Esta es una cita del diálogo entablado el pasado mes de enero entre Rudolf Weber, CEO del Grupo Kaba, y el arquitecto y profesor austriaco Dietmar Eberle. Cómo enfoca el arquitecto el tema seguridad? Qué lugar ocupa la tecnología en su tarea profesional? En este diálogo el tema seguridad es tratado no sólo desde el aspecto tecnológico, sino también desde el filosófico. En las páginas 4 a 7 puede leer el diàlogo completo. También la empresa Computerized Security Systems Inc. (CSS) se adentra en nuevos mundos. Why does a door or a key have a particular significance? Because they connect worlds, one with another. This was part of a conversation which took place in January between Rudolf Weber, CEO of the Kaba Group, and the Austrian architect and professor Dietmar Eberle. How does the architect see the subject of security? What is the importance of technology in his work? In this discussion, the issue of security is explored not just from the usual technical point of view but also from a philosophical one. You can read what they said on pages 4 to 7. Computerized Security Systems Inc. (CSS) is also entering new worlds: the company, with its Saflok and La Gard brands, became part of the Kaba Group in October of last year. In this spring edition of Security Update, we would like to extend a very warm welcome to the customers and staff of CSS and to introduce these new Kaba members to our readership. If you have visited Hong Kong recently, you may have noticed how quiet and pleasant the metro stations are along the urban lines. Platform screen doors play a key part in creating this atmosphere. 4 FORUM Security has a great deal to do with familiarity What is the significance of a locking system for architecture? Rudolf Weber, CEO of the Kaba Group, meets Dietmar Eberle, Professor of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and co-owner of the international architectural firm Baumschlager-Eberle. Rudolf Weber in conversation with Dietmar Eberle, Professor of Architecture at the ETH Zurich. Continuity is an important success factor. Rudolf Weber (RW) Architecture has always fascinated me and I have a very special relationship with it: in fact, the only reason I didn t actually become an architect is because I can t draw all that well. So I opted to study civil engineering instead. Dietmar Eberle (DE) Architects, you know, have two peculiar characteristics: they are the lowest-paid group of academics, but as compensation for that they also have the longest life expectancy. RW I expect you re right! (laughs). For us as a security and technology group, architects are very important partners. How do you as an architect see the subject of security? DE As we know, security has a great deal to do with familiarity. The things we are familiar with are the things we all accept most easily. We don t need to worry about the familiar, because we know it. Interestingly, the improvements that the latest technology can offer us seem to make no difference to this. I expect your firm could have stopped developing and producing keys a long time ago, replacing them with fully electronic security systems. 4 KABA Security Update no.35 1/2007

5 FORUM RW In principle, yes, you re right. Life could be made a whole lot simpler with modern technology. But most people would not want to give up the traditional key. They have grown up with the key and are familiar with it. When we recommend keyless access systems to our customers, the same questions are always asked: can it operate without any sort of key at all? Can we gain access even if the power goes down? And so on. Precedence is given to what is familiar. DE It has always been the case that technological possibilities do not decide what is implemented and produced. It is familiarity or, in other words, convention, which decides. RW At the same time, this familiarity varies in different cultures. In the People s Republic of China, for instance, electronic access systems have become standard much more quickly, particularly on business premises. Many people in Asia have never seen a reversible key in their day-to-day lives and are therefore more open to the latest achievements in our industry. DE The idea of a secure key lock is not so deeply rooted in the culture of these regions. So they are not concerned whether they use a key or a chip. In our part of the world, on the other hand, a key with integrated chip will continue to gain easier acceptance than, for instance, a cell phone as an access medium. RW You re right, the customers value the feeling of security they have when a new product makes use of an earlier application. That is why we have had success with mechatronics the combination of mechanical locking systems with digital functions. Also, faith in technology in and of itself does not rule today: technology is applied for the benefit of the user. A lot of importance is attached to this, in our planning and development meetings. We often have to compare the technical security and reliability of a locking system against its design and convenience. What is your focus here as an architect? Technology is subject to our perceptions. Security Update no.35 1/2007 KABA 5

6 FORUM RW That includes the familiar hand movement you have to make to open from one world into another. DE There is no doubt that technology is subject to our perceptions. What we as people feel, imagine, see. At the end of the day, it is not just the security technology which is important, but also the context in which it is applied. It is in fact the application which determines the technology, not the other way round. This brings us back to our first subject. It is no accident that certain technologies are successful in very particular areas. Technology is applied for the benefit of the user. DE We all want to live in a peaceful, idyllic country, and preferably in the middle of town. So what we perceive as quality of life is neither one nor the other. What we are really attracted to is having it all at the same time. This brings us to the best subject in architecture: transition. What makes a room exciting is the transition from one element to another. Why does the key have a particular significance? Because it connects worlds. In my view, a key or a door never excludes a world, but is always the transition from one world to another. What makes a locking system interesting is that it makes this transition possible for us. RW We have the greatest success with new technologies where the new features are much needed. For residents in an old people s home, for instance, it can be a great relief if they can open doors without having to put the key in the lock. We have talked about what makes a technology successful. But what makes an architect successful? DE In society there are expectations, feelings, fears and hopes which are more than the preserve of just one individual and these are what combine to make up the Zeitgeist, the spirit of the age. If, as an architect, you do something which speaks to this Zeitgeist, then you will be successful. But that is no secret reserved for architects, it applies in all areas. 6 KABA Security Update no.35 1/2007

7 FORUM RW Another factor in success is continuity. One of our staff was asked recently what our company does better than the others. He thought about it and then said: We might not do everything better, but we are focused on continuity. The others may also bring a tasty meal to the table, but we cook constant quality. If we have continuity in our management and always try to justify our decisions from a longterm perspective, then we will have a certain advantage in the market. 8 FORUM Saflok and La Gard join the Kaba family With the purchase of Computerized Security Systems Inc. (CSS) in autumn 2006, Kaba acquired two brands renowned for their high-quality locking and access management systems: Saflok and La Gard. The acquisition strengthens not only Kaba, but also these two new members of the Kaba family. The outlook is bright. Back in 1977, a small company called Val-Safe in Troy, Michigan (USA), developed the first cost-effective safe specifically for hotel rooms. Today, 30 years later, the company is called Saflok. Its products are among the most technologically sophisticated in the security market, and the brand is known all over the world. Countless Saflok electronic access control systems are in use across the globe, mainly in the hotel industry, but also in residential, commercial and government buildings. As a member of the Kaba Group, Saflok is now embarking on a new chapter in its history. One of management s key goals is to combine Kaba s and Saflok s strengths in the hotel market. It is really exciting that we have been acquired by someone who knows the security business, says Kerry Hirschy, Saflok Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. In the lodging industry, Kaba and Saflok have traditionally focused on different segments. Working together, we can now implement a partnership approach in addressing the entire market. The acquisition creates the potential for high value-added synergies in development, production, marketing and distribution. The Saflok Messenger is particularly exciting, says Frank Belflower, Head of Access + Key Systems Americas. Saflok is the first company to convert stand-alone, battery-operated door locks to a next generation wireless system. Such high-tech solutions close a gap in Kaba s product portfolio. Belflower is impressed with the spirit of cooperation demonstrated by both sides: Transitioning from competitors to colleagues can often be difficult. But in this case, a spirit of cooperation, respect and excitement has been evident from day one. Saflok will be opening doors for Kaba in the future. 9 FORUM Excitement building at La Gard The CSS acquisition also brings together two market leaders: La Gard, the well-known manufacturer of medium security electronic locking devices for safes and vaults, and Kaba, the number one player in the high-security market. The integration of the two companies presents significant development potential for the future. While La Gard and Kaba have been competitors over the years, there will be enough product differentiation to enable us to properly position each of the companies based upon their core strengths, says Carl Sideranko, Head of the newly formed Safe Locks Division. We will carefully evaluate the product offering of each company, eliminate duplication and present a clearly defined product portfolio to the market. Kaba now has the right solution for every application in all price ranges. Smartpoint : La Gard s biometric safe lock uses a Light Emitting Sensor (LES) and can read fingerprints even under difficult conditions. In sales, La Gard has so far focused on end-users, while Kaba has usually been represented on the market through OEM clients. We feel the way La Gard has gone to market is the ideal sales model, says Steve Wolf, Sales Director at Kaba. So we want to continue with this strategy, which will help us to strengthen relationships with our distribution partners. According to Ashley Prall, General Manager of Kaba Mas in Lexington, Kentucky (USA), employees at both companies are excited about this new chapter in their history: To echo Frank Belflower s comment, the spirit of cooperation between La Gard und Kaba has been exceptional from day one. New Safe Locks Division On July 1, 2006, the Kaba Group announced the formation of the global Safe Locks Division, led by Carl Sideranko. The global organization is built around two Strategic Business Segments: Safe Locks Europe and Safe Locks Americas/ Asia Pacific. This is a tremendous opportunity for all division employees, says Sideranko. While we may be small in number, this is truly a global structure. A focused market approach, strong brand awareness and a large installed base has the Safe Locks Division poised for growth and profitability. With the acquisition of CSS from Masco, La Gard is the newest addition to the division. 10 FORUM Silca expands in the Netherlands and India Kaba s Italian affiliate Silca S.p.A. recently signed two important contracts: a joint venture to manufacture and distribute key copying machines and keys in India, and the acquisition of a distributor in the Netherlands. With these new developments, Silca is expanding its global presence and establishing a foothold in India. Silca is the world s leading manufacturer of key blanks, key coding machines and transponder keys. In October 2006, Silca launched a joint venture with Tuff Engineering Private Ltd. The aim of the new joint-owned company is to manufacture and distribute key copying machines and keys to the replacement key market in India as well as to the OEM sector. This partnership gives us a strategically important entry into one of the world s fastest growing markets, explains Roberto Gaspari, Head of Key + Ident Systems EU/AP. The goal is firstly to establish Silca products in the SAARC countries India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and the Maldives; secondly, to take the OEM business to the next stage in the ASEAN members, including Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The local OEM market, in which Tuff is already op er ating successfully, will be promoted even more actively. Tuff Engineering is a manufacturing arm of the Indian Minda Group, an im portant conglomerate that makes pro ducts for, among others, the Indian automotive and motorbike industry. Tuff specializes in the production of key blanks and metal sheets as well as rotor assembly. The company employs around 300 people at its site in Noida near New Delhi. Within the next few months, Tuff will be changing its name to Minda Silca Engineering Ltd, and its replacement key products will in future bear the Silca logo. Acquisition in the Netherlands In autumn 2006, Silca also bought the family-owned company H. J. Cillekens & Zn. B.V. in order to strengthen its presence in the Netherlands. Cillekens is one of the major dealers in key blanks and mechanical locks. This acquisition may give us the opportunity to act more directly in the market. Joining our direct knowledge of the market and its needs with the strong relations with our existing Dutch partners will, we are sure, offer further opportunities to boost our business in the area. Our ability to forge partnerships with the best dealers in the world has been a central factor in our success, says Roberto Gaspari. For the time being, the new Silca company will continue to use the Cillekens name, which enjoys an excel - lent reputation and high brand awareness in the Dutch market. For the former owners of the company Jacques and Hanneke Cillekens, who have been Silca s loyal distribution partners for many years, the sale is an ideal solution within the context of their succession plans. 11 CASE STUDIES Hanover Airport launches into the future Kaba one-way corridors have been operating successfully in several European airports for some years now. Hanover Airport has opted for a specially modified Kaba solution with additional security features. Thanks to its central location in Europe, Hanover Airport, opened in 1952, plays an increasingly important role in national and international aviation. Around six million people a year pass through its three interconnected terminals. In accordance with the Schengen Agreement, passengers arriving at Hanover are directed into the Schengen or Non-Schengen zones of the terminal, depending on what country their flight departed from. It is important to keep these different passenger flows separate. In order to ensure that this happens, 20 one-way corridors from Kaba have recently been installed at several gates. Orthos PIL-M02 one-way corridors guide passenger flows towards the baggage reclaim. Eight more one-way corridors, in a longer version, i.e. with four successive door systems, guide passengers from the baggage reclaim towards the exit. Kaba s well-proven corridors were equipped with additional security features for the Hanover Airport project: video monitoring built into the ceiling detects passengers moving in the wrong direction, while a 2D system automa tically triggers an alarm should a passenger try to throw an object across the corridor. Having been in place for ten years and thus displaying upgrade limitations, its access control system was not up to meeting today s increasing security requirements. Kaba exos 9300 came out on top as the alternative. The Intelligent City relies on Kaba: the newly implemented access control system is compatible with the existing 263 HID readers and the 3,000 cards in circulation. UE Square is a mixed development in Singapore, comprising an 18-story office block, a 15-story block of service apartments, a 19-story residential building and a 3-story basement car park. Completed in 1997, the complex is also dubbed The Intelligent City. Because of upgrade limitations, the ten-year-old access control system used in the complex was no longer up to meeting today s increasing security requirements. UE Square outlined a number of criteria in selecting a new system. Factors which were of crucial importance included the reliability of the vendor and the sophistication of his advanced equipment and software. The upgrade and expansion capability of the system were also key factors in the decision. Kaba exos 9300 fulfilled all criteria no surprise, then, that UE Square opted for this solution. Also, UE Square has been a customer of Kaba Singapore for more than ten years with a mechanical system and thus felt that Kaba understood its interests and concerns. The Exos 9300 system builds on the complex s existing 263 HID readers and the 3,000 cards which were already in use. The ten elevators are equipped with functions such as access point management as well as visitor and tenant management and have comprehensive upgrade options. 13 CASE STUDIES Only the best for guests The Sheraton Centre is located in the heart of Toronto s world-class shopping, dining and theater district. As a 1,377-room property, it spares no expense to provide the best for its clientele including a top-notch security system. In the Sheraton Centre Toronto, a stringent security blueprint is applied to the entire facility. Saflok locks with infra red modules effectively control all access to the property. Technology and inno vation were the driving forces behind this installation: the Saflok MT lock is the best in its class and ensures sophisticated, mul ti-tiered access control with complete audit and interrogation capabilities. The locks for the hotel complex were also selected with energy management goals in mind. When a guest enters the room, the lock s transceiver en gages the thermostat s transceiver to ensure automatically that the temperature and ventilation are just right. The hotel has also installed the Messenger wireless access control system, which allows remote, bi-directional communication between each individual lock and a central server. This makes a range of additional system functions possible: rooms can be reassigned directly at reception, and there is automatic notification of locks with low batteries or doors which are ajar. If a room is not occupied, the thermostat can be lowered and then raised again centrally when a new guest is on the way to the room. If it is a repeat customer, the system has the ability to recall the guest s room preference settings and adjust the settings accordingly. The fashion label Diesel relies on a time recording system from Kaba. System à la mode: around 240 staff in eleven Diesel stores in Germany enter their flexi hours at Kaba terminals, using a contactless chip. The international designer clothing company Diesel makes a wide-ranging collection of jeans, other clothes and accessories. The Diesel brand bears the stamp of Renzo Rosso, the fashion visionary who founded the company in Today, Diesel is one of the world s leading trendsetters in new styles, materials and production methods. Diesel introduced a new time recording system for staff at its Düsseldorf location several years ago with a view to simplifying its operating processes. The system, produced by Kaba and its partner UCI Software, manages information such as entry and exit, flexi-time, part time, shifts, vacations, breaks, cost centers and staff pay categories. All entries are evaluated by the software and are available at all times for the purposes of information and further processing. As well as the Düsseldorf location, eleven more Diesel stores in Germany are now connected to the system via a dedicated VPN line: around 240 employees enter their flexi hours at Kaba terminals by means of a contactless chip. The entries are saved on a central server, and store managers can make corrections or additions at any time at the touch of a button. With the help of Kaba and its partner tisoware, the company has been working to optimize its production processes. Flottweg was founded in 1932 and began to develop and manufacture decanters in the mid-1950s. Over the years, the company has acquired considerable technical expertise in different separation applications and now leads the market in separation technology. Flottweg products are established worldwide: in mining and machining, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and in the food sector, Flottweg is a much respected brand. Another of the company s specialty areas of business is the treatment of waste water or oil sludge. 17 CASE STUDIES Secure flourishing in a gardening nation With more than 2,500 garden centers nationwide, Britain more than deserves its reputation as a gardening nation. Since 1991, the UK garden products market has doubled to an estimated 5 billion pounds. The business is flourishing and Kaba with it. The doors at the garden centers open automatically green thumbs are reserved for the plants. Klondyke is one of the UK s largest independent chains of garden centers and remains family-owned. At 18 sites throughout the country, customers can buy anything from seeds to garden furniture something for every eager gardener. The garden centers also provide a pleasant environment in which to cel ebrate seasonal events or have a relaxing meal. This mirrors a current trend: Klondyke is becoming more of a desti nation center where consumers can spend a family day out. Klondyke recently opened a new facility, Houghton Hall near Carlisle. Kaba installed a total of eight straight sliding automatic door systems across the 7,000 m 2 site, including four sets of biparting doors to the main entrance. Telescopic doors have been installed to the entrances of the restaurant, main plant areas and feature buildings. All automatic doors are suitable for disabled access. 18 CASE STUDIES Well-adapted security for distribution clients At its conveniently located site in Neuendorf, Switzerland, Transag Swiss AG operates a modern distribution center extending over 40,000 m 2. Using a Kaba Total Access solution, access can be granted online and in real time; all movements can easily be traced. A well-adapted infrastructure, close proximity to the freeway network and a direct rail link are the advantages of the new distribution center at the Härkingen freeway junction in Switzerland. Around 300 staff working for three tenant companies come in and out of the Transag Swiss AG distribution center every day. The warehousing areas of the tenants need to be clearly separated, as they each have differing security requirements. Whilst the pharmaceuticals wholesaler, for instance, has to adhere to special provisions applying to the storage of medicines, with the transport company it is the duty-free depot which has particular security needs. When it comes to security, Kaba is the best in the world, says Hansmartin Graf, who works for the center s operator. He relies on the Kaba exos 9300 online access system for the central issuing and management of access rights for all gates, doors and elevators at the distribution center. Hansmartin Graf also administers the access system for the different companies. 19 CASE STUDIES Secure landmark on the banks of the Danube Situated right on the banks of the Danube, the Hungarian parliament building with its neo-gothic archi tecture is a wonderful sight. Security at the busiest entrances to the city s famous landmark is provided by stylish sensor barriers and turnstiles. With its plethora of towers and gables, the 96-meter-high neo-gothic edifice is together with St Stephen s Basilica Budapest s tallest building. It was constructed between 1885 and 1904 and designed by the Hungarian architect Imre Steindl; his inspiration was Westminster Palace, the seat of the British parliament in London. Steindl s intention in designing this extraordinary building was to underline Hungary s claim to national sovereignty and to reflect the greatness of the nation. The colossal edifice has 10 courtyards, 27 entrances, 29 stairwells and 691 rooms among them more than 200 for official events and receptions. It also houses the offices and rooms of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the National Assembly. Whether heads of state, guests of the parliament or tourists all enter and leave the building through Kaba installations. These provide security at the eight exterior entrances and at the entrance to the deputies offices. 20 CASE STUDIES Brand new installation for Europe s biggest fire brigade training center Since July 2006, the fire brigade training center in Tulln, Austria, is equipped with an ultra-modern security system: Kaba s exos access system, combined with CardLink, allows easy, centralized management and a high level of administrative flexibility. Lower Austria s provincial fire brigade training center is the biggest and most modern center of its kind in Europe. Construction of a new 80,000 m 2 complex began in Spring The highest requirements had to be met and that also applied to the new security system: what was needed was flexible access authorization, maximum cost/benefit efficiency in procurement and low operating and maintenance costs. Furthermore, a single, unified system was required for the accommodation, the training section and the operations center. The solution selected Kaba s exos combined with CardLink records the data for around 14,000 course participants a year in a central system and manages their access to the accommodation and the training section.
