1 Singular Plural English mi mis my tu tus you (informal, singular) su sus his her its your (formal., plural) nuestro nuestra nuestros nuestras our* vuestro vuestra vuestros vuestras your* (informal, plural) su sus their Possessive adjectives always precede the nouns (person, place or thing) they introduce. Unlike English, they agree in number with the nouns they modify. Yo necesito mi libro. Yo necesito mi pluma. Yo necesito mis libros. Yo necesito mis plumas. I need my book. I need my pen. I need my books. I need my pens. *Nuestro(a)(s), and *vuestro(a)(s) must also agree in gender. (The other adjectives take the same endings for both genders). Nosotros necesitamos nuestro libro. Nosotros necesitamos nuestra pluma. Nosotros necesitamos nuestros libros. Nosotros necesitamos nuestras plumas. We need our book. We need our pen. We need our books. We need our pens. 1
2 Possessive adjectives agree in gender with the thing possessed and not with the possessor. For example, two male students referring to their female professor will say nuestra profesora (our professor). Keep in mind that su and sus have several meanings (your, his, her, its or their). The context normally clarifies to whom they refer. However, when ambiguity does occur, one of the following combinations of de + pronun is used in place of su or sus. Formula: definite + noun + de + pronoun article Example: 1) su libro = el libro de usted (your book) el libro de él (his book) el libro de ella (her book) el libro de ustedes (your book) el libro de ellos (their book) el libro de ellas (their book) 2) sus libros = los libros de usted (your books) los libros de él (his books) los libros de ella (her books) los libros de ustedes (your books) los libros de ellos (their books) los libros de ellas (their books) Texto: pgs Act: pg a (1-5) 1.9b (1-10) Handouts 2
