting a sexually transmitted disease from you. I am a dog lover (not in the sexual sense of course) and your letter disgusts me. However, as a Physician, I follow the Hippocratic Oath and must endeavour to help all sick people no matter how revolting, disgusting, obnoxious, and perverted their behaviour is. As a Doctor, Local Nautical QUIZ Entertainment General Knowledge In the News Food & Drink practising that most noble of all professions, I am duty bound not to judge you, even though as I read your letter I wanted to vomit. You are very typical of some of the foreigners who move here to Utila. You are a lost soul and a broken human being, a hedonist that found a home. The people of Utila are very non-judgemental and tolerant. But, if they find out you are bunnin your dog, you better watch out, because you have crossed the line. For you, my sick friend, there is only one answer. Get some fishing line cut off a 10 ft. length and at one end of the line create a hangman s noose. Then climb up the tallest coconut tree you can find and tie the other end securely to the top of the coconut tree. Now take the noose and position it tightly around your testicles and jump from the top of the tree. Pray for a strong East Wind to carry away the sound of your screams as you hang in mid-air. When your testicles eventually rot away from strangulation you will finally drop down to the sand below, minus your sick huevos. Castration is your only cure! Yours - Dr. John. Dr. John welcomes all your letters. your letter to utilaeastwind@gmail.com or hand it to Dr.. John at the clinic. Who was the last man to be publicly hung on Utila and what was his crime? THIS MONTH 60 elevated seats in air conditioned comfort Tickets only 45 lps Screening in September Sahara, Beauty Shop, and Crash are the featured films for the month. Wednesday is classic night where you can see movies you ve always heard about but may not have seen. Movies like The French Connection and The Sting. Fridays are Drive-in Theater movies not to be taken seriously and a perfect way to start the weekend. Look for Dracula (1931) and Superman. Movies are shown nightly at 7:30pm with the exception of Friday (8pm) and Saturday (6:30pm and 8:30pm). Check for more information. Sahara Matthew McConaughey Steve Zahn Penelope Cruz Sahara finds our hero, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) in Africa looking for a Confederate ironclad ship that impossibly might have ended up there. Soon he and his faithful sidekick Al Giordino (Steve Zahn) are lost in another adventure, discovering a deadly contaminate being tracked by a beautiful doctor (Penelope Cruz). Sahara is a kindler, gentler action film that has all the elements in place for a better, more memorable franchise. Crash Matt Dillon Sandra Bullock Brendan Fraser Tony Danza A moving exploration of the interlocking lives of a dozen Los Angeles residents--black, white, latino, Asian, and Persian. A nervous district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his wife (Sandra Bullock) get car-jacked by a pair of young black men (Larenz Tate and Chris Ludacris Bridges); a rich black T.V. Director (Terrence Howard) and his wife (Thandie Newton) get pulled over by a white racist cop (Matt Dillon) and his reluctant partner (Ryan Phillipe); these are only two of the interlocking stories that reach up and down class lines. The cast meets the strong script head-on, this sort of multi-character mosaic is hard to pull off; Crash rivals such classics as Nashville and Short Cuts. A knockout. As Ashly Giles hit the winning runs to put England into a 2-1 lead with only one game left to play. Described by many as the greatest ever Ashes Series, England crossed the wining line with only three wickets remaing. All of which sets up a mouth watering final test. Baseball Swinging Hawaiias Michael Memea hit the first ever game ending homer in little League history to snatch the title 7-6 from Curacao. With the games tied Michael Memea in the extra innings Memea comes to the plate and Curacaos the ball high out of the ground to seal a remarkable comeback. I knew it was gone, Memea said afterward, sporting a necklace made from his favourite candy pieces around his neck. The Hawaiian team will have little time to celebrate their historic victory as next week they will be back to Curacaoing the books at school. Owen Transfer Michael Owen has signed for English club Newcastle United in a $30M deal with Spanish giants Real Madrid. Cycling Armstrong Drug Allegations Lance Armstrong the seven times winner of the Tour de France has been accused by French sports newspaper L Equipe of doping during the 1999 Tour. I will simply restate what I have said many times: I have never taken performance-enhancing drugs. Said Armstrong. L Equipe have had a long running vendetta against the American, but the controversy is sure to drag on taking a shine off the career of one the greatest cyclist of all time.
